“I’m sorry, I’m sorry it’s just-”

She looked down at the prone form on the floor which was currently covered in dirt and all sorts of other things from having tripped over a frozen root sticking out of the ground. Her cheeks puffed out as she tried to swallow her laugh but a few loud giggles still managed to escape her. 

“Oh come on. You can’t tell me that wasn’t at least a little bit funny. Have you never seen Youtube? Plus, I mean, you ate it. Like a good thirty seconds of just drunk ninja style tripping.” 

Rose didn’t mind being teased. She had had two older sisters. They’d made her believe that teasing was a gentle, loving gesture. She laughed as Winnie groaned; it was a soft, trilling noise that didn’t seem to belong to Rose anymore.

Winnie came closer. As she did, Rose warmed to her. The dark-haired girl reminded her of champagne.

“Rose.” She responded, weakly gripping the offered hand. An old, French impulse made her wish to kiss the other’s cheek. “I’m –… Well, nothing. I’m wandering in search of – edible plants. It’s late in the season, and I’m not very knowledgable, so… I haven’t had much luck.”

Winnie stood back when her hand was released, beaming as the other girl introduced herself. “Hey! Another flower child. And here I thought that stuff was too old fashioned. My middle name’s Daisy.”

She stood up straighter, grinning a bright, proud smile before she moved past the blond girl and further into the darkened wasteland. 

a small nod when she said she was ‘ all right ’ ; and alix took a step back before s l i p p i n g his hands into the front pocket of his hoodie. an ARCH in his right brow like he was p r e p a r i n g for a SHOW before watching her p u l l herself upright on the branch ; couldn’t help the SMIRK that appeared at her comment, either.  ❛ balloon head. ❜ he returned in a m u r m u r, expelling a q u i e t chuckle a beat after — until she DROPPED in front of him and he breathed out a GASP before letting out a NERVOUS laugh. ❛ geeze. ❜ dark browns searched hers… though seeing she’d crooked an arm for him, attention went down and he smiled w i d e l y before l o o p i n g his through hers. 

they started toward the woods — and after a few feet, eyes drifted back to her. s i d e profile ; but she was JUST as pretty. he sneaked a b a s h f u l smile at her before looking down, forward. ❛ so… y’wanna know where we’re goin’? what we’re doin’? or… do you just trust me? ❜ 

Winnie looked over Alix’s frozen position for a moment, biting a frown into her lip. 

Whoops.

“I think I might have overdone that. I was trying to do a superhero landing but I must’ve fudged the math.” She shrugged sheepishly before latching onto his arm a little tighter and turning on her heel to walk further down the sparse forest path that she’d started off on earlier that morning. “I mean, I was trying to go for Wonder Woman but I think it ended up looking more Peter Pan-ish. Not that that’s bad or anything. To be honest I always wanted to be a Lost Boy growing up but alas I am forever cursed with a name that only reminds people of a big yellow bear instead. Winnie the Pooh was my Halloween costume for like, five years. My dad thought it was ‘too adorable’ to let it die. I tried telling him but-- oh, hey Dad!”

She waved with her free hand to a figure who had suddenly stood in the distance, metal pots and pans jangling and crashing to the dirt floor as he did. “Wha-- oh, hey Pooh Bear.”

“I’m going out for a little, your turn to keep watch, no take backs, also this is Alix, he’s cool, okay bye Dad!”

“Right...bye Pooh Bear. Be back by sunset, yeah?”

“Yeah … I used to get told those.” Rose was still short, but nobody joked anymore. At least, she hadn’t meant anybody who could. “My favourite part was when they’d follow up the joke with, ‘I’m sorry, did that go over your head?’”

She smiled, albeit weakly. 

Winnie grinned and groaned in solidarity, her voice echoing along the lifeless, rubble filled hallway. “Ugh, that hurt even me. And I have a timeshare on bad jokes.” 

She stumbled over a barrel blocking her path and jumped to the ground with her arms raised in a fancy gymnastics finish as she finally managed to climb over it. 

Ta-daaa!

“I’m Winnie,” she lowered one of her hands to shake the other girl’s and without missing a beat kept on talking. “What’re you doing all the way out here? I usually never see anyone around my scouting grounds.”

     ❝   hey !   ❞   voice calls out from the depths of an alley , not even the moon casting it’s hazy glow over soft features.   ❝   you know there’s a walker on your tail , right ?   ❞

“Yep, yeah, quite aware thank you!”

The thing had been on her tail for an hour and though she usually had enough stamina to outrun hoards of the undead and they were often left behind at so much as a speed walk pace this one had been rather persistent. Winnie was speed walking at this point, her empty rifle bouncing against her leg. A hole in the pocket of her cargo pants had left her ammo dropping into the muddy ground and she hadn’t had the time to drop to pick them up. But she definitely wasn’t planning on putting her pants out to pasture just yet. She made a few circling jogs back and forth past the opening to the alleyway before having enough time to peer into it and the girl hidden in the shadows. 

“Say, you don’t happen to have any bullets on you, do you? For an armalite?”

alix’s heart nearly LEAPT out of his chest, j u m p i n g in place when she POPPED out of no where… though a grin and a p e r k of his brow DID appear as he took a s m a l l step back to find her hanging upside down just a f e w feet away. ❛ yeah? ❜ he returned EXCITEDLY, knowing then he d e f i n i t e l y went to the RIGHT person. listening as she spoke, dark browns d r i f t e d to the bottom of her shirt and he wanted to mention it s l i p p i n g — but alix blinked, simply kept his eyes away.

❛ obviously. ❜ he e c h o e d with a soft blink, a nod, giving winnie a j o k e y smile a beat after before emitting a LAUGH. ❛ coolest person here. why e l s e would i come here? ❜ with a cocky s m i l e, attention moved behind him b r i e f l y to see if her dad had heard ; thankfully, he didn’t — a furrow of his brows looking back to her as it a p p e a r e d kind of HARD to get down, however ; and he jerked his hand up as an o f f e r i n g if she so NEEDED it. ❛ do you… need any help? ❜ no, he wasn’t the STRONGEST, but at least he was t a l l ( for his age ).

“Coolest person! That’s all I wanted from life, if I’m being honest.”

Winnie fist pumped the air then quickly brought her hand over her stomach, finally registering the cold that blew over it as her shirt slipped down even farther. She struggled with the garment for a little, swaying precariously with her legs still hooked over her branch. Eventually she managed to stuff enough of the shirt back into her belt to keep it in place as she focused on Alix in front of her again.

“Uhm...” she blinked at the boy’s offered hand and then rolled her eyes back up towards her toes. “Nope, I think I’m alright! Just give me a second here...”

She trailed off as she started her way back upright, pushing off the tree trunk at her side with her hand for support. She shook her head when she was finally all straightened out, letting her chin fall forward into her palm as the blood rushed back around to where it was supposed to be. 

“I think that was a record,” she said before lifting her rifle from its perch and settling the strap over herself. She quickly flipped herself around and then deftly hopped down from the low hanging branch in front of him. “Shall we?”

Rose stepped back as they stepped forward, chin falling. She hadn’t seen them until she turned her head. While she managed not to jump and run like a frightened hare, her reaction spoke of discomfort. “Mon dieu–… I … I didn’t see you.”

“Funny, I get that a lot. People still think short jokes are funny but I’ll let you in on a little secret -- you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all.”
