i wish i grew up in the rez

i wish i grew up around other indigenous people & aunties & uncles & cousins & a community of people who look and talk and act like me. though i grew up in predominantly indigenous communities, i'm a first gen city implant & my upbringing was so rez-adjacent that i had almost no chance of fitting in with the indigenous kids who'd been there for generations, and no chance of relating to the other indigenous kids who came from the rez because i moved before i could properly form any meaningful memories of the place. the poverty & social isolation i grew up in was so impactful and ostracizing that i almost feel like it would have been better for me to be surrounded by other impoverished folk than deal with the social consequences of being so out of touch with my peers that my existence was treated as a stain. woe is me i suppose

y'all have got to let people who did dumb bad shit learn from it and move on with their lives
