Look, I enjoy their interactions and banter as much as the next person, but you can't claim that them being romantic is the intentional reading when this happened in the second episode

Like, this whole scene was rife with tension, including Optimus Primal tipping Dinobot's chin up with a sword and the fact that these two never needed to be nose to nose like this.

Astrotrain feels like an afterthought. Hell, he doesn't even get some last words. They were doing something interesting with him, implying that he had some kind of respect for humans and a past that fueled his rage. He wasn't in the decepticons side, he was with whatever let him take his revenge.

Do we get to learn more about that? No, we get a shitty fight that – for how much they hyped it up – turned out to be two pages where Astrotrain gets to hit Megatron ONE time. Like I get that he's meant to be powerful and all that, but c'mon. He is missing an arm and kind of blind, it should not be that easy for him to beat other mechs.

Also fuck why should I care about Starscream at this moment? We have two issues worth of his sob story, why are they insisting on that here?

Astrotrain was not his friend, he was also using him for his own plans. Why show him all sad about having to kill him? Oh yeah, he's not sad about having to kill Astrotrain, he's sad because Megatron is making him do it. Starscream would have no problem killing him in any other scenario. This scene is another "please feel bad for Starscream" moment. And it pisses me off because we could have gotten at least ONE flashback before Astrotrain's death. Him remembering his life in his last moment.

Because this is the thing. Unlike Ratchet, who we get to see more of after his death because of how much Optimus and the others cared about him, Astrotrain wasn't close to any of the others mechs. This is probably the last we are going to see of him.
