Okay, so all the stuff I’ve been working on is coming together as a comic that I’m already a few pages deep into. More of it will be appearing here.
A colleague and I challenged each other to make a horror story based on what we each find frightening. My personal fear is being unable to communicate or being misunderstood. So while the imagery in the comic may superficially be about monsters and ghosts, the root of the “monstrosity” is much more about miscommunication issues. For example, the above image may be a curse for truth telling or hate speech or awkward flirtation or whatever the case may be (like Pinocchio’s nose growing with each lie).
That said, there may be some graphic content. The above is about as visually intense as I intend to (rarely) go - and it can serve as a benchmark for those of you watching. One guiding aesthetic are those lurid pre-Comics Code Authority / EC horror comics. (Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Mystery, etc.)
I’ll tag any entries about this project with #eselhorror so you can neatly avoid it if this isn’t your thing. Also, this is meant to wrap up by next spring at the latest, so if this isn’t for you please feel free to check back with my work then.
Initial character designs for the horror comic I’m working on. It takes place in a cemetery. Each represents a different kind of miscommunication, which to me is more terrifying than superficial monster characteristics. The protagonist is the zombie gravedigger in the first image.
Basically the plots stem from small problems that could be easily solved by just talking it out, however because that’s not usually possible it leads to larger dramatics.
Working on it, so you’ll see more about this in future developments.
