“stay?” sarah’s eyebrow raised and she shook her head quickly. “i don’t think i can stay.” panic rose inside her being, but she wouldn’t be able to explain the fact that she couldn’t go anywhere because she had to take care of her mother. no one ever understood. “i appreciate the job offer, and– i can come over and work, but… i can’t stay.”

apprehension peppered her features. a part of her wanted to stay. a part of her wanted to live in relative normalcy with what she assumed would be kind of like a roommate– but she couldn’t.

Brooke listened, eyes flickering up from her phone screen to the other. An understanding nod is given before a smile returns to her features, soft and warm. With a hand, she waves and dismisses the air with a chuckle.

       “ Dude, it’s fine, you don’t have to stay. The job’s always open for you and you’re free to just hang around if you want, too. I get it. “   Brooke knows people could have other obligations, other focuses in life. Whatever Sarah’s priority, Brooke would understand. She knows she’d be the same if anything came up for her.

“He definitely does but at least some of that dirt is going to involve me.” Sara let’s out a sigh, this wasn’t good. If word got out she could lose everything she was trying to keep hold of. “I was just doing what I needed to do so I wouldn’t lose my cafe. He’s the one who’s married.”

The brunette fidgeted in her seat, she had known all along that what she had been doing could get her into a lot of trouble but it was that or lose her cafe, the banks weren’t willing to help her and she knew her parents never would have done anything for her either.

“If I give you his name does it keep me from getting into any trouble?”

       “ ----No no no no no, no.. Sara, I’m not talking gossip dirt. Yuck, no. I’m talking about state dirt. Misfiling, dirty money, bad archival keeping, unanswered lawsuits. Things that can get him financially and legally fucked for, like.. ever. “

Brooke didn’t like playing he-said-she-said games. That was grey hat crap. She liked crumbling foundations, cracks in the surface hidden behind filing cabinets and sleight of hand. Those things someone thinks they’ve buried away forever, like a deleted picture or disputed payment. She knows what’s at stake for Sara; she doesn’t need to say anything. Brooke knew better.

Her expression softens, something more understanding and gentle as she reaches out to pat the other on the shoulder. She knew better.
