Fight Club (1999)
Triggers:
Rape and Sexual Assault: while none is shown, some characters are held down and their pants (but not underwear) removed threateningly.
Abuse (physical, mental, emotional, verbal, sexual): Lots of psychological torture, manipulation, and emotional abuse from one character in particular. There are also a lot of physical beatdowns, though not in an abusive setting.
Child abuse/pedophilia: mentioned flippantly
Animal cruelty or animal death: none noted
Self-injurious behavior (self-harm, eating disorders, etc.): Characters have sex while emotionally compromised, smoking, drinking, and one character brutally beats himself up (literally) in one scene.
Suicide: one character attempts an overdose, and another shoots themself in the head.
Excessive or gratuitous violence: some of the fights get very, very bloody, as well as realistic bruising in the aftermath. There is also a violent car crash, though all passengers in the vehicle survive.
Needles: none noted
Depiction of pornography (including child pornography): there are images of phalluses that only remain on screen for one frame.
Incest (including consensual relationships): There are a few mentions of it in writing onscreen, though not the focus of the shots.
Kidnapping (forceful deprivation of/disregard for personal autonomy): See above for sexual assault; held down, duct taped, and threatened. There is also a “stick up” of one character, pushed to the ground and with a gun to his head.
Death or dying: three deaths; one mentioned, one (gory) corpse shown, and one character dies (graphically) on screen.
Pregnancy/Childbirth: none noted
Miscarriages/Abortion: none noted
Blood: so much blood, including blood stains, blood from the mouth, gunshot wounds, bloodied faces, bloodied arms
Additional notes/triggers: David Fincher’s direction features some very high flicker rates, such as images appearing for one frame and disappearing, and earthquake-like effects, so epileptics beware.
There is a scene where two characters are stealing bags of fat from a liposuction plant, and one rips and spills messily (it is extremely gross).
Several characters have chemical burn scars, and one character receives a chemical burn on screen.
There are several bombings.
There is slight cissexism when a female character joins a testicular cancer support group.
There are support groups mentioned and sometimes shown for several diseases, including different types of cancer.
TW EMETOPHOBIA One character is shown throwing up (emetophobia) and there’s an imagine spot of a plane crash (fear of flying).
Fight Club is an excellent film, but it is trigger city. Make sure you’re in a good place before watching, because it has the potential to really shake someone.
