Welcome to the desert of balanced rocks that look like ancient mushrooms, formed 160 million years ago. The hike to the Hoodoos in the Grand Staircase-Escalente National Monument is short but the rock formations themselves are tall and fun to climb.

Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed slot canyons in the world, located close to the city of Page (Arizona). The canyon was formed from (continued) flash flooding and rain and there is an upper and a lower canyon which can only be accessed by taking a guided tour. The area is part of the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park and the land is owned by a family of Native Americans (cousins). Before European discovery, Antelope Canyon was the home to numerous pronghorn antelopes, hence its name, and cattle used to graze here in the winter.
The Canyon was easily one of the most impressive places I have seen today – the range of orange hues radiate all around you as you move through the narrow passageways. It’s incredible seeing what years and years of weather patterns can create and that all of this is hidden below the ground which on the surface just looks like a plain desert.

No Antelopes in this canyon Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed slot canyons in the world, located close to the city of Page (Arizona).
Water can do great things. In this case, the Colorado River has carved itself a beautiful path all the way from Page in the North-East (creating Marble Canyon), towards the Grand Canyon and further South from there over thousands of years. Marble Canyon is the western point of the Navajo Nation which is the largest Native American tribe in the USA. Near the town of Page, you will find a number of amazing viewpoints including the Horseshoe Bend (pictured above) and the Navajo Bridge which officially marks the beginning of the Grand Canyon.

The creation of canyons Water can do great things. In this case, the Colorado River has carved itself a beautiful path all the way from Page in the North-East (creating Marble Canyon), towards the Grand Canyon and further South from there over thousands of years.
Coyote Buttes is a magical place with rock layers upon rock layers of wind-blown sand in a variety of colours. This was where we spent the third day of our 2061km road trip.
If you’re not lucky enough to get a permit to the Coyote Buttes North (where you will find “The Wave”), head over to Coyote Buttes South instead where you’ll see similar rock/sand formations. How did all of this form? Different sand dunes blew across the southwest desert as the Jurassic wind patterns changed, cementing into the layered striations that you see in my photos below. Water draining away used to be the primary method for the carving of this landscape, but today wind is the erosional force here (besides the occasional flash floods).
A 4×4 with high clearance is extremely important if you want to get to this part of the park as you need to drive through some rugged rocky roads and curvy sand dunes, sometimes at 45 degree angles – a lot of fun if you enjoy driving like me! I included some shots with people (mostly myself) to show the scale of this gorgeous landscape.

Coyote Buttes waves of sand Coyote Buttes is a magical place with rock layers upon rock layers of wind-blown sand in a variety of colours.
We made it to the grand canyon with only 30 minutes before sunset, and the view was surreal! The canyon lit up in colours of red for a couple minutes and it felt like we were standing inside of a postcard!
4 hour drive to the canyon from Hoover dam:
The grand canyon started to be carved by the Colorado river millions of years ago, but interestingly enough, there are no dinosaur fossils in the park because the canyon itself didn’t form until after the dinosaurs were already gone. There are plenty of marine fossils though! The canyon is made up of more than 20 layers of rocks and over 5 million people come to visit this amazing site every year.

Why that damn dam? Because we almost missed seeing the Grand Canyon from spending too much time at Hoover Dam that day!
In reality, the Hoover Dam was amazing to see in real life – it was a massive project undertaken in the early 1930’s by more than 10,000 people and it was built 2 years ahead of schedule. I don’t think anything is ever built under schedule these days! Lake Mead is the reservoir at Hoover Dam and it is the largest one in the USA (by volume). The Dam itself is 726 feet high, 650 feet thick at the bottom / 45 feet thick at the top and 1,244 feet long… all of this concrete could have been used to build a 4000 mile long 2-lane highway stretching from San Francisco to New York!
That damn (Hoover) dam Why that damn dam? Because we almost missed seeing the Grand Canyon from spending too much time at Hoover Dam that day!
My first trip to Vegas was a short one and the city was exactly what I imagined it to be: a big playground for adults in the middle of the desert with plenty of shopping, gambling, fine dining, and endless nightlife. I did some of that. In the single day + night that we had in Vegas before continuing on with our journey, we walked the entire strip, visited some of the key hotels, had a late lunch/ early dinner at the Wynn Buffet, saw the “O” Cirque du Soleil show, and went to Hyde nightclub overlooking the Bellagio fountains at night. Vegas truly has something to do for everyone no matter how long you’re there for!
Day 1 of our 2061 km journey: Las Vegas
“The entertainment capital of the world” or “Sin City” is one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations. Here’s a little bit of my day 1:
Vegas: Playground for adults My first trip to Vegas was a short one and the city was exactly what I imagined it to be: a big playground for adults in the middle of the desert with plenty of shopping, gambling, fine dining, and endless nightlife.
The Sagrada Família is probably one of the most beautiful structures I have ever seen in my life. It is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona designed by Antoni Gaudi, and it’s construction began in 1882. It combines the Gothic style with Art Nouveau forms and the amount of detail, colour, and the play of light inside the structure make this a truly unique work of art. If all goes well, this masterpiece will finally be completed around 2030 – 150 years of construction.. not bad!!
Progress of construction:
Taking a look at the details up close, you begin to understand why this project has taken so long to complete. Sure, the Spanish Civil War in 1936 interrupted the progress, but the attention to detail and the meaning behind it all takes time to construct. The Nativity facade in my images below was the first facade to be completed and it depicts the birth of Jesus. The Passion Facade (one of the entrances to the Church) is made from plain and simple bare stone and carved with straight lines which resemble skeleton bones. The entrance doors here reproduce words from the Bible in various languages. The columns inside represent trees sprouting up and holding the structure up. The list of details and meanings goes on and on, but I recommend seeing this place for yourself and taking an audio tour once you’re inside. You won’t regret it.

Barcelona was the first European city that I visited and it was gorgeous! So much history and beauty everywhere you turn! The Eiffel tower was originally supposed to be a gift to Barcelona but the city rejected it thinking that it would be an eyesore. It ended up in Paris as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and Barcelona grew into a spectacular city without it.
Gaudi played a large role in some of the top tourist sites in the city, and it’s no wonder why. Not only does his unique style compliment the rest of the city architecture really well, but it also causes your jaw to drop when you see it in person.

*Some* highlights from Barcelona Barcelona was the first European city that I visited and it was gorgeous! So much history and beauty everywhere you turn!
When people ask me what my favourite travel destination has been, Banff is one of the first places that come to mind. It is Canada’s oldest National park, established in 1885, and has a mountainous terrain with dense forest and beautiful lakes which are aqua blue in the summer when they’re not frozen.
The amazing blue colour comes from the silt-like flour that is carried into the lake by melt-water from the surrounding glaciers. We see the blue and green wavelengths of light as these particles are refracted from the water. It is my absolute favourite colour in the world.
Over the 3 days that I was there, I got to hike the Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise, visit Lake Moraine and the Ten Peaks, and see Canada’s second tallest waterfall (Takakkaw Falls). There are many amazing sites worth visiting when you’re there.

Killarney is a beautiful park about 600 sq.km in size and it is only about 3.5hrs away from Toronto. The best way to experience this part of Canada is by booking a campsite which you need to canoe or kayak to and spending a weekend in the depths of the wilderness. The chances of seeing deer, moose, snapping turtles, and even bears is a lot greater here so if that’s what you’re after, then you just need to be a little patient (and careful)!
