Bandcamp has a great introduction to the sun-soaked Flamingosis. I only hopped on the fan train a couple years back, when he released the amazing Bright Momentsâif you havenât yet heard his music, youâre in for what I can only imagine Miami in the 80s felt like.
A collection of some rather irresistible type deals. Some of these end pretty quickly, so be warned not to sleep on them.
Mackay â Rene Bieder has been on a roll, delivering type families that are very aesthetically pleasing, robust in features, and modestly priced. His latest, Mackay, a gorgeous transitional serif, is no different. Sale ends July 1st.
Scotch â Continuing with another transitional/modern typeface, Neil Summerourâs Scotch is a 91-font suite that has all the options, including optically designed weights and dingbats! Sale ends June 16th.
Tara â Moving onto a less dramatic serif family, Tara is a smaller family but clearly designed workhorse suitable for the longest reads. Sale ends June 23rd.
Aribau Grotesk â Apparently I canât get enough grotesk options in my library. The moment I saw Aribau Grotesk, with its brutalist geometric approachâlook at that lowercase a!âI was in love. Sale ends July 12th.
Manofa â Not normally a fan of this sort of typeface, thereâs something very hip about some of the surprising shapes found in Manofa. This is the first calligraphic sans to steal my heart. Sale ends July 8th. (I actually nearly missed the sale on this one. Thanks, Fonts.com.)
Capital â And last, but certainly not least, is the Capital suite from Fenotype. Not only does this pack the usual OpenType features Iâm looking forâproper small caps, old style numerals, etc.âbut itâs a complementary serif and sans collection. Double win! Sale ends June 15th.
Working my way through Babylon Berlin on Netflix, and Iâm absolutely enamoured with the prevalent Art Deco aestheticâparticularly this opening title sequence.

Summer is fast approaching, and with that come the prerequisite sun-soaked playlists. Below are two recent albums with decidedly vintage vibes that fit the bill perfectly.
Gitkin â 5 Star Motel ⢠Assuming a fictional character inspired by a found lo-fi tape that was recorded by a rolling-stone guitar-slinging uncle, Gitkin has built a fantastic collection of guitar-laden instrumentals. I say collection because this album jumps all over the map in terms of influences, from west to east, but the consistent instrumentation keeps it on a cohesive plane.
La Luz â Floating Features ⢠Freshly released today, this is an instant classic in the surf rock genre. If I had a surfboard*, Iâd be popping the lid off the wax right now. (*Also required: knowledge of surfing.)
Royce da 5â˛9âł dropped the Book of Ryan last week, and for anyone who enjoys hip hop, this is an album that shouldnât be missed. Royce has been showing his lyrical abilities for years, but itâs only recentlyâwith Layers in 2016 prior to thisâmarking more personal storytelling in his songwriting; the tracks Cocaine and Power are amazing reflections on family issues. I strongly approve.
After about a year of silence as I gave my full-time efforts to Real Life, Iâve decided to revive Colour Receptor, my online âOh, thatâs neatâ bucket. Historically, this was all oriented towards graphic design and related disciplines: photography, illustration, typography . . . you get the idea. Wanting to keep it dedicated to that, I toyed with different places to gather my various other interests. But, as I grow closer to the milestone of thirty-three trips around our sun, that seems like the wasted efforts of a younger man.
So, from now on, this is going to be anything and everything that interests me. For the design feed purists, youâll likely want to back out now; for the rest of you, letâs all enjoy these things together so we donât need to acknowledge how shit most of our current affairs are. (At least itâs not 2017 though, amirite?)
So I thought I would detail my process on the prints for my solo show Distant Lands. I wanted all the prints to have a coherent feel but still allow me to be accurate to the source and have fun with each of them indivdually. The first way of doing this was to make them all the same size, so
