DASHBORED FANS! IT'S TIME!

For the 10th anniversary of DashBored and Fading Club as a whole, we're teaming up with Makeship to create the very first plush for the game ever!

Thank you! There's a lot of different things that inspired my art.

When it comes to 3D art, I used to deeply dislike prerendered graphics. I don't know why, but something about them was very unappealing to me. However, in 2022, I played Diablo for the first time, and something just clicked about it for me. The graphics just looked beautiful and mysterious, and it fit the game's wonderful ethereal soundtrack.

At that point I just fell in love with prerendered graphics, and really loved making them. You can see the Diablo influence in DreamWild's prerendered Castle area, and in Psychopomp's UI, with the two large colored health vials on the screen. I have not played any of the other Diablo games, but I really love that first one.

As for 2D art, there's a lot of different things that have influenced me. FLCL has been a massive influence on me, both in artstyle and narrative. The original FLCL anime OVA and its later Manga adaptation both have very distinct artstyles, but both have played a major role in the way I like to draw things.

As for influences, I would be remiss to ignore the influence of the ever lovely Mortis Ghost, whose art was a massive inspiration to me. Mortis Ghost's art is actually what convinced me to make games in the first place! It showed me that a single person could make a game all on their own!

I love the raw feeling of Mortis Ghost's art.

Homestuck was another huge influence on my style. I could almost make an entirely separate post on the way that Homestuck shaped my teenage years and completely changed the way I thought about narrative structure. I think it has a beautiful and dynamic artstyle.

Another massive influence on my style and design is the wonderful 1989 body horror film Tetsuo: The Iron Man. What an awesome movie, I really love it. It got me to think about the body, and how to introduce technology and trash to it.

Outside of recent influences, I deeply love the non-fiction works of Mark Twain. He has a very funny, sardonic, and witty style that I think holds up very well (outside of obvious things you may expect from a southern comedian from the 1800s). When you read Twain, it doesn't feel like you're reading an excessively old man who doesn't translate to the modern era, it often feels as if you are reading the writing of a miserable twitter shitposter trapped two centuries ago.

A Tramp Abroad is a good example of his non-fiction work, in which he chronicles his travels across Europe, lying endlessly about almost everything and making up tons of slander for just about every single person he meets along the road. It really stretches the meaning of "Non-fiction" as almost all of it is either stretched, or a complete lie. It is a long book at over 700 pages, so do be aware of that.

To be honest though, I'm not a huge fan of his classic outright fictional works. Something about their style just appeals to me less.
