Elfe is the first character not from og ffvii who talks to sephiroth (in terms of release date; BC released in 2004) and I don’t think their scene is supposed to be about anyone else but each other, it’s about how she has a reason to fight through Avalanche and repaying them for what they’ve done for her, and Sephiroth realizing he’s just a tool for Shinra, and thus wanting to find his own reason to fight, which he does through Jenova. He never had a concrete reason before that wasn’t just Shinra telling him that he would be a “Hero”, so now he wants to take the opportunity to find his own reason apart from what Shinra wants from him.

ADDING TO THIS NOW yes it’s been 2 weeks. Anyway, Sephiroth was never given the opportunity to question his reasons for fighting for Shinra because he was always shutdown, for example when Hojo yelled at him for calling Materia “magic” instead of conforming to Hojo’s belief of Materia being strictly the result of science. It’s supposed to show that Sephiroth wasn’t given the room to ask questions or to have his own thoughts, his only job was to do whatever it was Shinra told him, and the result of that obedience would be his “Hero” title and whatever special privileges Shinra gave to him. So when Elfe, someone outside of Shinra and completely opposed to them, asks him why he fights, he doesn’t have anything to respond with, because he’s never been given the capacity to ask himself that without facing punishment.

My personal life has become a lot more busy as of late but I’m going to get back to this fic very soon, I want to finish it sometime this year because it’s really important to me and because I have a sequel to follow.
