Lian was out on a job with her mom, they went to a party, goal was to steal a necklace off the wife of the host.
They walked in, lots of fancy rich people

She looked around the room and looked at Lian, there was something coming to her face but the lady next to leaned into James and put her hand on the other side of James face so she couldn't pull away and said something to her.
Lian can see in James' micro movements she was uncomfortable.
lian was ready to fight her already, just for making james uncomfortable but she decided instead to become part of the crowd, grabbing a glass of wine and milling about making her way over to the lady. she took a swig of the wine before spitting it back into the drink, clear enough for her mom to see. If her mom hadnt been there she probably wouldve actually taken the sip.
James keeps people away from the woman she was with for a bit before being able to slip away into the balcony.
She pulled a flask out of her bra and opened it to take a swig
Lian battles for a second what to do but she ends up taking the opportunity to trip into the lady grabbing onto her to try and keep her balance. Keeping the lady's attention on her while she does her best slight of hand taking the necklace off and pocketing it. it was swift and practiced
James was still outside and Lian could see her from the balcony, but instead of looking out on the city, she was looking at Lian.
Lian made her way out onto the balcony then, trying to make it look like part of the plan to her mother. "hey, fancy seeing you here"
James crossed her arms and was not as inviting as she'd been the other times they've seen eachother
".... give it to me." She said firmly
she didnt want to lie to James so she didnt even bother to "I cant.."
"... you have to. I need it" her voice got quiet....and almost a little desperate
"Cant you just pretend you didnt see? I need-" she needed it too needed to prove she was ready to get back out so her mom would stop helicoptering her. But this was a small job, nothing serious, worst case is she gets benched or blocked from missions for a while and lots of extra training.
She handed it to james without a word and went to walk away. She'd fucked this up james was probably pissed never want to see her again, her mom was gonna be pissed unless she faked incompetence.
She gripped it in her hand
"hey wait" she started to take the jewelry she had off, it was just as expensive added up if that's what Lian was after
"No I- it's okay.." she didnt want to make it harder for the two of them to lie about the interaction
"why do you need this?" She held up the necklace
"A job" she said waving it off, she needed to get back to her mom before she got suspicious
