Gaku: Today, we’re doing the Buddy Rabbit Chat Interview Project: Yamato Edition which is released in conjunction with the omnibus drama series “BUDDY NIGHT NARRATIVE” featuring 16 idols. The two co-stars will ask each other questions about character development and behind the scene stories, and our first installment is “BEAST COP!”.

Yamato: Woah, that’s one heck of an explanation there. Did you basically just copy-paste that from your manager’s message?

Gaku: You caught me lol. We’re the first ones up so I wanted to get it across clearly. 

Yamato: So that’s why you kept frantically scrolling on your phone next to me before we started. Oh and for the record, we’re sitting next to each other in the Rainbow City lounge right now. 

Gaku: Do you really need to say that?

Yamato: We don’t know how much will make the article so it’s just in case. Well then, let’s start with the introductions. I’m Nikaido Yamato, playing Yamato Izuna—the mysterious and delinquent detective. 

Gaku: I’m Yaotome Gaku, playing Saotome Mami. I play the serious, stubborn, and hot-blooded detective.  That reminds me, Nikaido recently bought me a tanuki netsuke related to my character’s name. (1)

Yamato: You’re gonna bring that up now? Haha, it’s not that important. I just happened upon it at yesterday’s filming location and thought, “That’s so like Saotome-chan.”

Gaku: Well, Izuna’s name is based on a fox and Mami’s is on a tanuki after all. I've already added it to my car keys.  Well then, l’ll start our interview now. Firstly, could you tell me your thoughts on playing the role?

Yamato: I thought that it was a pretty quirky role when I first read the script.

Gaku: His first appearance did have quite an impact. He shows up to the tense First Investigative Division in flashy clothes, and right when you're questioning what kind of guy he is, he hits you with a totally laid-back greeting

Yamato: I felt a lot of pressure acting out that scene. But its impact was important so I decided to go all out and let loose 🤚

Gaku: We worked with the director a lot on breaking it down in the beginning. Yamato isn’t just a guy that goofs around, he has some actual depth to him. (2)

Yamato: That’s right. His usual way of acting is his way of guarding himself from others getting too close to his inner self. He’s the type who can’t voice out his true feelings so he bottles up all his trauma and anger by himself instead. I figured since he got into the habit of bottling up like that then he’d probably be afraid of asking for help, and acted with that in mind. 

Gaku: It was fun at first, seeing the single-minded Saotome get thrown off-course by Yamato. The way he forcibly closes the distance between him and Yamato once he realizes what Izuna’s truly like is a key point too, or something close to that.

Yamato: Guys like him really need someone pure and passionate like Saotome to tear their walls down.

Gaku: It’s difficult to play him because of his shifting personality. He has the ability to make you think that there’s something more even when he’s acting playful, and even in serious scenes there’s this sense of cynicism still felt so it turns into this complex acting. I don’t think it could have this much depth if it wasn’t for Nikaido.

Yamato: Thanks.

Gaku: What? You’re so cold.

Yamato: You wouldn’t be able to say anything either if TRIGGER’s Yaotome Gaku started praising you with a straight face. Ah whatever, just ask the next question already please 🙏

Gaku: Alright, so the next is on any behind-the-scene stories. Give me your best. 

Yamato: Hmm, what can I say… I guess I’ve gotten slimmer because of the tough filming?

Gaku: Ah, I figured. You asked the stylist to take in the waist of your costume,didn’t you?

Yamato: You even noticed that? 

Gaku: I was with you all the time during filming so it’s natural to notice.

Yamato: But wait, on the other hand, haven’t you gotten bulkier? I’ve been thinking your physique looks better.

Gaku: Yeah, I started to slowly bulk up before filming started. I thought it’d look better on screen for the role if I looked more muscular. With some advice from Ryu, I added tofu, chicken meat, and broccoli to my diet for a while.

Yamato: But like, TRIGGER’S training looks super tough. And with Kujo there watching nearby, there’s practically no way you could slack off.

Gaku: He’s the most Spartan of us lol Yamato:

Gaku: Lastly, please give a message to the fans.

Yamato: Have you watched BEAST COP yet? It was a nice experience co-starring with Yaotome and breaking the barriers between our group. Since we played buddies, we worked closely on everything—from script reading to acting plans. There’s lots of scenes unique to detective stories.  Best of all, I’m not the culprit this time lol I hope you enjoy all the different expressions Onii-san had. Translator’s Notes: 1.) Mami’s name is the same kanji as a tanuki (狸) and a netsuke is a small hand carved sculptures traditionally used to fasten a container to an obi using cord! 2.) In case you've forgotten, their names are Saotome Mami and Yamato Izuna! So the Yamato here is referring to Izuna using his last name.

Tsumugi: Thank you so much for the hand cream gift, Yamato-san!! Everyone at the office was also happy!

Yamato: I’m glad to hear that. They gave me a lot of hand cream samples at the photoshoot. I can’t possibly use that many, so it’s actually a relief to give them to everyone.

Tsumugi: There’s so many kinds so everyone had a lot of fun picking theirs out! I’ve also started using mine as well!

Yamato: Which one did you pick, Manager?

Tsumugi:  I picked the citrus-scented one! The refreshing scent really lifts my mood!

Banri-san chose a woody scent from the same brand.

Yamato: Oh, Banri-san might’ve gotten the same one as me. It has a really nice scent.

Tsumugi: You did mention that in your Sugao special feature! It seems to be a popular scent among men, suddenly it all got sold out online!

Yamato: For real? Isn’t Sugao’s influence way too crazy?

Tsumugi: The magazine’s getting good reactions—the editorial team just contacted me earlier to say they’ve decided to do a reprint!

Yamato: I’m really grateful for that. I hope our regular readers enjoy it too.

Tsumugi: Was there any feedback from everyone?

Yamato: Now that you mention it—Re:vale just happened to be reading it in the dressing room earlier, they asked for my signature.

Tsumugi: I’m so grateful they took the time to buy it! 

Yamato: True but… While Momo-san is one thing, Yuki-san would say stuff like “You should take care of me more too, you know.”

Tsumugi: Re:vale-san is always looking out for us after all. I really am thankful…!

Yamato: Well, yeah—I’m grateful too. Oh, and Yaotome also bought a copy, but he kept praising it in front of everyone. It was super embarrassing. He’d say stuff like, "Being a leader who can unite seven people with such diverse personalities is really impressive," or, "It’s so amazing I could read the room and respond tactfully…"

Tsumugi: I also agree with Yaotome-san! After reading the magazine, my feelings for Yamato's charm was renewed all over again. Particularly…

1: …the episode with the other members was lovely. It was practically just everyday-life stories though. Like the time they made me ramen, or the time they woke me up after a night of drinking. It really made me realize again how much living together with them has helped me. 

2: …the interview about consideration was lovely. You know the little small talks you have when you make rounds introducing yourself to others? I actually just copied that from what Banri-san and Manager do during business talks. 

3: …the mature-toned cover was lovely Have you fallen in love with Onii-san again? Just kidding. You can lean on this mature Onii-san more too, Manager. 

Tsumugi: So all the members bought a copy on release day, huh!

Yamato: Ah, Nagi had gone out like, early in the morning just to buy a copy. I was just lounging around the sofa when Nagi brought over a copy of the magazine. He compared it to me saying, “Is the Yamato here and the Yamato in the magazine the same person?” lol 

Tsumugi: 

When Yamato-san is on the sofa, he looks just like a father relaxing on his day-off doesn’t he?

Yamato: I’m still too young to be a father yet though. And now that you mention that actually, I got a rare message from my old man.

Tsumugi: He checked it out..! Was he pleased?

Yamato: Well, sort of like that. He talked about when he was featured and went through it page-by-page complimenting everything.

Tsumugi: Chiba-san has been featured a few times, hasn’t he? I’ve read them.

Yamato: Yeah. It made me think again how glad I am to work with Sugao. Thanks, manager. 

Tsumugi: This wonderful opportunity is all thanks to IDOLiSH7!

Yamato: I’ll try my best to get a solo cover feature again too.

Tsumugi: 

4: Special Ramen

Yamato: Manager, Thanks for arranging the repairs. The changing room lock was changed just now.

Tsumugi: I’m glad the repairs went smoothly! If anything else comes up, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime!

Yamato: 

Ichi and Tama made ramen together lol

Tsumugi: Woah! It’s loaded with King Pudding fish cakes—it’s so cute! (1)

Yamato: They said it’s thanks for making them bentos and for the dressing room rescue the other day. Apparently they made my fish cakes extra thick. Plus some extra boiled eggs.

Tsumugi: Perfect timing, I just got a rabbit chat from Tamaki-san!

“Yama-san was all grinning while taking pictures lol”

Yamato: I wasn’t grinning or anything… I was wondering why Tama took a lot of pictures, so it was to send them off.

1: Did Iori-san say anything?  I added Kinako-shaped rice balls to his bento this time. He seemed to hesitate eating them. Maybe they were a bit too cute? 

2: Did Tamaki-san say anything? He’s constantly asking my thoughts on the ramen. If I say it’s good, he’ll keep offering me extra noodles relentlessly. This is definitely getting a refill though.

3: How was the taste? The taste expectedly had a very Ichi-like feeling. And Tama knows my taste well, they even only added the toppings Onii-san likes. It’s the best. It even had karaage lol.

Yamato: Earlier, Nagi saw the ramen the two made, and he seemed impressed. “It’s evolved from an alien that hijacked a rice bowl!” he said, apparently when Tamaki made it before it was pretty bad. (2)

Tsumugi: Ah… I heard a bit about it before. Supposedly, the noodles were shaped like brains… ><

Yamato: Ichi was in-charge of the noodles this time, so it seems like we’re safe. 

Tsumugi: 

Yamato: They’ve matured compared to the first time we started living together. Tama’s started to throw away the pudding lids after he eats them. And before Nagi would casually stack heavy things on top of the eggs and strawberries but now he’s gotten better at packing things inside the ecobag. Riku’s also gotten better at folding laundry since we started living together. Wait, I’m starting to sound like a mother here lol

Tsumugi: It really shows how much Yamato-san is watching over everyone! Everyone’s independent life skills have really grown!

Yamato: Yeah. I’m happy but on the other hand, I wonder if Tama and the others will be able to effortlessly handle the cooking and house chores one day …

Tsumugi: Certainly the others seem like handy-types, if they try they definitely can do it!

Yamato: You’re right. They could probably copy the “guy meals” you can find on video sites.

Tsumugi: You’re talking about the hearty and delicious ones, right!

Yamato: Yeah. If someday they’d whip up something like that and say “Wanna eat, Yama-san?” with a cold beer in hand, I might actually get emotional.

Tsumugi: It is a possible scene in the near future. 

Yamato: But if they do become that independent, I’ll be a little sad. 

Tsumugi: I kind of understand that feeling…

Yamato: The dressing room door slammed shut, and the lock got jammed. It wouldn’t open, and Tama was stuck inside—but don't worry, it was fixed after a bit of tinkering.

Tsumugi: Did any of you two get hurt…?

Yamato: We’re fine. The job itself was simple.

CHOICES

1: How is Tamaki-san doing? Yamato: He seemed a bit frazzled at first but he brought his phone with him to the bathroom so I could still contact him.

While he was waiting, he got a god-tier pull in gacha and was thrilled lol

2: How’s Sougo-san doing? Yamato: It seemed like Tama called Sou first but he was out/outside/away at the time. He knew I was coming home soon and told me about the details and situation so I got him rescued quickly.

3: Are there any more places that need repair? Yamato: I checked the shared areas and they’re more or less fine. Nagi mentioned wanting to expand his room. He said he wants a collection room because his figures have increased. That guy never changes, huh?

Tsumugi: I apologize terribly for not noticing the problem with the door. I’ll arrange for a repairman just to be sure.

Yamato: Thanks a lot. Your quick response is always a life-saver.

Tsumugi: It’s no big deal. I’m really sorry for bothering you when you’re off-work… ><

Yamato: It was fine during regular inspection, right? It can’t be helped. Besides, I don’t mind having to use tools like this.

Tsumugi: You’re pretty nifty Yamato-san. Did you do DIY stuff before?

Yamato: I did some similar stuff when I lived alone. I’m not as good as you but I used to do various part-time jobs.

Tsumugi: Like the karaoke and gas station, right..? (1)

Yamato: Yup, exactly. Apart from that, my apartment’s landlord was an old man so I used to help out with a lot of different stuff like weeding and minor repairs.

Tsumugi: So you even did weeding!

Yamato: They grow back pretty fast if you don’t pull them out immediately, and I was the only young guy around who could help. It looked pretty tiring watching him weed it all on his own, and I couldn’t just leave him alone, y’know? Summer was hell though.

Tsumugi: I’ve weeded the dorms before, it’s really hard on your back isn’t it? >< And in the summer your neck gets really sunburned…

Yamato: Legit. If you let your guard down, your back turns all stiff and your neck stings… The old man would lend me a straw hat and a towel for my neck lol

Tsumugi: Next time I’ll also try that style lol!

Yamato: There’s a trick to wrapping the towel, Onii-san will teach you.

Tsumugi:

Yamato: Looking back now, a lot of things have happened.

Tsumugi: Do you miss living alone?

Yamato: Well, living alone was pretty carefree. But I’ve grown used to living with everyone, on the other hand it might feel stranger without them.

Tsumugi:

2: Making Bento Boxes

Yamato: Manager, today got pretty late. Thanks for the hard work. Have you gotten home yet?

Tsumugi: Thank you very much for working so late too, Yamato-san! I actually just got home. You’ve been busy everyday recently, are you feeling alright?

Yamato: I’m fine. It’s my day off tomorrow so I’ll take it easy. Mitsu seems to have work tomorrow morning, so I might make the highschoolers’ bentos though it’s been awhile. 

Tsumugi: If you need a bento I’ll do it, so don’t push yourself and get a good night’s sleep. 

Yamato: It’ll be fine. Manager still has work tomorrow, please rest up. If I boil the edamame with my evening drink and prep work for the bento while I'm at it, I won’t have to do much in the morning.

Maybe I'll add the stuff Ichi and Tama like…

1: What kind of bento will you make for Iori-san? Yamato: I’ve done them before but I think I'll make some bear onigiri. He told me it was childish, but Tama says he took pictures in secret.

2: What kind of bento will you make for Tamaki-san? Yamato: It gets him all hyped up when a hamburger is in it or so he says, so maybe that. It's worth it for Onii-san too because he'll eat anything and say it's delicious

3: Will you be making them a character bento? Yamato: I could do that, as long as there’s enough ingredients. I’ll check the fridge before I decide. Seems like Mitsu got groceries today so there’ll be lots of stuff.

Yamato: Is Manager eating properly?

Tsumugi: I try to cook for myself as much as I can when I have the time!

Yamato: Then that's good. Recently you've been getting by with bread a lot. You always seem so busy, Onii-san's worried about you.

Tsumugi: It's not that I'm busy, it's just that I have a favorite bread! It's from a series collaboration between a popular sweets shop and convenience store. It’s delicious, so before I knew it—I kept buying them!

Yamato: Ah, I see its commercials all the time. I think I’ve seen their chocolate-filled bread. Tama and Riku were eating it the other day, they said it was delicious.

Tsumugi: Ah, that! That day, I shared it with them when I saw them in the office. 

Yamato: Oh, so it was Manager that gave it to us. The next day, we took Nagi along to buy some more in the konbini too. Yesterday, I also spotted chahan and gyoza by my favorite Chinese and couldn’t help buying them.

Tsumugi: That does happen a lot! You can always see collaborations with famous restaurants. How was the taste?

Yamato: The shop really got the taste right, Onii-san is super satisfied.

Tama also bought ramen at a different shop doing the collab. We figured we could add some extras that weren’t possible in the restaurant. We added leftover fried chicken, loaded it up with extra garlic, and turned it more like an izakaya-style menu dish.

Tsumugi: Ramen with fried chicken…! It’s certainly not something you can get at a restaurant! It seems delicious soaked in the ramen’s broth!

Yamato: Tama really liked it lol. It’d be nice if the restaurant actually had these toppings. Heck, even just talking about it makes me wanna eat ramen. I'm off tomorrow, so I might just get some late-night ramen with extra garlic.

Tsumugi:  Ooo… Now I'm craving it too...

Yamato: That's great. Let's have a sinful meal together.

Tsumugi: Yamato-san, thank you for your hard work. A new job has been booked...! Somehow, IDOLiSH7 will be featured on the cover of Sugao’s special idol feature!

Yamato: Good work. About that, I heard a little bit from Nagi. Re:Vale-san, TRIGGER, and ZOOL will be participating too right? Going all in with 16 issues, with one person per cover or something. [1]

Tsumugi: That’s right! It will be a pretty big project!

Yamato: A solo cover for that Sugao is kinda intimidating. Onii-san is having a hard time imagining myself on the cover (lol)

Tsumugi: It is a bit rare for Sugao to feature an idol, isn’t it! I was also surprised when I heard! Yamato-san, you’ve probably read it from time to time!

Yamato: Yep. Sometimes in like dressing rooms they have them. They feature different subjects, just by reading them you get a sense of the current trends and events.

Tsumugi: By getting info from places like these, you pick up all kinds of knowledge!

Yamato: Nah, it's not really that serious. I just read it to kill time.

Tsumugi: But the other day when you starred in a variety show, the response was amazing! You gave a precise comment on money lending policies, your co-star even praised you for your words! When did you start studying? 

Yamato: When I did a drama role as a lawyer I studied some of its subjects, sometimes I just saw the subject. It’s pretty sketchy knowledge though, the host saved me by giving a good follow up. [2] When I think about Mitsu also doing that kind of job, it’s amazing

Tsumugi: That’s true…! Mitsuki-san’s follow-ups have always helped me too. Also, people say you look cool when you raise your glasses whenever you give a serious comment. And in your teen magazine feature, that trendy pose was so full of charisma, it even charted on social media! [3]

Yamato: That cheek heart pose… You know it? Well I only heard about it when Tama told me, I felt so stranded and lost. [4]

Tsumugi:

Yamato:

And so? Won’t you let me hear the details for Sugao?

Tsumugi: That’s right…! Every issue has a theme, Yamato-san’s is “Caring hands, reliable hands” with that kind of theme. Aligning with the theme’s skill and attentiveness, the feature will also show hand care!

Yamato: I don’t really do hand care and stuff usually though, that okay? 

Tsumugi: But Yamato-san’s hands are very pretty!

Yamato: Really? Then it’s probably thanks to Kujo. In our previous Christmas present exchange, Kujo got me a face care set. Since then, I’ve been giving it a bit more thought. Not to the feature’s level though

Tsumugi: Hand care is just one of the themes, so it’s totally fine! This time’s subject “Caring hands, reliable hands” combined with Yamato-san’s skill and attentiveness will be the applied focus of the direction. The points are perfectly Yamato-san!

Yamato: “Perfectly” huh? (lol)

Tsumugi: Of course! The other day when the staff had a hard time placing all the luggage, I heard you opened the door for them and helped carry things!

Yamato: That’s well, if someone was having trouble right in front of you, anyone would help them

Tsumugi: The fact that you noticed they were in trouble, is proof of how considerate Yamato-san is!

Yamato: Is that so? And besides, realizing that makes Manager also amazing when you think about it.

Tsumugi: Eh… I guess that’s true.

Yamato: It is. And when it comes to work, I’m always relying on Manager. But always relying on Manager gets lonely, so  don’t be shy and lean on Nii-san sometimes too
