I've been going to anime expo for a couple years and even though it's a huge convention, I would say they're pretty good about consent and protecting minors. Last year they had safe spaces / stands specifically set up for minors who felt uncomfortable or were being harassed and cosplay is not consent signs
Thats good to hear, im glad conventions are growing to help accommodate their younger demographic.Â

PSA please don't touch people in cosplay. One time I went time square dressed as Anna and had 5 people all come up to me and hug me tightly without permission and one of them even kissed me and said I love you like a fucking creep. Now who were these people you might ask. They were all grown ass adult who are paid to be mascot and take pictures with people! What the fuck!? Them of all people should know not to do that shit. I hope I never see those creeps again!
PSA to weeaboos at convention. Please don't go up to cosplayers speaking broken japanese and then proceed to insult someone for how they look. I had one woman come up to me said my cosplay was nice ( wasn't in cosplay btw I was in a yukata) and then proceeds to tell me my teeth are fucked up what's wrong with them. I have a snaggle tooth.

Convention season is coming up and I'm finding it hard to find motivation to sew even though I want to . Also I'm between two cons, one in cheep but I will need a hotel and the people are nice. and the other is more expensive but no hotel and it's bigger. how do I choose?
It really depends on your personal preference for which con you go to. Think about your budget, and maybe look into the schedules to see if one has more interesting things to do.
Went to a small convention cosplayed as Sombra. Got yelled at for "stealing a race" because of my make up was a shade darker (brought the wrong one to con by accident) and that I am the wrong color for her. I'm Native American through and through. My skin is naturally this dark and darkens more if I'm in the sun. What was worse? It was my now ex friend who did this! Someone who knows that I am full Native American. Why is this a stigma now?
This didnât happen to me personally, but at Katsucon two weeks ago, a few con-goers decided to have an orgy on the now-infamous Floor 14. The reason that I say ânow-infamousâ is because someone went on Tumblr and made a joke about poking holes in condoms. The staff found out, detained him, and told those who participated in the orgy to go to the nearest health clinic to make sure nothing bad happened.
I have three horror stories from Anime Expo 2015. These three horror stories happened over the 2 days I was cosplaying Tewi Inaba from Touhou.
The first isnât so much of a horror story as much as it was just me being awkward when talking to strangers. I had been walking around the food court trying to find my friends when this guy cosplaying as Jotaro from JoJo came up to me and very enthusiastically asked for a picture (apparently I was cosplaying his favorite Touhou) when another guy came up to the Jotaro cosplay to ask for a couple pics. Naturally I stepped aside, but then the guy told me to be in the picture with him and to do Jojo poses. I knew nothing about JJBA so I tried my best to copy him. After the photographer left I was also going to leave when the Jotaro cosplayer asked to take a picture with me being princess carried by him (I was slightly amused but creeped out at the same time since I had just turned 16 and this guy looked 25), I declined and ran away with him saying âTewi waiiiit!!â as I did.
My second horror story takes place in Exhibit Hall where all the vendors are. I was just walking around when this greasy looking guy comes up to me and asks for a picture. I comply and as I was getting ready to move on he asks if I live in ____city. I silently freak out since I do live in that city I make up some excuse and quickly book it out of there. I had no idea who the guy was or why he knew I live in that city so I nearly had an anxiety attack from that encounter.
My third horror story takes place while I was on the phone trying to contact my friends. This guy approached me and asked for a picture of me. I was preparing to pose when he suggested we go to another place to take a picture where there were less people. I thought this made kind of sense since the place we were in a hallway that was packed, but this still raised a red flag in my head. I made some sort of excuse that I was afraid of leaving my bag unattended, but he was so pushy and I wanted to get this over with so I followed him. The location was a stairwell that wasnât that far, but of course there were less people. I felt kind of uncomfortable as he ordered me to pose in various ways. I was just expecting him to take one or two photos, so I kept my stuff near me, but he turned it into a mini photo shoot and didnât want my stuff to come out in the photos so he took my bag away and placed it near him. He tried making small talk with me but it just made me more uncomfortable. A couple times he even âfixedâ my dress and that just made me more uncomfortable since I did not want him to touch me. I said that I needed to meet up with my friends and he finished taking pictures but as I grabbed my stuff and prepared to leave he asked me for my phone number and email. I couldnât get out of this since he approached me when I was on my phone so I gave him a fake name and a number from a texting app I had. At this point I just wanted to get out of there but he didnât leave me alone until I went back to where I was sitting. That guy didnât give me a business card or anything and generally looked like a shady person and apparently has a really bad reputation in the Touhou community for taking upskirt pictures. I am still scared to take Tewi to AX again and I saw him at AX last year, but I heard that he got banned from going to Touhou gatherings and other conventions.
I have a friend who, for lack of better words, is pretty petite. Like, sheâs so small that we have to hold on to her or weâd lose her in the crowd at conventions. Weâll call her Chibi. Sheâs small, and sheâs also very adorable and loves to cosplay cute, hyper characters. Well, this happened a couple years ago, and she was cosplaying a character from a webcomic we liked at the time, and another friend of ours was cosplaying Lady Loki. I wasnât cosplaying because I wasnât feeling good that day and I didnât want to bother with a wig and costume, so I just went in a hot topic Miku T-shirt, jacket, and jeans, probably looked like a total weeb but oh well, I was comfortable. The con had a panel I wanted to go to and a panel Chibi wanted to go to at the same time so we split up for the hour and a half our panels were going on and Lady Loki hung out in the dealers room. I regret leaving Chibi, but she was 17 at the time and I thought she could handle herself, since sheâs told off creeps in the past. While Iâm in the panel, my phone goes off. I assumed it was my dad checking up on me since I was 5 hours from home, but since heâd called me earlier that day, I turned off my phone without checking because I didnât want my phone to disturb the panel any further. Once the panel was over, I went out into the hall and turned on my phone and I was greeted by these messages and about 5 missed calls.
LOKI (I have her put as that in my phone since she loves the character): You need to get here, now!
LOKI: Thereâs been an emergency! Where are you?
LOKI: ANSWER!
At this point I regretted turning off my phone and I called my friend and was relieved when she answered, and I canât blame her for being angry when she picked up.
LOKI: âFinally! Why werenât you answering?!â
ME: âI was in a panel and I thought my dad was calling! What happened?!â
LOKI: âChibi and I are in the hotel! Get here, now!â
I could hear Chibi crying in the background so I hung up my phone and ran to our hotel room, which was in a hotel about a block away. I get there and I see Chibi crying her eyes out and Lady Loki is trying to calm her down. I asked what happened, and Lady Loki told me something that made me see red.
Some creep had  grabbed Chibi and put his hand up her shirt! Lady Loki had been meeting up with Chibi and saw what happened. She, and I was so proud of her for this, threw a manga box set that she had just bought at the guy, grabbed Chibi, and ran back to the hotel as fast as they could. I asked if theyâd called con security or the cops, but Lady Loki said that she had been so concerned with getting Chibi away from him that she hadnât thought of it. It didnât help that both were panicking. I hugged Chibi and asked her if she wanted me to call her parents and she said no. She said that we had saved up so much money to come to this con and she didnât want it ruined because it was only Friday and we hadnât gotten to do a lot other than go to a couple panels. I told her that even if she didnât want her parents to know, we needed to tell con security and call the cops. She agreed and after she had calmed down some more, she changed into some regular clothes and went back to the con and told con security. They were angry too and asked Lady Loki and Chibi to describe him, which they did. While they did that, I went to try and find this bastard who had the nerve to grab my friend.
I know I shouldnât have done that, but I was bullied a lot and Chibi helped me get through it and was pretty much my first friend, so I was PISSED that someone thought they would try anything with her! It doesnât help that I have anger issues. While in the dealers room, I spotted the creep. How? Not only did he match the description (Basically he was a hambeast, and Chibi was tiny so that pissed me off further! Poor girl wouldnât have stood a chance if Lady Loki hadnât gotten there when she did!), he was carrying a manga box set, the same manga box set that Lady Loki said she had bought, Soul Eater, to be exact, and he had a bruise on his face that I assumed was from my friend chucking it at him. He made eye contact with me and I ran at him. He ran from the dealers room and I noticed he was heading in the same direction that Lady Loki, Chibi, and Con security were at so I began to yell âSTOP HIM! THATâS THE CREEP!â Con security saw what was happening and they tackled the bastard and called the cops. After that Lady Loki, Chibi, and I had to go to the police station to ID him and Chibi pointed him out. Lady Loki got her manga box set back, Chibi pressed charges for sexual harassment, and, since she was still 17, she had to call her parents but told them she wanted to stay since the creep was arrested and she had been looking forward to this con all year. They reluctantly agreed and Lady Loki and I called our families and told them what happened that and that it was resolved. It wasnât even 2 in the afternoon yet and we went back to the hotel and ordered pizza and soda and just stayed there for the rest of the day, pigging out on junk food, watching family guy on my laptop and basically trying to forget that the events of that day even happened.
Now each of us carries a travel size can of hairspray in our purses or backpacks, whatever we take with us and we donât split up at cons anymore. Oh, and we have a new appreciation for Soul Eater.

i have a bit of an odd and potentially upsetting question about con etiquette. im looking to cosplay a character that has a connection with nooses, and i think it would help people recognize me as the character if i had a noose as a prop. only issue is the fact that its a /noose/, and i'd be afraid to upset people with that by wearing it around "casually." if you or your followers happened to have any advice i'd love to hear it, thanks.
I would advise against it personally. I understand it would be for cosplay but it could be triggering to some people around you, also its not a very public thing that should be out and about. If you send me the character I could give better advice on what you could do to be recognizable.Â
Iâm sure a lot of the cosplay community heard of this:
Now Tell meâŚ..WOULD YOU GO DRESS UP IN COSPLAY TO A TOY STORE?
Because Hereâs the thing: Elite Con is NOT your typical Fandom Convention.
Itâs a TRADESHOW!
Itâs Basically the Dealers Hall of your typical convention only thatâs all there is to the event.
Donât pull the Wow theyâre more like Elitist Con, am I right? joke, Donât Claim theyâre alienating Cosplayers. They ARENâT.
Look at their Event Page. The Description itself says A Premium Collectibles Event for Advanced Collectors.
If you donât know what that means, it means Its an event for Serious Buyers to either get the latest figures/toys/Pop funko figures OR Get a chance at buying a really rare or really valuable Comic Book or Comic Memorabilia.
They know who their target audience is and theyâre giving the community a heads up saying We are not allowing cosplay You will be denied at door
Theyâre letting you know a head of time what will happen and that is helluva lot better than showing up in cosplay only to be denied access.
They are not alienating Cosplayers, they do not hate cosplayers, theyâre just doing their job to ensure that their target audience is getting what they want and that Comics and Memorabilia.
So seriously guys: Stop lighting your torches and stop sharpening your Pitchforks. Actually Look into what the event is actually about. The event is getting harassed left and right because people arenât doing their research. Get over it. Itâs not even something Cosplayers would even be interested in. Y'all just want something to complain about
I live with my grandparents. They are really cool and when i got into cosplay they helped me get my first costume. There was a convention about two hours away. I begged my grandparents to let me go. They agreed as long as my grandpa would come. I asked if my friend who iâll call Dash could go.Dash i knew since elementary school and was my best friend. My grandpa agreed.
Dash stayed the night and the next day we all went to the convention. I was cosplaying as Russia and Dash was cosplaying as Naruto. It was going great untill around lunch time. My grandpa want to go to a restaurant. But dash did not. We convinced her to go with us. Then after lunch things went downhill. She did not want to do a panel i wanted to. She would throw a hissy fit if things did not go her way. Then the worst moment came when i bought somthing she wanted. âI wanted it!â I explained where i got the wallscroll. She wanted that one not any other one. I said to her, âIâm going to meet my grandpa. Weâll be over near the entrance.â About 10 minutes later Dash came storming over and shoved me then kicked me. My grandpa pulled her off me. âI WANTED THAT WALLSCROLL ASSHOLE!â My grandpa made the choice that we were going home. When we dropped Dash off my grandpa told her parents. They were pissed and banned her from going back to the con along with  grounding her for 3 weeks.
That night i got a text that said, âUR A JERK!â âWhy cause i bought a wallscroll?â After awhile i just said, âYou know i think we should not be friends anymore. If you are gonna be a prick and attack me for some dumb reason then i canât be your friend.â She told me to go fuck myself and how horrible i am. Its been two years but i have a new best friend. Dash moved and i have not heard from her since.
(1/2) So i'm really nervous about an upcoming con. During the late summer, a friend of mine jokingly signed me up for an event's costume contest and I won several passes to the aforementioned con. However one of the other applicants was so angry that he lost to me that he began harassing me online, spreading rumors of how I lied and cheated my way to 1st place and even began demanding that I give up my prize winnings to him. I signed up for the Upcoming con's official costume contest...
...especially since Im gonna be wearing the same costume that won me free passes. He has a history of not only being an extremely sore loser but he is willing to go out of his way to somehow damage your costume like "accidentally" spilling something on it, stepping on it, snagging and ripping it, etc. I'm at such a loss. Should I still compete and try and overcome that fear of bumping into him or should I save my skin and costume and drop out?
Over come the fear, that guy is a loser and doesnt deserve your worry
I saw the mentions of brown facing/black facing and white washing and it reminded me of what happened last year - I was actually supposed to write this here last year but forgot lol
So anyway, I am white, but for some reason the gene lotto awarded me with unnaturally dark hair and eye color uncommon for the natives in my country, and I tan super well unlike the majority of my people. (and before someone makes the joke that my mom had a one night stand, my father has been proved with 2 DNA tests to be my actual biological dad, so do me a favor and shut up.) I tan so well Iâve actually been mistaken for a foreigner a couple of times, I donât know if itâs funny or sad that me, a native, have been told to âgo back to your own countryâ numerous times due to my very dark tan during summer.
So last year, I was cosplaying a POC character. It was a summer con so I had tanned quite a bit. I think it goes without saying that because of my darker than usual skin, I was using darker make up. The first day was a blast, I had a lot of people take pictures of me and compliment my costume.
I get back to my hotel for the night and check the con forums to see if anyoneâs posted any pics yet and boy oh boy had they. A thread discussing âbrown facingâ had blown up with hundreds of replies, intrigued, I check it out and find nothing but pictures of me in my cosplay from today and pictures taken from my instagram from last winter when I was about as white as a sheet. People were shitting on me for brown facing, saying I had very obviously painted my skin/used darker make up and that I was racist. After crying for like 2 hours and talking about the situation with my 2 friends rooming with me, we agree that Iâll post a short video of me removing my make up to show that I am actually this color naturally and my intention was not to black face or be racist. The thread blows up again and I get lots of private messages apologizing for their crude words. Some people send me notes that I should still wear the make up that I would use for my âwinter skinâ, because wearing the correct colors for my current tanned skin would be considered racist.
So the next day of the con, despite the absolute shit storm that went down yesterday, I go in the same costume but now with a different set of make up as I was advised to do. The make up made me much more paler looking, but very obviously artificially. I get quite a lot of glares and I already know Iâm going to have to check the forums later.
And when I get back from the con to my hotel room and I check the forums, Iâm proven right by the thread now discussing how I was very obviously white washing the character, with a few people trying to defend me by saying that after the backlash of yesterday itâs no wonder Iâd try to be whiter to âfit inâ, as awful as that sounds. I post a few screenshots of the private messages from yesterday telling me to use the lighter make up so I wouldnât be racist, and at this point most people have stopped giving a shit while about 10 people continue to argue that I shouldâve known better than to white wash, even if I was told to do so to avoid being racist. I canât fucking win with these people, whatever I do Iâm somehow racist to them.
I havenât cosplayed since, I do go to conventions but I always go in casual clothing. I might try again in the future, but Iâd like my story to be a reminder for people not to assume the worst about people who may LOOK like theyâre brown facing. Innocent until proven otherwise and so on.

So this isnât so such of a full on horror story but more of a annoying story that I found a little funny give what my cosplay was and the lore behind it but thatâs for later, also Iâm sorry if there are any grammatical/punctuation errors Iâm one of those people that tend to write how they talk. Anyway on to the story!
Myself - Me
Friend - Harley Quinn
Asshole - Trench Coat
So last month I went to a con with a group of friends and while it had itâs ups and downs(boy howdy were they BIG fucking downs) like most con do, one instant in particular though while annoying I found funny. During the second day I was cosplaying Mimikyu (Just in case for those that donât know itâs a pokemon that dresses up as Pikachu) and while wandering around the con I ran into one of my friends who was cosplaying Harley Quinn, she was sitting down with a group of people (I donât know if they were her friends or just some nice people she decided to hang with for the day) and I decided to come over and say the usual âHi! howâs your con going? etc etc etcâ. Now hereâs the thing about my Mimikyu cosplay itâs has a hood, a headband sewn into the hood to help keep the ears up and a bag mask (think Scarecrow but not burlap) and said mask has two very tiny eye holes, needless to say itâs a little difficult to get on and off so for quick things like getting some water or chit chatting I left part of the mask up instead of taking everything off. Now in Harleyâs group there is this one guy in a trench coat wearing headphone and just rocking out to his music (and I donât mean just bobbing his head a little I mean full on raving and he wasnât off to the side either he with right in our little circle) at one point while me and Harley are talking he stops raving to complement my cosplay, I thank him and go back to talking to Harley and he goes back to his music, well a few minutes after that and for no logical reason I can think of Trench Coat sneaks around behind me and yanks my hood (and everything else) off, no rhyme or reason wasnât trying to get my attention at all before that, just straight up comes up behind me and rips my hood off. Not a second goes by before I whip my head around to face him with the ugliest look I can muster and blatantly asked him what was that for? and explained that it was unbelievably rude to do that and now I have to fix everything which is very annoying. Trench Coat is clearly taken aback but my response and mutters out a pathetic little apology but still no reason as to why he did it, I let it slide tell him that itâs fine but he really shouldnât do that to people and start fixing my things while continuing talking to Harley. Now however he isnât sitting on the other side of the group like he was before now he is two people away from us and is constantly trying to butt into our conversation with this âBoo Hoo Poor meâ malarkey about how ~*~embarrassed~*~ he is and how he will be ~*~beating herself up over this years later~*~ and how he is ~*~so hard on himself~*~ and other pity party nonsense. At this point Iâm rolling my eye so much that Iâm pretty sure I could use them as a centrifuge to separate his crocodile tears from his BS all the while thinking âyouâre not upset that you did it or else you wouldnât have done it in the first place, youâre just upset that I called you out on it in front of everybodyâ but I just ignore him and toss out little uh huhs here and there until I get everything fixed back up, I tell Harley that I have friends to meet up with (this is true) and say my goodbyes and that Iâll see her later.
Now this is the part I find funny, again Mimkyu is a pokemon that dressed up as Pikachu but we never see what it actually look like  and on multiple accounts in canon it says that those who look under Mimikyuâs costume either are struck with a fatal illness or are just straight up scared to death, so strictly speaking from a canon stand point this asshole just fucked himself over real good for no goddamn reason.
TLDR: Asshole fucks up my cosplay for no reason and than tries to make me feel sorry for him after I tell him that what he did was rude as fuck.
