I battled against Smart Mark last Second Sundae and I think I held it down for myself
Every second Sunday of the month, dancers from all over Philly gather around in Silk City to have battles and vibe out. This is one of my favorite things about Philly, the rawness in every dancers I encounter. I had the pleasure of battling Smart Mark (Academy of Phresh) and had the time of my life.

Confession: Being an Asian woman of short stature.
Before I go on a rant, I would like to give you some background and some context as to why Iām ranting. To begin, I am a dancer here in Philadelphia. Now, like any dance community in every city, there are of different categories--i.e. the underground/battle scene, the choreo scene, the breakers, etc. And I have chosen not to stay in a certain scene in the dance community. I love my choreo-based dance company and theyāre my fam but I also like to battle. Now, if you donāt know me, I am an Asian woman of short stature. Iām Filipino standing 5 feet tall. Although that makes me hella cute, it can come with some certain disadvantages including people not taking seriously. As if being a woman is not already a challenge in being in a very male-dominated scene, being short isnāt any help. As a woman in the dance scene, you have to be twice as good and have to work twice as hard. People have preconceived notions about you and what you are capable of doing. So most often, at first impression, Iām not taken seriously. I constantly have to prove myself which, honestly, gets really tiring and really old real quick. Which brings me to the topic of why Iām ranting in the first place. So, here in Philly, every second Sunday of the month, there is a jam held in Silk city calledĀ āSecond Sundae.ā Itās where Philly dancers gather and just vibe and battle and whatnot. So the past Sundae, I had signed up to battle. Mind you, I am the only girl that battled that whole night. I had battled this guy and I won against him. It was a good battle, made it to top 8, battled a good friend of mine, he won, but itās all good. We had a lot of fun. Fast forward to today (July 26, 2015) when my best friend told me what the guy I battled had said about me. So, the Philly dance scene is very small and everybody knows everybody. So my best friend told me that the guy I battled, letās call him āSpadeā, had approached him and my other friend (and teammate) and vented to him how he got cheated by an āAsian bitchā--Asian bitch being me--when he shouldāve won the battle. He Ā said that he felt cheated because they only playedĀ āgirlyā songs.Ā
Long story short, he was salty as fuck because I schooled hisĀ misogynisticĀ ass on theĀ dance floor.

I just got back from taking Shaun Evaristoās class in EXPG in New York and it was nothing short of enlightening. He was the dancer I looked up to when I had just started dancing. I just admired his approach on dance. I had always dreamed of being in the same space and learn from him. Today, that dream became a reality. I did not just learn from him but he made me experience dance I have never experienced before. And what was even more amazing was that he saw me andĀ Shanel how we are as dancersāour strength and weaknessesāand was able to give us advice on becoming better for ourselves. For a person to be able to know you after one class is talentāthatās a gift. He is the epitome of a TEACHER and I will forever cherish that class. I love dance

My life is complete
I'm pretty sure all of us have seen this masterpiece. It was brilliant and beautiful to watch. The movements were captivating, every picture and every breath, they well all breath taking. However, once Vibe posted the Front View of this piece, I was completely in a weeping fit. I cried throughout the whole thing. To be able to put faces into the dance was the cherry on top. These dancers committed every bit of their being into this piece. I'll stop rambling and let you guys watch it.
