When I speak Chinese, it's like I'm riding a bike that I took apart as a young lad and only recently rebuilt as part of a millennial bike building hobby. I seem to be getting along very well until suddenly parts start coming off the machine and everything falls apart and I resort to walking to my destination in English while collecting my rapidly diminishing pieces of dignity to rebuild at home

Treasure Planet's John Silver, using an arm attachment he probably wasn't allowed to use in the movie but definitely had because, like, y'know
for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"
agshjfsj you know what? sure. I can do this from an in-universe perspective too
for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to when it was on air.
firstly, you'd better hope it stays up on amazon prime, because it aired 24/7 for multiple decades, so the size of it is astronomical. there's a reason the other streaming services dropped it - the server costs alone are ridiculous. but even on prime there are ad breaks in it that it never used to have, because back then all the advertising was product placement, but modern advertisers want mid-roll ads, and they really break up some of the most emotional moments imo.
(and don't get me started on the music licensing btw - all of the changes are bad, but the song swap in episode 9775 killed me dead. awful)
not to mention that the vhs, laserdisc, dvd, and blu-ray releases have been out of print for years. and if you want to try torrenting it, to get it in even barely decent quality you're gonna need at least 300TB of free space, and that's not including the deleted scenes and director's commentary tracks, which are a whole other thing.
secondly, everyone has this parasocial thing where they feel like they grew up with Truman, because their mom kept it on in the house when they were a kid or w/e, and we need to just. get over it. I mean, he's just a guy. you're not special for liking him; everyone likes him.
like, some of you guys are worse about this than you were with Steve from Blue's Clues, and that's saying something. you've gotta move on.
and people need to be nicer to the actors who played his friends and family, too. like I know the ones who were adults at the start have a lot to answer for, but the kids were pushed into this by the industry just like he was! and they don't deserve to be cancelled on twitter just because their dad got them into acting as a 3yo or w/e. like. come on.
thirdly, because of the way the show ended, we need to actually address the fact that we don't know what happened to him? like, Truman wasn't some actor who quit, he was lied to about his whole life, and now nobody knows where he is! and after the SAG-AFTRA strike when the crew and extras were fighting to get paid for the work they did on that show, did fucking anybody think about Truman? if anyone's owed residuals, it's that guy.
I just feel like nobody's taking it seriously that he's not a celebrity? he's a kid who got shoved into a machine, and after what happened to him, it'd be completely fine if he never showed his face in public again.
(though personally, I want him to just so he can sue the shit out of everyone involved in his upbringing. but that's just me.)
anyway on a fandom level, if you want to help, the Truman Archival Project is looking for some eps that were lost due to corruption, and some scenes that got cut later. there's a list on the wiki, but there are a lot of gaps and old tape formats that need converting, so if you can help, go do that!
and Truman, if you're out there - I hope you're living a good life. whatever comfort and entertainment you bring to people really means nothing compared to the value of you getting to live a normal life. I hope you're having a good time, wherever you are.
when it comes down to it, what was done to you was awful. nobody deserves to have their most private moments shown to millions of people without their consent.
it's probably bad that we've normalized this experience.
Postscript to the previous installment. This was originally going to be all published as one part on Webtoon, but that platform's extreme focus on mobile means that forgetting your password creates a customer service nightmare that would have an ATnT executive taking notes. I've given up on it.
As of this publication, you can find SABRINA AND THE GRAVEKEEPER on Tumblr, just Tumblr, and nothing but the Tumblr.
Thanks for reading, as always.

As the tech economy starts to constrict around the debt- and anti-union business models (i.e., any app startup), I am very very glad for Tumblr remaining stable. Click Daddy appreciates your Clicks.
The format of this story will be changing very soon to accommodate Tumblr as the primary platform. Look forward to it -- I certainly am. I am hoping it will help me speed along the production process by making it more fun for me.
Thanks for reading, as always.

ive never liked the phrase "manmade horrors beyond your comprehension" but i cant think of a better way to describe texas roads
biblically accurate highway
not only are these pics real, the second one in particular was taken within 10 minutes of my childhood home and is an area ive driven through >1000 times
They absolutely look like that; my fave is the I-10 410 interchange
which has the nice combo of looking like THAT but also you have the ridiculous boom in housing from the baby boom *right there* You can even see the elementary school i went to (on the left, next to the baseball diamond in the private school next door)
Georgia's got a couple of those too! We call this one "Spaghetti Junction". Sometimes I have to use it on my way home depending on if I need to run errands east of my house.
Fun fact: According to a list of traffic hotspots put out by the American Transportation Research Institute, Spaghetti Junction was number 1!
But aesthetically, at least this one looks kinda symmetrical if you squint hard enough. If you wanna see a real doozy, here's where I-20 meets I-75/85, smack dab in the heart of Atlanta.
Art
I see the devil is alive and well in America
everything i know about the united states i have learnt against my will etc etc
#is this why theres always those scenes in movies and such where amerians struggle with roundabouts??#do you guys just.. not have any?????
We have some, but not many. Depends on location. Some cities have them others don't. But for the most part, I'm pretty sure that even cities that have roundabouts don't typically have as many of them as a similar-sized European city would
Fly over, fly under, fly through, bypass, flypass, and the ol' switchback. All perfectly acceptable evolutionary aversions to the magic roundabout
Swindon knows what it did, and it shall never be free from the horrors of the circle's circle circle.
And yes, it's not just real, it's also very underwhelming to drive through with a local, and utterly terrifying to drive through if you're not with a Swindon guide.
So I used to live in Atlanta and currently live in a small town undergoing the "standard American model of expansion, post-Robert Moses" -- i.e., the city council keeps building single family home suburbs further and further out, necessitating a neverending cycle of debt
However, somebody on city council must have been paying attention to The Youth Demographic because they are suddenly building nothing but roundabouts instead of traffic lights in this fiscal year's new expansion
(of course they're badly designed because nobody in the US knows shit about roundabouts, including how to make the surrounding area compatible for like pedestrians and such, but it's still cute that someone's trying)

My friends of the internet, does anyone know of a meme of Endeavor from My Hero Academia as the Buldak chicken, advertising spicy ramen? It was original artwork I saw once on social media and never saved. SEO for this concept is a little rough and Google is only getting worse by the day so I thought I'd try here and Reddit
I seek this meme and the original artist; just want to see it again because I love Buldak.
Thank you for reading.
Not sure who needs to hear this but
You are not your job, and your salary is not your worth.
If my friend had a League of Legends MMO of like Iron 4, I would give no shits, because that friend's value cannot be defined by some arbitrary number in a computer somewhere.
So why should I care about how much money they make?
There is a distinct technique used by capitalists to bypass the legal and contractual rights of workers which to my knowledge has no name currently - so I’m giving it one - Lunch Grinding.
Lunch Grinding is a manipulative erosion of worker rights both in and out of the workplace. It bypasses legal and contractual standards through informal social pressures which the bosses cannot be held directly accountable for.
Lunch Grinding is named after one of the most common examples. It begins by asking a few employees to skip lunch in order to finish a project. Workers who are already insecure about their position due to economic anxiety will see this as an opportunity to prove they are a good employee. Those who refuse to do so may receive blame for failing to finish the project on time.
The issue becomes compounded when the bosses begin to purposefully schedule less time to complete the same projects. A distinct class begins to appear ignoring their contractual right to a lunch break - who become hostile to those who refuse to work during lunch for being “lazy” or “the reason we didn’t finish on time.”
At this point the management no longer needs to influence anyone directly to work through lunch break, simply by keeping up the sense of constantly being a little late for the project they have ensured the lunch-grinders will apply pressure to their peers who aren’t working through breaks.
As workplace hostility increases towards the “unproductive” members who are expressing their formal right to a break - they will be replaced with new individuals who may not even realize they have the right to a lunch break because working through the hour has become normalized by their peers.
Thus formal written standards from contracts and legal code become functionally non-existent. After which a new standard will be identified by management for erosion some examples include:
+Accepting uncertain hours. +Working off-the-clock. +Staying “On-Call” at all times. +Finishing projects / responding to emails at home. +Never using time off or sick leave.
All of which are socially conditioned in the same format - starting with “The Good Worker” who does a little favor for their boss - and ending as a peer enforced pressure and a perpetual hostility from management claiming productivity isn’t as high as expected.
This old post of mine feels increasingly relevant with the popular protest of worker’s mistreatment happening in the USA of late.
HUH???
THIS IS SO FUCKING FUNNYYYYYYY
it wasn't "some reason", it was 2D animators being unionized and 3D not being unionized. and the simple truth that capitalism kills art.
I remember when 2D faded out, the reason studios kept giving was "it's because 2D is a lot more expensive to produce". I was a child back then so I didn't think too much about it, assuming it was about the process itself, but as I grew up and learned more about art as an artist, and gained friends who were professional 3D artists themselves, I started to question it. Because 3D is very different from 2D, but it's definitely not easier or faster to make. Also, both European and Asian studios kept producing 2D animated movies
The answer was unions. The answer wasn't "this kind of art is cheaper because it's easier to make", it was "this kind of art is cheaper because these artists can't force us to pay them correctly"

all my haters become gators when I travel through the bayou of success
cant talk rn obsessed over the design concept of this 2017 production of pinocchio as a stage play where pinocchio is the only character played by a human actor and the rest of the cast are portrayed as puppets ,,,
like. how insanely poetic is this . you are a boy and you are made of wood but you know so entirely that you are more than wood, you are as human as anyone made of flesh and bone and it's not your fault that you came into the world with sap running through your veins instead of blood. and your entire life you are searching the world for what it means to be human but the dramatic irony of it all is that none of them know how to be human either. you keep reaching out for humanity and they seem so big and powerful but they are just puppets of a greater design too performing for an audience you cannot see. and whether you know it or not you are more human than any of them even if they are convinced you are just wood and paint and magic. im on the floor .im losing my mind over here. gimme a second guys hold on. wait a minute guys wait a goddamn minute like. wahta a good fucking design concept. head in hands !
okay but what company is this. what is the name of this. is there a video of this you can't just leave us hanging without credit
THANK YOU BASED ANON
