Meredith, Bucky, Ty and Tora are an American family of four who decided to abandon their conventional life in favor of a simpler, more deliberate life in the South Pacific. It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the family these last few weeks with no veterinarian on the islands. The following are excerpts from the family’s honest account of what it's like to love, and lose, a pet in American Samoa. Original post found on @chasing_abandon: ⠀⠀ "Last month, our 8 month old island rescue pup Todd was hit by a car in front of our house. It was a Friday evening and we were thankfully home, to hear the aftermath and come to his aid." . . . "Todd made it past that first night. We got through the shock, splinted his broken leg, and medicated him thanks to amazing neighbors with dog supplies. Have I mentioned that our island is currently without a vet? The territory vet who was here when we arrived returned to the US mainland a few weeks before Todd’s accident. A replacement won’t be arriving until April." . . . "Ultimately, what we originally hoped was swelling in his back turned out to be permanent paralysis. We had to make the terrible decision of euthanizing a big puppy whose body was no longer functioning correctly." . . . "As for us, everyone is adjusting to the change. Our kids are resilient and no strangers to saying good-bye to a pet. Life marches on so quickly, and they’re swept up in the everyday life that always seems to fly by. They were spared from the decision making, and it’s the doubt of that decision that is the hardest to digest." . . . He was just looking for a safe place to rest. He hit the jackpot when Dr. Kristen spotted him wandering the neighborhood and dodging traffic. She patiently coaxed him with treats closer and closer to her house until he felt safe enough to curl up in the gravel underneath a bush. Like many street dogs, he was starving and suffering from mange and other injuries. But he was so sweet if shy. After receiving care and more food at the clinic, he got his name and a best friend and a forever home. The results are in and we are proud to share that Coconut Mutts in partnership with the ASG Department of Agriculture Veterinary Clinic have met our goal of sponsoring 300 spay/neuter surgeries over the course of three months! Spaying and neutering is one of the most productive and helpful things that can be done to prevent a cat and dog overpopulation problem in American Samoa and to promote animal health. From October-December, we coordinated with clinic staff to support the increased procedures and veterinary services. The first month of our Healthy Pets, Healthy Island campaign was October and 100 dogs were spayed/neutered. Most of the females had had multiple litters and the clinic was able to treat those females suffering from transmissible venereal tumors. During the second month, 101 cats were spay/neutered and vaccinated. December was dedicated to sponsoring 100 female animals – dogs or cats. We surpassed that goal to a grand total of 102 female dogs and cats. The Healthy Pets, Healthy Island has been a huge success.
