i feel like a lot of fandoms pride themselves on being gayer than the source material but have they considered being less racist and less misogynistic than the source material as well . could be revolutionary

it makes me really sad sometimes that i used to love fandom and as i’ve grown older and gotten into more critical literary analysis it’s so easy to see when people aren’t viewing characters as tools used by the author to make points and instead as actual people and yes a good story should make you feel like your blorbo could be a real person but crucially they are not. they do not have thoughts and feelings outside what the narrative presents and they cannot fundamentally be something they are not in canon. yes i think fix-it and post canon works are fine of course but in have no interest in viewing characters as real people. i much prefer looking at them as the tools they did examining them through that lens and it’s so frustrating to discuss how a narrative is treating a character with people that cannot divorce their favorite characters from reality.
