Hohensalzburg castle, Austria 🇦🇹

Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe.

It was originally built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during a time of political conflict between the church and the Holy Roman Empire. Over the centuries, it was expanded and strengthened by successive archbishops, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, turning it into a powerful symbol of their authority.

Despite its military strength, the fortress was never conquered by enemy forces, although it was peacefully surrendered during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century.

Burg Eltz, Germany 🇩🇪

Burg Eltz is a famous medieval castle in Germany, built in the 12th century (around 1157). It has remained in the same family—the Eltz family—for over 850 years, which is very rare in Europe.

The castle is located in a forested valley and was never destroyed in wars, unlike many other castles. Because of this, it still preserves its original architecture, furniture, and treasures from the Middle Ages.

Cawdor Castle is a historic castle located in the Scottish Highlands, near Nairn. Its origins date back to the late 14th century, when a tower house was built around a legendary holly tree—parts of which are still preserved inside.

The castle became the seat of the Cawdor family (the Campbells) and has been expanded over the centuries, blending medieval and later architectural styles. It is also famously linked to Macbeth by William Shakespeare, although the connection is more fictional than historical.
