“Complication speaking.”

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐑  𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓  𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐃  her to the brim was so palpable, she believed it could be seen by the naked eye. That the witches who used an unborn fetus to lure in the illusive hybrid to New Orleans, could see the fog of fear that rose from the soles of her feet to the bridge of her nose, nearly suffocating her when in his presence. The memories of that night would have flooded her sensitive senses, if not for the mistrust she had in the man. What should have begun and ended in a single night, had now followed them, carving their paths straight to the French Quarter. This wasn’t how she expected her time in the city to be. “A room for me?”  She repeats with a scoff in her breath. “It’s awfully forward of you to presume I would need you to get a room. I have one just above Rousseau’s that suits me just fine for now.” Resolute in her stance, this changed nothing for her. Her pursuit was finding her family, not building some new one with Elijah Mikaelson of all people. “And who’s to say I’m even keeping this? I have choices that don’t include being barefoot and pregnant in some pretty gilded cage, picked and prepped by you.”

     The sigh that came from the original hybrid’s lips was dry. He had known when he’d said it that she would find some issue with his words. Hayley Marshall was a strong woman. Perhaps too strong, it occurred to him. However, strong during a pregnancy was a good thing. Especially considering this pregnancy was thusfar one of a kind - the first of it’s kind. The child of a hybrid and a wolf? It was unheard of. Hybrid in general, however, were unheard of. That was why this pregnancy, this child was so intriguing to him.

She’s come to know these moments as recital days. Allison and her brother showing off for their Mom and Dad in one event of another, most times she just grinned and bared it. Sometimes, she even enjoyed it when they did something Allison excelled it but piano … was never going to be one of those. Thankfully, Elias worked out a system for this. He did most of the work, the gifted artist, while Allison hit one key every other beat or so and did her best not to rest her arm against the edge as they played. It seemed to go over well enough, Elijah even gave them a compliment, sort of. 

A sigh of relief left Allison as she gave Elias a look. Her brother only smirked and then disappeared to go make some tea, the kiss ass. She watched him leave, planning on just sticking around until he returned until Elijah called her over. Silently, the girl rose and then sat beside her Father on the opposite chair. “Nothing’s wrong” She answered, though the speed of her reply gave more away than she hoped. “I’m just … waiting for Mom to get back. She said she was going to teach me some new spells and there was just some stuff I wanted to talk to her about”

     Stuff. That was the word he had grown to learn meant women issues. Or, at the very least, things she was uncomfortable speaking to him about. Her body. Boys. Anything even vaguely relating to clothing or makeup. Honestly he was usually glad she neglected to make him her confidant on these issues, but today... Allison looked quiet and uncertain. As if whatever was wrong was something she wasn’t even sure was wrong.

She couldn’t say much about his first statement, so delighted she felt about him knowing her foolish habits. Dear god, that kind of thing was probably what kept her human, somehow. Maybe a little spark of what she would be as a average woman. 

Katherine liked to think that life hadn’t completely rotted her.

“So tell me, what your choice do tell about you?” She noticed the glances they got from some people around them. That was what Elijah’s aura would do, she thought to herself. Even if you didn’t knew who he was. And that was a particularity he had, differently from the other Mikaelsons. Klaus had a powerful aura, but it was an arrogant quality he would always use for his own benefit. Fear me. Obey. 

Elijah wouldn’t have to kill anyone to get respect, Katherine thought. And that was one of the charmest things about him. Deadly, but civilized. What a combination.

     Elijah ordered his coffee black. If that said anything about his personality it was that he was no-nonsense and didn’t waste time. If he was feeling particularly sweet one day, he might add one cube of sugar, but it was rare. He smirked over at her in response to her question as he led her into the coffee shop. “One regular...” Elijah glanced up to read the name of her concoction, echoing it aloud with a little frown. “Extra whipping cream for her as well.” He smirked over at Katerina. “And a regular black coffee.”
