Ooh boy. This is definitely 90’s writing style at its “finest”. Heroine making dumb choices that makes the dashing hero come to her rescue; recklessness that costs lives… However, I can’t fault Yuri completely because she’s only fifteen and desperate to go home. You can’t expect a fifteen-year-old girl to think rationally; if that were the case, she’d be Day 1 Mary Sue and she’s clearly not. And it makes sense why she’d be in a rush to get back because she’s a weak girl and everyone else in Anatolia can fight. I feel like the one good thing Yuri did in this episode was fighting back against the crazy class hierarchy customs of Anatolia in order to save Tito from execution. I know that for a story like this, Yuri is meant to develop progressively, but not even she can beat early writing woes…
But like…I feel like there are a lot of dumb writing choices in this episode as well. First off, why did one of Kail’s servants buy a water jug from a peddler? Even in modern day, you should know not to accept liquids out in the open; I feel like that whole scene is a bit of a nod to that. Like, Nakia even has scary water that brainwashes people; see what I mean about don’t accept liquids from others? People will freaking kill you. Second, couldn’t they just go in and save Tito and not cry about it? Kail has magic, right? I think he had wind magic shown in the previous episode? Why not blast the door open and rescue Tito?
Regarding Tito, I do feel like he was the best part of the episode; it sucks that he’s meant to be the sacrificial lamb that showcases the darker aspects of the story and the trigger for Yuri’s development. I also feel bad for him in the case that he just got away from being executed and now his fate is unknown in only a few hours. Kid’s got a rough life; there’s also a reason why he doesn’t show up in the opening…
I do appreciate how shoujo stories aren’t shying away from making creepy villains. Zuwa is both comical and creepy in that he looks a little silly but the fact that he likes wearing human skin amps up the creepy factor. Skinning people and wearing their skin is an insane hobby, honestly. Also, I do wonder if he’s also a magic user because he materializes from water; or it is a part of Nakia’s magic?
Tito is voiced by Maki Kawase who also voiced Yuri’s sister Eimi, making a nod to how similar they look and how Yuri’s first sense of comfort in Anatolia is with him. Zuwa is voiced by Yasuhiro Mamiya who voiced Hwang Dongseok in Solo Leveling, Kofu in Pokemon Horizons and Ash’s Gengar in Pokemon Journeys.
Hopefully, the pay off for Yuri will be good later on. I’m all for development, so I am not as annoyed as a lot of others are. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!

Ah, the anime censored the smut side of Red River. It has decent animation but I admit the anime artstyle is not it. The manga is more beautiful. This is like RORK where I recommend to read the manga than to watch the anime. I can't believe I manage to finish this manga since most men here are not my type. Maybe its the artstyle... That was what push me to finish it.
Red River's anime is only 2 episodes in and yet I'm already EXTREMELY disappointed. The plot feels rushed, scenes are cut or censored and I get the overall feeling it's just gonna have 12 episodes. This is such a shame and massive disappointment. I really had high hopes for the anime adaption, but I feel like all my excitement and expectations have gone to waste. (So much for "Red River Tuesdays" 😞👎🫤)
I am also watching Red River. And.. oh boy, I know this is an adaption of a manga from the 90s, but how distressed can one damsel be? Yuri manages to get kidnapped, assaulted, and nearly killed approximately every 5 minutes. Like, girl, if you don't know what is happening to you, maybe do indeed stay around the people who are clearly trying to protect you?
