COLD LITTLE HEART

      “I can what-now?” Though he dismisses the question sooner than she can answer, deeming it unimportant, before shrugging and leaning back away from her, spine stretched to the full extent of his height once more. “Just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” Despite her attempt at an earlier insult — she does look like hell, and no hostility can deny that.

( she’s acutely aware of how terrible she looks. she sees it every morning in the mirror when she washes away the taste of bile from her mouth. she feels it constantly. she doesn’t want other people to remind her. would they still be concerned if they knew what heather duke was ?  she doesn’t want their help; she doesn’t deserve help. )

They look startled by being addressed so suddenly. 

They hadn’t meant to get so close, they’re just walking the dog - he does his best to nip at Heather’s shoes, but Sahara holds him back.

They raise both hands, one holding Neptune’s lead, in a gesture of peace and good will, a sign that they hadn’t meant to fuck up, it just sort of turned out that way.

          “ do me a favor and keep that mongrel away from me too, while you’re at it. “

( she doesn’t mean to take her anger out on the dog, but heather isn’t particularly fond of small animals. or big animals. animals in general, really. it only makes matters worse that she’s in a foul mood. )

     keeping her waiting for long is not a good idea. Not because she will get mad - only because having nothing to do will trigger her curiosity and unleash it on the nearby objects and people. Like the television, for instance. Chris has been staring at it for a while, trying to find a way to turn it on. She has always seen them already with images and events going on their screens, but this is the first time she has to turn it on herself. At a closer look, there are not any buttons to push on its surface. She even walked around it a couple of times, but her exploration has not been successful.

     Standing in front of the tv with narrowed eyebrows and her hands on her thighs, Chris turns only the woman addresses her. A nod. “I’m trying to turn it on, but I don’t know how.” The remote control on a nearby small table completely escaped her notice. Not a big loss. She would not know how to use it anyway.

    “ oh. yeah, sure, I can get that for you !  “

( she’s caught off guard by chris’ reaction. mo was half expecting that she was wrong, that chris was staring at the television set because it was old and out of place, and not because she had no idea what to do with it. there’s something undeniably odd about the other woman. there’s nothing particularly sinister about her that mo can pick out just by looking at her, but there’s definitely something strange. )

                 “ we get plenty of people coming through here that get confused by all the obsolete, low-tech junk we’ve got in here. “

      “— his grandpa was a tent preacher.” He can feel a wide, goofy smile stretching across his lips, and doesn’t seem bothered by it in the slightest. She gets it. She seems to really fucking get it. “That’s, uh — that’s for the massive fuckin’ reverb in all their songs. Wants it to sound like they’re playin’ in a church, I guess. I mean — yeah, that’s what the concerts are like. Heard complete atheists describe it as a religious experience before. He goes into this, like, trance state of whatever. No one can keep their eyes off him.” He’s boring her now but, he figures, that’s alright — Job doesn’t often get to come across people who just get it, and from the first Woven song they’ve ever heard, at that. ”Uh —” hurriedly, as though just now remembering to do so, he wipes his calloused hand down the front of his jeans before offering it to her for a shake, “— name’s Job. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

    “ oh !  “

( she suddenly feels rather embarrassed that she’s spent so much time bothering him about his music tastes and she never once thought to introduce herself. or even offer for him to sit !  but she gladly shakes job’s hand, gesturing for him to sit in the empty chair beside her. )

       “ i’m andy, and the pleasure is all mine, really– not many people are willing to submit to my endless barrage of questions. “
