i have this dream my daughter-in-law kills me for the money she thinks i left them in the will (the way this lyric gagged me the first time i listened to midnights that i then just had anti-hero and midnight rain on repeat for an entire five-hour plane ride)

you see, there's also the "the magic fabric of our dreaming" in the black dog which also gets echoed in "how did it end" when she sings "the deflation of our dreaming". idk its just clear to me that the black dog is about the oven relationship because of its quiet reeling sadness, yk? while i think the whole thing about the microwave was the chaos and loudness, even after the end

see and here's the funny part, because i agree, but i also strongly relate the "fabric of our dreaming" to

Who's gonna stop us from waltzing back into rekindled flames If we know the steps anyway? We embroidered the memories of the time I was away Stitching, "We were just kids, babe"

and loml is like the ultimate donut song. the song itself is about her rekindling things with matty, and then reeling when he broke her heart - but the donut hole, what goes largely implied, is that she was grieving what she lost with joe, and she was seeking a great love because she no longer had it. like, he talks her under the table about babies and marriage because that's what she lost, and what she wanted so badly with joe.

so that influences my take on the black dog as well.

but also, what i'm trying to articulate (badly), is that... i think she so clearly was writing about both. how could she not? she was reeling from the dissolution of her relationship with joe, that's what made her leap into matty's arms to begin with. and when that ended, everything was up in flames. both those relationships, her dreams for the future, her belief in love itself. i mean, not to be parasocial to the max, but how could someone not write about both, even when they're writing "about" one, when they're all intertwined?

#i feel like so many of the details on ttpd are overwhelmingly matty (tattoos; smoke cloud; starting line; drugs; etc)#but the deep deep pain beneath the details is just so strong that it could almost be no one but joe #and that’s not to say matty wasn’t a deep pain as well but he only was because joe was #it’s a russian nesting doll of pain #hidden beneath the exquisitely hand painted details of matty #ttpd #taylor #all this to say i agree

ttpd honestly has some of taylor's best metaphorical work ever and i'm not seeing enough people point it out - she's always been good at running a metaphor throughout an entire song but she truly perfected her craft here. the alien abduction metaphor in down bad obviously, but also the romeo-and-juliet in a small town of but daddy i love, the wild west saloon of i can fix him (no really i can), obviously the high school in so high school is just an amazing use of extended metaphor but so is the high school small town of thank you aimee, the witchy mythical metaphors of the prophecy, the way she uses the house in cassandra, and of course the peter pan of peter... she has literally never been more on top of her english major game than she is this album
