This wasnât Konoeâs first time in this accursed city, so she should have expected something weird. The people here acted strange, behaving in ways the ninja simply wasnât used to, but at least she could anticipate such strangeness. No matter what, these were humans, and, in the end, every human thought the same way. So she knew what she had to anticipate at this point.
Should she throw the wallet down and make her escape while the girl fumbled for it? Should she hold on and do her best to outrun her target? Sheâd probably be able to do it, but the crowds were thick, they would hinder her and make that choice risky. Before she could make her decision, however, the young woman she had stolen from knelt down, and...
.....and what? Konoe didnât get it.
â.........................â
She wouldnât have spoken even if sheâd wanted to, but right now, she was truly at a loss for words. This girl had just had her wallet stolen (or, well, snagged), so shouldnât she be angry at the assailant? Her eyes lidded under heavy mascara, Konoeâs fact was expressionless. Painted lips parted ever so slightly in the tiniest grimace to show her discomfort and disappointment.
Should she respond? She certainly wasnât hurt, sheâd taken worse beatings, it was part of the job. Slowly, the ninja edged herself backwards, away from the girl. Her eyes bored into those of her opponent, checking for a single glimmer of deceit. She wasnât going to attack her, was she?
Looking into those eyes was a mistake.Â
What the hell...? How could eyes like that possibly exist in this kind of situation? She hadnât seen eyes like that since...
Itâs ok, sweetie. Nobodyâs going to laugh.
Out of her control, the corners of her eyes brimmed with moisture. No, you canât look at me like that, her mind screamed out. Her lips were silent. Her hands were trembling. All of a sudden, she was frightened, anxious, and so many other things...and above all, she was filled with a disgusting self-loathing which was ever present, and now screamed out at her like a foghorn calling out into the mist.
She simply sat there, frozen, looking at her counterpart. Then, slowly, she reached forward, extending the hand that held the wallet. Here. Take it. Take it back and leave me alone. Leave me here on this street to rot.
How lost could someone possibly be?
