Miranda Bailey my beloved, when first introduced she is WORKING. Not walking into the room, not making a speech, not some flashy smile. No. Dr. Bailey is working, b/c that's who Dr. Bailey is, at the time anyway. She's not a show boater, she isnt here for pleasantries. She's got a job and she is going to do it. Her first interaction with the group being Izzy introducing herself, and Bailey looking down at her hand. Ignoring it and getting straight to the point. It's a comedic contradiction to what Izzy just said, showing us that no this isn't (all) jealousy but juts who Dr. bailey is as a person. It of course starts to paint a picture that she is no nonsense, but also very much does not care for you and sees you as a worker. (Not really a Nazi but this was aired in 2005 so yea)
Dr. Bailey even tells them outright "rule number one: dont bother sucking up, I already hate you. Thats not gonna change." (ooohooohoooo Miranda how wrong you were) She's set up as an antagonist of sorts, you can tell there will be conflicts with her for sure given the current cast we've been introduced to.
Dr. Baileys first words are "I have 5 rules, memorize them." Shes made it clear from the start she is their boss, she is here to work and you will not get in the way of that. Her second rule is "answer pages at a run" letting them know that their job is urgent no matter what the page is. That this job is serious and so is she.
Dr. Baileys third rule is "if I am sleeping do not wake me unless your patient is dying" b/c this woman works. You can tell she is not the type to just take a nap. She will fill out charts in between surgeries or do post op notes before taking a nap. So if she is sleeping then it is much needed. And if you interrupt that for something as simple as an IV then she is gonna be pissed. Not to mention y'all went to med school, you arent students anymore, do your job.
It segues into her fourth rule "the dying patient better not be dead when I get there. Not only will you have killed somebody, you would have woken me up for no good reason." Again playing into the blunt, I dont care persona we see for a lil while.
Her final rule being delivered in response to Meredith. Counting in her head how many rules she said, the pager going off. As soon as she reads the pager, before she is speaking, Dr. Bailey is moving. She delivers her final rule "when I move, you move" answering her page at a run, showing she's serious bout her rules.
Ugh the uncaring Boss used to generate conflict who turns into the "how did i end up with so many kids" mentor is one of my favorites and damnit Bailey kinda did it to me first
