not getting jokes and sarcasm

when in my experience it's more like

thinking you have to fulfill 100% of the exact requirements for something, when everyone else apparently knows it's actually a bit flexible

answering rhetorical questions and everyone thinking you're stupid

SAYING something with a literal meaning and others interpreting it figuratively

following instructions to a T but not knowing how to modify them if something goes wrong

wait that song was talking about WHAT??

doing EXACTLY what someone asked of you and them getting mad that it wasn't what they meant or actually wanted

being terrified of people's empty threats or hyperbole without realizing they didn't actually mean it

memorizing all the connotations of different words so you can use them as precisely as possible, getting frustrated when others are inexact

still not getting jokes and sarcasm

Edit--some things I find the need to add to this post:

1. I should clarify: sometimes the not getting fake threats thing is not you it's them. This post is talking about people who are doing friendly teasing with no ill intent and just don't realize it's scary to you. I am NOT talking about people who intentionally threaten you to make you nervous and then tell you they're just joking to avoid responsibility (although some of the tags acknowledged people using the fact that they take things literally as a way to do this even more). Some of you made me concerned so I felt I should clear that up

2. If you are ADHD and unsure if it applies, it probably does. I'm not ADHD as far as I know but there's a lot of crossover between that and autism, so if you relate, it's probably a thing for your chaotic brain soup also

3. If you're not either as far as you know but you're just reblogging bc you relate that's literally fine, many autism/ADHD traits on their own can be relatable to others, and you can reblog content for your mutuals to find even if you don't relate

4. I'm not an expert. This isn't like, medical knowledge. The 30,000+ reblogs are pretty much my only proof this isn't just me lol. Someone sent me an ask being like "do you think this qualifies" and I was like "bro idk maybe?? i have no idea im just blogging about whatever the heck is going on within this slab of meat inside my skull" so if you want to know like, more researched stuff, I recommend @actually-autistic-answers

Good to know I was right

in elementary school they put everyone on the line and said the number of beeps you made it to in the pacer was a measure of your grade, worth, and health

in middle school they gave us each 10 m&ms and then we went on a walk, counting the steps until we’d walked far enough to burn them off

in high school my running coaches gave us a number that was the ideal weight for runners and worked harder for the girls that hit that number

in college i would come home to grandparents praising how much weight i’d lost and fondly calling me tiny

and then they all turn around and ask me why are you like this? why can’t you stop thinking about this? why are you so obsessed?
