What's so funny? What was I so afraid of? You are... fucking nothing. Really? Yeah. Really. You're just an empty fucking suit. Take away these powers... and what are you, huh? A pathetic... weak, sniveling fucking loser.
THE BOYS | 2019 - 2026 S05E01 ("Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite")
It’s funny I remember feeling like Hughie forgave A-Train pretty easily after he stole the Compound V for Hughie’s dad, especially given how guarded emotionally A-Train is when he requests forgiveness (blasé almost), but then I remember not only did A-Train cry about Robin/his own personal experience with Vought’s corruption infront of Hughie at herogasm, he also quite literally stole the drug he used to be addicted to (to the point of dying directly in front of Hughie once) from Homelander. and all of that isn’t even getting into Hughie’s own personal journey which obviously plays a huge role. But like damn. He stole the drugs he used to be addicted to !!!!!! from the craziest murderer on the planet !!!!! all for Hughie. Damn.
in A-Train’s final scene with his brother, Nathan brings up their conversation from the park where he said that Reggie never actually saved anyone (after Reggie lies to his nephews to try and appeal to them in the only way he knows how: bringing up his powers and his fame through Vought)
Reggie here says “you were right” and Nathan says “not anymore. I’m still breathing ain’t I, Arana [reggies sister in law]”
and then he says “your nephews” and again those words are the words that trigger Reggie to move, to drop his head and clench his jaw
Knowing that this scene is the one that motivates Reggie to show up to the camp (and sacrifice his life) it’s noteworthy that it’s his relationship to his nephews, their safety, that triggers the most physical reaction.
Then in the video he left in case of his death, despite how much he loves his brother, how that relationship is his guiding light throughout the series, he only mentions his nephews - “I just want my nephews to know that when the going got tough, their uncle got tougher.”
(and this is consistent with Reggie and Nathan’s reunion in s3 mentioned here)
Scenes in which Nate implies Reggie’s life is worth more than his powers/being A-Train & scenes in which Reggie doesn’t believe him
“At least you’ll still be breathing”
“I’m not gonna sit here and watch you kill yourself”
“Or you don’t and you can just be my pain in the ass little brother Reg” followed up by “let me tell you man I’m happier coaching these kids than I ever was working at Vought.”

everyone watch Not Suitable for Work !!
Sarah Jones as TRACY STEVENS in For All Mankind season 2
so A-Train and his brother have been estranged since season 1, when Nathan cuts Reggie off for being on compound-v. (“I’m not gonna sit here and watch you kill yourself”) In season 3, despite being sober for a while now, A-Train hasn’t reached out or tried to fix things with Nathan. Nathan makes the first move by coming to Reggie’s doctor’s appointment. He asks Reggie to confirm his sobriety before he invites him over.
(in this scene and the scene at the house it’s so obvious how close they were. it is so easy it is for them to fall back into a flow.)
BUT this post is specifically because I love this moment:
When Nathan invites Reggie over, Reggie looks apprehensive
but when Nathan mentions “the boys” (Reggie’s nephews), Reggie moves. He blinks twice, sucks his lips and looks down.
“I know the boys would love to see you”
It’s the idea of his nephews seeing him that causes the most discomfort, not his brother or his sister-in-law (who know way more of his sins).
He knows he’s not someone the boys should admire, but isn’t ready to really face his relationship with fame/vought/himself (right now he can’t run - what does he have to offer his nephews without his powers?).
his brother is willing to give him a chance and bring him around the whole family, but Reggie hates himself too much to enjoy it.
he doesn’t smile, or even verbally respond, but how could he ever ignore his big brother’s outstretched hand?
moving is not for the faint of heart
I feel like Josh and Abby have Rachel and Chandler energy. If they ever became friends, they'd be such a cute duo.

Avantika Vandanapu and Nicholas Duvernay as Abby Chilukuri and Kel Washington NOT SUITABLE FOR WORK
I feel like Kel is going to realize he misses subbing and decide to be a teacher full time
Still have so many (negative) thoughts about what s5e1 did to a train, gonna make an actual post about why it's actually dumb lazy and uninspired and not just cos I lkke him when im back from the pool
Ok so the decision to kill off a-train, especially as if this is some great narrative moment pisses me off as a lazy and uninspired move for two semi related reasons
dying is easy, living's harder
Refusing a person the cartharsis of punishment (death)
Like A-Train is definitely one of the more interest characters in this show and I've kind of always been gripped by him because he's actually got some complexity and he acts in complex ways.
So this comes down to the two main things I believe about A-Train (reducing him to two points is sort of an oversimplification of his character so not entirely accurate but bear with)
A-Train is kinda selfish
A-Train is canny
So, this is best shown in season 2 where he gives Annie and Hughie the dirt on stormfront. Because let's be clear. A-Train does not do this because of a moral grandstanding issue that means all nazis must be purged from the earth. I mean I'm not saying it's not a benefit for him, and his own personal opinions do differ from his drive to act but in his own words, if he wants back in he needs her out because she's a racist fucking nazi, literally, and will do everything in her- quite considerable- power to lock him out.
So, A-Train gets "redemption" (which is a reductive take and a dumb term) because in season 4 he finally turns rat and helps out the boys, not just for his gain but because he feels Vought is wrong. This is after season 3 where he's increasingly mad at vought and homelander for letting bluehawk's racism (and wider vought racism) stand and its direct consequences on A-Train's brother and his community.
But like, okay so in many ways A-Train is a good man, who is doing good things, and maybe often the primary motivtion is looking after him and his own, but so fucking what? Like Hughie was so noble at first, we all start somewhere.
But A-Train will always have been the man he was in season 2, and season 1. He killed a woman and it was an accident- but he wasn't even sorry.
He will always be the man who killed his girlfriend becuase it was easier, he'll be the guy who's complacency and going along to get along started shit, he'll be the guy who drove his brother away.
And A-Train knows this ok? Season 1, he blames Hughie and Hughie doesn't take it, and the way A-Train's voice breaks on the "I know." (Jesse T Usher man)
so. he's got his brother back, and he's doing good and he's not having to play the role he's been forced into as a famous Black man, playing up being a player and unbothered and so chirpy. He's able to Make A Difference for people. To Do Good.
and he will still always be the man who killed his girlfriend and played Vought's games for years and killed people for Homelander. Who killed people by accident because he was hihg and Vought covered it up because A-Train was better than them.
Make him him fucking live with that. He's not Homelander, A-Train has guilt. Killing him off, nothing interesting abotu that. He dies saving Hughie and the Boys, he dies because he doesn't repeat his old mistakes and he gets to go out a saviour who never did anythign wrong now because you dont' speak ill of the dead and he died a hero. A living person can be so much more complex.
MAKE A-TRAIN HAVE TO RATIONALISE WHAT HE DID AND WHAT HE'S DOING.
and don't get me wrong, I'm not trying ot be all he can't move forward/he can't move on, he can, and he was. But moving forward doesn't mean the past has changed. It's like that quote about how grief doesn't shrink but you grow larger around it.
and this is where the selfishness and the canniness come in. Because A-train knows what he's like and who he is and why he's doing what he does. okay. okay?
make this man fucking live and he's a hero and he's done so much good and he's a good man and he has his brother back. He gets to Say He's Sorry and he's still always going to be the man who killed his girlfriend
not to slut shame but I cannot believe she put a nipple piercing shirt on for work… nipple ring sweater on at the meeting…

I love that A-Train’s final words to Homelander come true and he is vindicated from the beyond, but it would’ve been cool if the finale also included some actual punishment for the company that turned Reggie’s body into branded property and held a funeral and burial for him that violated his name, family, and every belief he held at the time of his death.
He is alive and well... Ok??
