“We’re here at the quarter finals of UA’s sports festival for the third match! On the right side is May Maple from Class 1-B, who’s quirk has proved interesting throughout the festival so far! And on the left,” Marian paused for the inevitable cheer, “is Drew Hayden, from Class 1-A! According to. G sources, these two have had a fierce rivalry since the entrance exams, placing first and second! I had expected them to be in the finals, but due to the bracket, here they are now! I’ll leave it to you, Lilian, so let’s get this match kicked off!!”
May was already exhausted from the first two rounds, and overusing her quirk in the second one against Briana hadn’t helped at all. And of course, she hadn’t expected to be fighting Drew so early on the competition. It didn’t bother her, though. She just had to beat him so she could move on and win the competition like she said she was going to. She squared up to Drew, who wore the same smirk he wore during the entrance exams.
“If I win, you should go on a date with me.”
“In your dreams,” May scoffed. “And what will happen if I win, you’ll leave me alone?”
“Are you two ready?” Lilian asked, her voice not projected like her sister up in the commentary box.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” May mumbled below her breath.
“May Maple! Quirk: Overheat!” Marian explained. “For those of you that haven’t seen her in action, May can heat her skin up to high temperatures! She can produce steam if her skin gets hot enough- it evaporates with her sweat! I bet she drinks a lot of water.”
“Okay, go!” Lilian called, and May dashed forward, towards Drew, arms in front of her, hands already heating up,
“And her opponent, Drew Hayden! Quirk: Petal Dance! The son of a famous ex-hero, he’s inherited his father’s total control over flora! He has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of plants, and if he knows it, he can create it! With two contrasting quirks, this will be an interesting fight!”
As May advanced on Drew, he remained cool. She was looking for a quick match since she had overused her quirk so much in the previous two fights, and he would give her that. He held his arm out in front of him to stop her from running into him. She comically head butted the palm of his hand, and he used his other arm to create a vine that lifted her up and gently set her outside of the boundary.
“Look at that!” Lilian cried. “In the blink of an eye, May is out of bounds! Drew is the winner!”
The crowd went wild. Drew was the favourite to win now, and May knew that he would easily win the sports festival- she was the last person from her class remaining, and he knew how to use his quirk against those of his classmates better than she could ever imagine. As she made her way back to the stands, something soft hit the back of her head and she turned round. A rose sat on the ground in front of her, with a paper note attached to it. She picked it up and ran back into the changing room to avoid the cameras that were inevitably in her face.
She sat down on the creaky chair, unrolling the small paper scroll. As she suspected, it was her invite to coffee with Drew, something he had been pestering her about since they had enrolled. She smiled at the paper, unknowing of the boy standing in the doorway.
“You better win this. I’m not having someone who literally lifted me off the field without having time to respond be beaten by anyone else.”
