SKYBOX – the closest you’ll get to the sky when living on the prairies.

The Forks’ market in Winnipeg, home to the world’s longest naturally frozen skating trail annually hosts an open international competition to design riverside shelters which “push the envelope of design, craft, and art”. Despite the coldest winter on record, Winnipeg’s skating trail is experienced by over 300,000 visitors over the frigid season.

Harnessing Winnipeg’s trademark winter weather, SKYBOX creates a visual immersion of people against an ephemeral backdrop – the sky. A large reflective plane with attached seating opposes a vertical mirror, allowing visitors to use their camera to take a “selfie” of themselves appearing to sit among the clouds.

By uploading images with the tagline #SKYBOXWPG, the community can interact and engage with the Forks' skating trail. At the end of the winter season, visitors’ experiences will live on through a collected online mosaic of completely unique pictures on skyboxwpg.ca.
