The sound of Tendou clicking his pen echos in your head along with another thought, one that slips through your lips before you can register it,
"Do you believe in forever?"
"Eh?" comes your best friend’s response, drawling out in a fashion you’ve known for years. He’s curious. "Where did that come from?"
You roll your eyes, ignoring your cheeks as they grow warm at the question. "It's Valentine's Day—everyone's thinking about growing old together and fucking til the world ends."
"Is that what's going on in your head?" he asks with a dramatic scrunch of his nose.
"You're the one who came over unannounced, stupid; either answer the question or walk back home," you deliver a flick to his forehead, then relish in the yelp that escapes him.
"Just kidding! Okay, okay," the redhead pouts, raising his hands in surrender. "Wait a minute, 'm thinking."
And suddenly, the room is quiet—save for Tendou’s humming, of course.
The image of him deep in thought was engraved into your mind; he stares at his hands, seemingly absent, and hums an unfamiliar tune—which was different every time—with his mouth shut and his right foot shaking quickly. Even without turning your head to look at him, you know you’re right. He’s been that way for as long as you’ve known him.
Twelve years, you muse to yourself after you raise your hand to count. I’ve known this idiot for twelve years.
You contemplate the time it takes for the redhead to come up with an answer, waiting with patience running impossibly thin for a reason you refuse to admit. But before you can ask him what was taking so long, his voice reaches your ears.
Then a breath falls from your lips.
You aren’t sure if you were expecting a different answer, really. Anything was possible with Tendou Satori—he was spontaneous, bordering on unpredictable. You know that.
"Huh?" You turn to face him, your brows furrowing in confusion. "What? Just tell me."
"No, no!" He tuts with a wave of a finger. "Ask me."
That gets another eye roll out of you, but you know full well you two are never moving forward like this. "Okay," you give in to the redhead’s antics. "Why?"
Tendou sits up, leaning on your wrinkled pillows with the ghost of a smile on his face. "Nothing lasts forever," he starts. "Believing that something’s gonna last forever is stupid; it holds you back."
"Living," he shrugs. "If you glorify something only for it to be taken away in the end, it gets harder to move on. Nothing’s going to stay forever."
You whistle lowly. "Suddenly you’re a philosopher," you say, and you receive his smug beam with a snicker. "Okay, I got a follow-up then."
"What do you believe in?"
A noise leaves the boy as he takes in your words. He squints his eyes at your curious grin. "You and your deep questions."
"You’re the philosopher," you flash him a thumbs up. "You got this."
Then, he's humming again, another tune that you don’t know, only this time you watch him think. You wonder what he's going to say—what does Tendou Satori believe in? What does he live by? Your mind runs as you wait on him, and your eyes track his movement til he finds his answer.
"Really perfect moments," his eyes dart to your own, catching your stare with a toothy grin. "The ones that make you wish time didn't exist, or wish there was a forever. They feel like magic—like, you feel like you're floating! You get it, don't you?"
"... Yeah," you hold each other's gaze like that.
And god knows when you'll stop denying the tension in the air, or the way he looks at you, or the way your heart races when he calls your name.
But you'll admit that you wish you could capture this fleeting second in your hands.
Because somehow, Valentine's with your best friend felt undeniably perfect.
