Derek looking up and doing a double take before completely checking out of the convo he is having with 2 other doctors to go chase her down.

"Meredith can I speak to you for a second?"

"actually I was-" *is dragged into stairwell*

Derek looking back over his shoulder to see if anyone saw him pull her into the stairwell. Meredith trying so hard to keep it professional and Derek making everything a joke.

"You are not that good looking"

"mm maybe not today but last night? Last night I was very good looking, had my red shirt on. My good-looking shirt."

Derek trying to set up another date, Meredith having a pause before she says no.

"Stop looking at me like that... Like youve seen me naked!"

Burkes response is to reassure Bailey that "he is my guy alright" and you start thinking that maybe Burke is trying to give Omalley a chance.

Bailey points out that "every year your guy suffers more than any intern" and youre like 'ok well maybe thats just b/c Burke pushes them really hard and helps them learn alot' (the puritan belief of being valued through the suffering of overworking amiright?)

Only for Burke to immediately hit her with "terrorize one and the rest fall in line" and its like whiplash when you realize he's saying it with a grin. This man made a seizing fish joke earlier all solemn faced but now he seems pleased, maybe excited, to fuck with George.

And I still think it is because of what George said during their first interaction "bet you missed alot when you first started huh?" in reference to sticking a patient with an IV.

Me: hold up let me look something up

It's also b/c women professionals are typically erased from med books. So if you werent a woman doctor you probably didnt look up too much about famous women doctors. Probably not the intended characterization, but definitely is a relevant one.

Anyways, both Izzy and Christina laugh at him then go on to explain who she is. Funnily enough when you listen to Izzy she says "she practically invented the abdominal (something something)" the last two words almost sound like 'wall transplant' which is actually not invented till way later by Meredith. Not sure what thats about but Christina talks over her so its unclear to make out fully can't lie.

Izzy sympathizes with Mer "talk bout parental pressure" why Yang laments about how she "would kill to have Ellis Grey as a mother"

We already knew Ellis was a great in the Game of Medicine. It's in Mer's opening lines. But here we get a glimpse at jsut how big she is. Ellis won two awards, we dont know how huge and important those rewards really are but she has 2 of them and is called a "living legend"

You start wondering bout what kinda childhood Mer grew up in.

Then she comes to the table and says "Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass. If i hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath I would Kevorkian her with my own bare hands." and the table is stunned silent. They're all wondering what we are, is that what Ellis is like?

Then Burke comes up to the table and begins talking about the first surgery. Christina and Mer are the ones shown leaning forward, both eager to be cutting. George has already resigned himself to being overlooked, resorting to his wounded dog tactics of being quiet and eyes down after pissin off Burke. Then Burke claps him on the shoulder and tells George he's helping with an appendectomy and you can see Christina lean forward a bit more as her eyes dart from Burke to George and back to Burke. Her look of annoyance, the pursed lips and turning away from George, as she goes back to her papers. The silence until George asks in disbelief, "did he say me?"

Omalley: "yknow I wish I could but.. Im a healer" *proceeds to stab the patient 3 times with IV until Burke takes over*

Like imagine being this patient.. Your doctor just told you he would kill you if he could but he's under oath not to in response to you making a joke about bacon flavored soy. And then he FUCKS UP YOUR IV SO MUCH the ATTENDING has to step in.

Then the guy who fucked up your IV (you're pretty sure on purpose now) makes a joke to the guy (Burke) about how he mustve been bad when he started out. Just for the guy doing your IV right (Burke)to look at him like hes (George) stupid.

So now you're thinking "oh this guy wanted to kill me for hating on soy products and fucked up my IV but is now trying to play it off like its just cause he's a first year."

The camera follows the surgeons hands for a moment. For a moment we are Christina looking through the glass. Katie Bryce is not on her mind, no she is seeing her goal up close. Then Dr. Bailey steps in and they have their exchange until Yang is dismissed.

Yang takes this opportunity to ask about the on call attending pickin an intern to assist in a surgery. Giving us a picture that she is eager, she wants to be in that room and not just for some flowery speech. When Bailey stares at her in annoyance, Yang tries to still get her answer by playing it off as gossip she heard, which doesn't work.

Omalley trying to crack a joke "bet you missed alot when you first started"

Burke choosing right then and there to have Omalley be the Intern to assist in a surgery on the first shift. The "Are you serious? Do you seriously want to ask me if I was incompetent enough to be able to do something as simple as placing an IV like you when I first started? That's the question you are asking me?" look that Burke gives him in response.

The fact that Burke doesn't say anything, just stares. A characterizing moment for him. He doesnt take the time to be cruel, he doesnt need to vocalize his distaste. No, he is a man of expressions, and by god has he nailed them (as good as he nails Yang)

Dr. Bailey even tells them outright "rule number one: dont bother sucking up, I already hate you. Thats not gonna change." (ooohooohoooo Miranda how wrong you were) She's set up as an antagonist of sorts, you can tell there will be conflicts with her for sure given the current cast we've been introduced to.

Dr. Baileys first words are "I have 5 rules, memorize them." Shes made it clear from the start she is their boss, she is here to work and you will not get in the way of that. Her second rule is "answer pages at a run" letting them know that their job is urgent no matter what the page is. That this job is serious and so is she.

Dr. Baileys third rule is "if I am sleeping do not wake me unless your patient is dying" b/c this woman works. You can tell she is not the type to just take a nap. She will fill out charts in between surgeries or do post op notes before taking a nap. So if she is sleeping then it is much needed. And if you interrupt that for something as simple as an IV then she is gonna be pissed. Not to mention y'all went to med school, you arent students anymore, do your job.

It segues into her fourth rule "the dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed somebody, you would have woken me up for no good reason." Again playing into the blunt, I dont care persona we see for a lil while.

Her final rule being delivered in response to Meredith. Counting in her head how many rules she said, the pager going off. As soon as she reads the pager, before she is speaking, Dr. Bailey is moving. She delivers her final rule "when I move, you move" answering her page at a run, showing she's serious bout her rules.

C: I got the nazi

M: I have the Nazi too

G: you got the Nazi? So did I

He then makes an unfunny joke about being tortured together. When this fails to make either laugh he begins introducing himself, still trying. Then he goes on to describe the clothes Mer wore to the mixer and instead of thinking "oh i sound like a creep" he thinks "oh I sound like I'm gay" and even iterates this to him with the line

"now you think im gay- im not gay" trying to make it clear he likes women before Christina interjects and removes herself from the convo. (another great thing for Christina b/c we see that she removes herself from places she doesnt want to be in and does not care about being rude.) He then reiterates that hes not gay, Mer was just "unforgettable" before being interrupted again by someone calling all their names. By himself he mutters to himself "and im totally forgettable"
