It is an absolute CRIME that Ninotchka has never gotten the Criterion treatment. If any Lubitsch deserved it, it's that one.

Charming enough. Garbo is wonderful until her character is annihilated. I was hoping this wouldn't be such a propaganda piece and I was disappointed. Reveals a belief among wealthy capitalists that they are typical of the capitalist society and that if only the Soviets could have lived like them they would abandon their communist ways. Never for a moment takes seriously any of its plenitude of lower class French characters. The one serious moment comes when the former Grand Duchess lays out quite clearly that the Cossacks should have shot disruptive workers rather than beat them. But this fragment of real bite quickly fades amid the monotonously clever and utterly meaningless dialog, and the completely unconvincing romance.
