I thought their potential to have something romantic together would make the tragedy and betrayal between them that much more intense in the second part of the story. Imagine you think your captain is a total stud and so chill to be around only for him to turn his back on you when you trusted him most to protect you, AND FOR HIM TO LEAN TOWARDS YOUR ABUSERRR I just think it's so sad. The regret would lay on post-crash Curly much heavier in regards to Anya if he really cared about her that way.
