How does Financial Aid work with my health insurance charge?
For all Financial Aid questions, please contact Bruce Hazam ([email protected]).
Will my COA insurance cover me:
If I travel abroad?
If I need emergency room care?
If I injure myself skydiving?
If I need an IUD?
While swimming in shark-infested waters?
If I experience an injury to my otherwise sound teeth?
For answers to all of these questions and so much more (including details about the COA domestic health insurance plan and coverage) please visit www.crossagency.com/coa and click the link on the left that says 'Online Student Brochure'. That very special link holds the answers to many of your questions about coverage.
What information will I need for the waiver website?
The waiver website will ask you the following:
-Insurance Policyholder Name -Insurance Company Name -Health Insurance Policy Number -An active email address that a confirmation email can be sent to
I went to the waiver website and it is not working for me. What might be wrong?
1. Are you registered full time for the fall term? The waiver website has only the names of all domestic COA students who are registered for 3 credits for the Fall term of 2011.
If you intend to be a full time student in the fall (full time = 3 credits), you will be required to have insurance. To plan ahead and opt out now, simply register for a placeholder credit to bring your registration up to full time. Once you have done that, email Heather Candon ([email protected]) to notify her of your registration change. She will then send an updated list to the insurance company and will let you know via email that when you are eligible to opt out via the waiver website.
2. Did you enter your birthday in to the waiver website as instructed, which is day/month? For example, the birthday of April 15 would be 15/04 in the database.

I am a senior. I won't be graduating this June but I will be graduating in several terms. Am I required to have insurance?
All full time degree-seeking students are required to have insurance. If you have less than three credits left to complete than you are not required to have health insurance.
If, however, you plan on being a registered student taking 3 credits (read: full time) for any portion of the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year (even if it is just for one term) and you intend to receive your degree from COA, you will need health insurance.
If you have tried to waive the health insurance but were unsuccessful, it may be because you are not currently registered full time. To bring your registration up to full time status, you may choose placeholder credits. Contact the registrar's office for more information about this process.
If you switch your registration from part-time to full time, please notify Heather Candon via email. She will then send your data to the health insurance company, thereby giving you the option to waive health insurance.
If you do not intend to be a full time student for the fall term 2011 but do plan on being a full time student for either the winter or spring terms, you can choose to waive the insurance by the respective waiver deadlines (December 1st, 2011 or March 1st, 2012.)
My parents received a letter about health insurance but it had incorrect information in the mailing address.
I apologize for the inconvenience.
Please email corrections to [email protected] and please don't bite.
Why is the health insurance deadline so close? (May 28th)
The Coordinator of Health, Wellness & Counseling does not control the deadlines. Her role is to facilitate the process of opting out of health insurance. She does not have ultimate control of the timeline.
Health Insurance at College of the Atlantic is coordinated between a number of different offices as it involves academic registration status, billing and student life. The Coordinator of Health, Wellness & Counseling has currently been designated the point-person/posterchild for student health insurance.
When Heather is done in her capacity as Coordinator of Health, Wellness & Counseling on June 3rd, 2011 and rides off into the sunset with a big smile on her face, all questions regarding COA student health insurance should be directed to Sarah Luke. ([email protected])
I will not be a registered full time student fall 2011, but I will be in the winter/spring. What do I do about health insurance?
The winter plan waiver deadline is December 1st, 2011.
The spring plan waiver deadline is March 1st, 2012.
You can choose to opt out of the COA Health insurance during those times by being in touch with Sarah Luke ([email protected]). If you do not opt out, you will be automatically enrolled in the COA Health Insurance plan.
I recommend following up via email with Sarah Luke and/or Judy Allen to discuss registration status and waiver questions during the winter and spring terms.
Where do I bring proof of my current insurance?
Nowhere. You will enter proof of your current health insurance information into the waiver website. You do not need to provide proof of it to Heather Candon.

Where can I find my student ID #?
You can find your student ID# either on a COA bill or on your student portal. To find it on your portal, select My Grades on the left and choose a grade type. The student information that pops up will include your student ID.
I have health insurance through my parents but I am not sure if it is better than the COA insurance. Can you help me?
I cannot advise on which policy a student should choose. Please do not ask me.

There is a link in the upper right corner to the online student health brochure which will review in detail what services are covered.
The COA Domestic Health Insurance is accepted by healthcare practitioners in Bar Harbor, including MDI Hospital and their affiliates.
It is your responsibility to verify that health insurance coverage through a parent is adequate. You will need coverage of at least $25,000. When reviewing your current insurance plan through a parent, be sure it provides access to care in the state of Maine and provides comprehensive coverage extending beyond emergency care to include physician and hospital services.
To inquire with MDI Hospital as to if they accept your insurance through a parent or guardian, call them at (207) 288-5081.
I know you said that international students cannot opt out, but I have really good coverage through my parents. So can you make an exception for me?
Absolutely no exceptions can be made.
I am an international student. Can I opt out?
No you cannot. COA has worked with Cross Insurance agency to devise a plan specifically geared to the needs of our international student population at COA. All international students are enrolled in the International Students & Scholars Blanket Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan. For more information about the plan, please visit www.crossagency.com/coaint
