âł Lugh, Celtic God of Sun and Craft
Lugh is known as the Celtic god of the sun and crafts. Both in Celtic and Irish mythology, he was known as a fierce warrior. Accordingly to legends, Lugh had miraculously survived a slaughter run by Balor, the leader of the evil underworld group, Formorii. Having said that, he was able to kill Balor by throwing an eye that had the ability to kill whomever looked at it.

Outside of the Emerald Isle, he wasnât very well known. Perhaps, he preferred it that way. He was now a young man, but one thing that hadnât changed since he was a boy was that he was quiet. That didnât mean that he hadnât already gained a reputation as a formidable, thoughtful, and loyal fighter and clansman who fiercely protected his people and his lands...
Christopher had spent years by his father Clementâs side, learning from him and protecting their borders with him and the rest of their clan. Troubling times had made father and son become very close. While his Aunt Deirdreâs death had ultimately changed and marked his father, it was his twin sister Lenaâs sudden departure and his mother Nicholaâs actions against her that ended up breaking him. Chris worked to become his fatherâs confidante, someone he could rely on and trust. Clement would later on credit Chris for encouraging and motivating him to continue forward after the separation between him and Nichola.
Despite her actions, Chris didnât hate his mother. He was once close to her when he was a little child, but once she held Lena back from training with him, and began to dote on her in other ways, Chris began to feel a distance begin to form. Perhaps that was why leaving with his father on important trips and missions became easier for him -- he felt like the two were in their own world together, and he was just intruding. That was also why Lenaâs sudden departure shocked him- he had no idea that the relationship between his sister and mother had soured so badly. Chris had tried to remain close to his sister then. He always wrote to her, telling her how much he missed her and telling her about his adventures. But, she just left Connacht without a word to him, and it hurt him greatly. He was angry for a long time, but his anger waned when she returned and he was told what happened. Their reunion, however, was lukewarm; he was happy Lena was safe and sound, but still, he felt that the bond and trust they once had in each other was now broken.Â
Regardless, when Lena went to live with their Uncle William for a while, Chris completely supported her decision. He felt that if his sister was to forgive their mother, some space was required. Their father, however, could not, and when they separated, Chris already knew it was coming. While Lena was far away, he was there when the marriage between their parents imploded. He was there to see how gutted his mother was, and how horribly heartbroken his father was. Still, his father didnât divorce her -- he kept their separation a secret from the rest of the clan. Only their immediate family knew. Clement told Chris it was because he still loved her as the mother of his children, and Connacht provided a safe haven for her. He didnât want to take that away, despite how angry and hurt he was. Ultimately, Chris never showed any anger toward his mother whenever he got to see her -- he remained kind and nice to her. She was his mother, after all, and she never once hurt him directly. She had disappointed him, but he still loved her, and he made sure to let her know that he did manage to visit her.
All of these events led Chris to become very close to his cousin Slania, whose warmth and broad-mindedness made Chris feel like it was easy to open up to her. It was easy to bond with her, as they constantly traveled together while she worked with his father. They trained together, hunted together, and she even taught him some Latin, which she was fluent in thanks to her late father. It was because of her influence that he eventually found himself becoming more easygoing; He could be himself around her. When he told her he loved to draw, maps in particular, she encouraged it, and eventually, he was able to make maps for the clan to use. Unfortunately, his cousinâs relationship with their father deteriorated. That was one of the things Chris strongly disagreed his father with; his harsh treatment of Slania. Eventually, she left for Wexford, and they kept a frequent correspondence with each other. Her absence was greatly felt. He eventually began to bond more with the other person who missed Lani: her older sister Riley.
He knew by then that Riley was his trueborn older sister, as his father told him the sad tale of Riley becoming adopted by his Aunt Deirdre and Uncle Maxim. Such information didnât exactly change his view of Riles; he grew up seeing her as a cousin, and thatâs how he still saw her. Now, Riley was lively and loved to have long conversations -- the complete opposite of Chris. But, he found himself not minding it at all. Riley had a way of telling stories, and he liked to listen to her speak. Sheâd always chided him on how many girls in Connacht eyed him and informed him that she could easily set him up, which he always refused with a laugh. Riley was funny, and it helped him forget whatever woes plagued him for a short while.
When his cousin Eamonn, whom he got along decently with, left his family for good, he comforted her, as his departure greatly affected her. He began to stay at her house more often, as his father and Uncle William, who were now busier than ever, wanted someone to check in on her every now and then.Â
One night, after being away with his father and Uncle Will while they negotiated with a clan from Mide, he found his way to Rileyâs home under the hill. He knocked on the door and eventually, she opened it. Right away, her mouth dropped open upon seeing him.
âChris! You grew a fuckinâ beard!â She pointed out with a big smile. âOoh, and you grew out your hair -- You look so good!â
Chris smiled bashfully, giving her a hug before she let him in. After some time, they were both sitting on the table by her kitchen, with Riley drinking some mulled wine and Chris drinking a cup of ale.
âI got lazy and just let my beard grow in,â Chris told her, rubbing his bearded chin with his free hand, âSame with my hair.â
âI think you should stick with that look,â Riley replied with a knowing nod. âSo, whatâs going on with you? How are the dealings by Mide?â
âIâve been well, thank you for askinâ. And theyâre going on. Father met with a Chieftain and theyâre mulling over some terms.â Chris said, sipping his ale slowly, as he didnât like to drink too much. âThings are a bit slow, so he suggested I come in for a quick visit. He says hello and hopes youâre doing well. Uncle Will says you better not be causing any trouble.â
âMe? Cause trouble?â Never...â Riley said with faux indigence, a hand on her chest dramatically before she scoffed. âMy sisters have fought battles and nearly gotten killed more than once, but I am the problem child?â
âYou know what they say about you short women and your wild tempers...â Chris casually said, unable to help himself. That earned him a sharp look from Riley, who promptly smacked him on the top of his hand with a quick motion. Chris pulled back his hand, chuckling away.Â
âShush, you! I open my door to you and this is the treatment I get?!â Exclaimed Riley with a pout, but there was a hint of a smile, followed by a roll of her hazel eyes. âBut anyway, Iâve been just fine! Been regrowing the garden. Aiden sent over some seeds and I planted some this morning.â
The garden his Aunt Deirdre grew over the years burned down when Eamonnâs enemies attacked the home. Riley had been devastated by it, so he was glad to see her work on it again.
âThatâs great! Itâs been long overdue,â Then, Chris squinted his eyes. âYou and Aiden have been, uh, speaking a lot huh?â
Riley turned a bright red, but she grinned. âI guess you can say that. Weâre just friends, but I dunno. My mother used to say, âwhere there was once a fire, the ashes left behind could burn again.â I donât want to pressure him into anything more, but I donât know...I think there still be something there.â
She then waved her hands around. âLetâs change the subject. This is making me anxious!â She took in a deep breath, calming herself. âHow are your mother and sister?â
âDunno. If I have enough time tomorrow, maybe Iâll stop by her home. She hasnât written back, but she has had these bouts where I donât hear from her for a long time.â Chris said, looking down at the cup of ale in his hand. âIâve heard Lenaâs been around her more often again, so Iâm sure sheâs keeping an eye on her.â
Chris drank the ale, trying to ignore the sad look Riley offered him. She was aware of the drift between the twins, just as the rest of their family was.Â
âYou mean to visit your mother, but not your sister?â asked Riley, carefully raising her brows.
Chris shrugged, putting his cup down. âIf sheâs there, Iâll say hello. I dunno, thereâs not much to say.â
Riley nodded slowly. âNo, I get it. Youâre not the only one with a sibling who caused a great stir in the Frankish Kingdom...â
Chris smirked a bit at that, but then, sat back, eyes towards the ceiling. âYeah...whatâs important is that sheâs close with Father now, and hopefully, getting on better with mother. I know that matters to her a great deal...I know being around you helped her a lot. Uncle Will told me that.â
âHm...Sometimes, itâs better to love someone from afar. But, are you alright with that?â asked Riley, her voice full of concern.
Chris thought about it for a long moment, then, he let out a shallow sigh. âIâm used to it now. I also got you cousins to fill in the gaps, so Iâll be fine.â
Riley smiled, reaching over a squeezing his hand. âGlad I could help her and you... Oooh, speaking of cousins, Lani said she plans to visit soon.â
That definitely perked him up. âReally? When?â
âSoon, she says. Sheâs got to do some work, but once sheâs done, sheâll be headed our way! Iâll let you know so you can be around! She says she misses you a lot.â Riley replied.
âI miss her too. Iâd appreciate that a lot. I mean to be here when she is--â
There was a knock on the door. Both he and Riley went still. Then, there was another knock. It was late at night now, so someone knocking on Rileyâs door at that hour was strange right away.
âAre you expecting company?â He asked quietly.
When Riley shook her head no, Chris slowly stood up, reaching for his sword that was upon his belt. With his sword out, he approached the door, with Riley not far behind him.Â
He opened the door slowly, and there stood a messenger, with an extremely urgent message...
After her two sisters arrived from the turbulent trip to the kingdom of Snow Mystic, Riley had visited Fay right away, who had told her all the happenings of the trip. Riley had planned a visit to Slania in Wexford, but Slania revealed that she was very busy during those days. There were new projects happening in Wexford, most of which Slania was in charge of overseeing. Riley decided to postpone her visit, and told Slania via letters that she should visit Connacht instead. Slania, to Rileyâs surprised, agreed that a visit was long overdue, and promised to visit once she got the chance. She herself was busy helping Clement with Clan affairs.Â
Since their closest allies had a new chieftain, Cathal mac Conchobair, Clement became more busy, and Riley helped him with things such as corresponding to messages for him, and recieving important visitors in his absence. Chris, her âcousinâ, helped her with these tasks when he could, and they became a little closer as a result.Â
Eventually, she recieved a letter from Snow Mystic. Riley hestitated to open it, but strangely, her gut feeling told her to read it. In that letter, she learned that Layla, a girl who had lived with her family in Wexford for a few years, had died after childbirth. There was a quiet sadness in Riley. She felt surprise, but at the same time, she wasnât entirely shocked. It was as if her death had already happened to Riley, and the letter only made it a reality. She meant to send a reply, but got caught up in the Clan matters once again soon after.
Aiden Ă MĂłrĂĄin and Riley had kept in touch despite his busy schedule. Aiden worked directly with Cathal, so he only managed to visit her twice since the reconciliation of their friendship. Riley found herself absolutely joyful when she recieved his letters, and would write him a response right away. So one particular cloudy and rainy morning, a letter had arrived for Riley. She was excited at first, but when she saw the seal, her excitement instantly waned. She put the letter on her kitchenâs table rather than open it right away. That afternoon, there was a knock on her door, and there stood Fay, a hooded cloak covering her from the rain.
âWhat a surprise! Come in, come in!â Riley greeted with a smile, shuffling her sister out of the cold rain. Fay removed her cloak and boats, then hugged her hello. They made their way to the kitchen, where Riley began to warm up some wine for them both.
âYou cut your hair.â Riley remarked right away as she fetched some cups.Â
Fay touched her white-blonde hair, and smiled.
âI did. I enjoyed having long hair, but I donât have the patience to deal with it.â Fay told her with a shrug.Â
âMy hair refuses to grew back, can you believe it?â asked Riley incredulously, pointing at her own head. âLuckily, I like having my hair this way, but if I ever desire long hair again, it will be a challenge.â
âI think that cut suits you,â Fay said with a low chuckle.
Riley poured the warmed wine in cups and as she went to give Fay hers, Fay held up the letter she had recieved earlier that day.Â
âI came to visit to show to you a letter I recieved but I think you may have gotten one too.â Fay said with raised brows, taking her wine as Riley sat down.
âUgh. Letters from that place have never been good ones.â Riley bemoaned, nursing her cup for a moment before she gestured to the letter.
Fay handed it over and Riley opened it, reading its contents.
â...Caspianâs wife is dead?â Riley blurted out in surprise.
âThatâs what mine said too.â Fay stated quietly, rising her cup to her lips to take a drink.
Riley read the rest of the letter, but when she reached the end, she scoffed, and placed the letter down. âThis wasnât even from Caspian, so I donât know why we were informed.â
âDidnât you meet his wife?â asked Fay. âI didnât get the chance to the last time I was over there.â
âI did once -- on their wedding day. She invited me, not Caspian.â Riley replied with a roll of her eyes. âShe was very quiet, kept to herself. But she was a nice girl.â Riley pursed her lips, glancing at the letter. âWhat a shame. She died young.â
âIt doesnât seem that queens fair very well in Snow Mystic,â Fay commented thoughtfully.Â
âNo,â Riley agreed, âMaybe Iâll send a letter formally giving my condolences. His now late wife was kind enought to invite me to their wedding, so perhaps I shall return the kindness.â
âIf you do, you can put my name in there as well, seeing that they also sent me a letter about it.â Fay suggested.
âIf you say so.â Riley said with a shrug. Then, she pursed her lips as a thought came to mind. âDo you plan to let Katy know or does she know already?â
Fay hestitated and leaned back against her seat.
âI plan to give her the letter and let her decide to read it or not. Thereâs a lot of bad history between her and Caspian. She never speaks about him, and the last time she did years ago, she was very upset.â Fay frowned.
âHas he even apologized, as he?â Riley flatly commented, pausing to take a drink of warm wine. âThe fact that he hasnât speaks volumes.â
âI know.â Fay mumbled. âBut, Katy is a lot more caring than she likes to show. So, I donât know what her decision will be.â
Riley eyed the letter before her again. Then, she asked, âWho is Lucas Duncan again? Heâs the one who wrote this letter.â
âI believe he is Carolinaâs cousin.â Then, Fay paused, eying Riley. âAnd he was Laylaâs husband.â
â... Oh.â Riley simply said, feeling that quiet sadness again.
Fay also looked quite down when Laylaâs name was mentioned. There was a silence between the two sisters for a moment.
âCanât believe sheâs actually dead.â Fay sighed, tracing her finger upon the cupâs brim.Â
âItâs strange. To me, it was as though she was already dead, and this only made it more real.â Riley revealed. âItâs like with Eamonn...â
Fay nodded somberly, understanding what she meant.Â
âItâs a twisted sense of irony that those two ended up the first to leave us.â Fay sadly remarked. âThey were so close once.â
âAlthought seperated eventually, it was both of their destinies to leave us behind.â Riley muttered, feeling a mix of bitterness and downheartedness. âAt least she left her husband a child.â
âIt wonât be easy to raise a child on your own. I experienced that for a few years, so I know how difficult it can be. But, it can be done. Letâs hope he manages.â Fay remarked.
Riley looked at Fay, then, her gaze went upon her mug. She and her sisters had lost so much those past few years. But, they still remained, and that was important to Riley. So she rose her mug with a hint of a smile.
âTo moving forward.â She declared.
Fay blinked, but soon, a small smile displayed upon her lips as she rose her own cup.

âYew Trees were sacred to our ancestors. They no doubt observed the treeâs qualities of longevity and regeneration. Drooping branches of old yew trees can root and form new trunks where they touch the ground. Thus the yew came to symbolise death and resurrection.â
Cathal mac Conchobairâs visit to Clan Conanâs territories was a lot longer than Riley thought it would be. What she thought would be only a couple of days turned out to be weeks. Cathal spoke a lot with Clement, and according to her Uncle William, there were a number of disagreements. One of the bigger ones was their views concerning Northerners. Cathal loathed them, and wanted them off the isle. Clement had a more neutral stance, which caused much tension between the two leaders who were trying to strengthen and redefine their Allied relationship.
This worried Riley, but the good thing about having Cathal around meant Aiden was around for much longer. Aidenâs duty was to accompany Cathal, as he did his late older brother, Chieftain Ăed, so most of his time was spent with Cathal. But, there were moments when Aiden had some free time, and it was spent catching up with her. Aiden revealed that after she had ended things with him, he spent a long time alone. He became involved in the army of Conchobairâs, which is how he caught the eye of Ăed, becoming someone close and trusted by him, and he also updated her about the happenings within his own family. Riley told him about the death of her adoptive mother Deirdre, and how difficult it was. She told her about all about Eamonn, and how he would randomly show up, and the things he did that hurt her and her sisters. Riley noticed that they both avoided asking each other about their love lives, and she tried to resist the urge to ask him about his, until one night, when Cathal was busy speaking to Clement again, leaving Aiden able to have dinner with Riley alone at her house.Â
As they cleaned up, Riley kept eying Aiden from the corner of her eye. It still surprised her how giddy she felt around him. She had tried to surpress it, but the more they spent time together, she felt it grow and grow. This bothered her, and she didnât want to find herself yearning for the impossible once he went home. So, she cleared her throat and finally asked the question she dreaded to ask, even if she already knew the answer:
âI heard you got married.â She said, trying to sound as casual about it as possible.
Aiden had been wiping their plates dry with a cloth and he paused. There was a rather conflicted look on his face before he continued to wipe the plates.
âI did. To Ăedâs and Cathalâs cousin. My family advised me that it was best to marry before I got too old, so I agreed. I have a son -- his nameâs Eoin.â Aiden replied calmly, not looking at her.
Riley felt happy about him having a child, but alongside that, there was a jab of jealousy as she washed the cups they had used. Still, she did her best to look content. âA son! Congratulations! Iâm very happy for you, Aiden!â
âThank you. I heard youâve become involved with someone.â Aiden remarked while he kept his eyes upon the plates.
Riley tilted her head. âWho told you that? Ăed?â
When Aiden nodded, she scoff lightly, surprised that the man would carry such news to him.Â
âHis name was Elidyr, and there was a brief romance, but he chose to leave with my brother rather than to stay with me.â Riley grumbled, crossing her arms.
Aiden paused, then turned to look at her with surprise. âWait, he chose your brother over you?â
âYes! He couldnât even tell me himself. Eamonn was the one who declared that he was leaving with him!â Riley complained. She had intially felt sad his departure, but once time had passed by, the sadness vanished, and she found herself feeling rather offended about the matter.  âThatâs why Iâm convinced that it was my brother he truly wanted, but he was too ashamed to pursue him, so he went after me instead!â
Aiden pursed his lips, but Riley could tell he was holding back laughter.Â
âItâs not funny!â She insisted indignantly as a chuckle escaped Aiden, but he shook his head, holding up a hand.
âItâs-- no, itâs not. Iâm sorry. Itâs just, your theory sounds ridiculous at first, but then again, your brother did look like your twin, so... Iâm just amused by how plausible the possibility is. Youâre probably right, yâknow.â Aiden explained sincerely before he gave her a frown. âBut either way, good riddance. The man was not deserving of you.â
Riley stared at him. His kindness cut into her heart like a knife. She had broken the heart of this man terribly so many years ago, and there he was, telling her that she deserved better. In fact, he had been so damn amicable and nice since their reunion. She looked away, blinking away tears.
âYouâre sweet, Aiden. Wrong, but sweet.â Riley told him as she put away the cups in her cupboard. âYour wife is a lucky woman.â
âIâm not wrong.â Aiden replied quietly with a shake of his head, and then, he turned to fully face her. âOur marriage was one of convenience, Riley.â
â...Was?â Riley asked, catching on that he strangely spoke about his marriage in past tense.
âShe died about two years ago.â Aiden revealed after some hestitation. Riley covered her mouth. She hadnât heard anything about that, so this came as a shock to her.
âWhat? How?â Riley asked urgently once she lowered her hands.
âOur marriage wasnât one created from passionate love. But we got along well. We had something in common, and I think that helped us form a strong friendship. But after she had Eoin, she changed,â Aiden told her, a great sadness in his eyes. âShe was so detatched from him, as if she resented him. I tried everything I could to make her feel better, but she became detached from me and then everything else. One day, I was called to come home immediately. Her mother had gone to visit and found our son alone, crying and hungry. We looked for her for days, and we found her dead, most likely by her own hand.â
Riley, feeling a great sorrow for Aiden and the terribly hardship he and his son went through, put a comforting hand on his back. âThatâs terrible, Aiden. I am truly sorry for your loss.â
Aiden nodded softly, falling silent for a moment. Then, he moved to stand closer to Riley, until their shoulders brushed against each other. âI didnât mean to keep that from you. I just didnât expect to have the chance to speak with you like this again. I didnât know how to bring it up.â
Riley offered him a half smile. âYou donât owe me anything, yâknow. So, donât worry. In fact, I didnât think youâd ever talk to me again...â The guilt from before returned, and now, she felt overwhelmed. Unable to contain it any longer, she turned slightly and looked him in the eye, not caring if he could see her tears form. âAiden, Iâm so sorry for hurting you.â
When Aiden shook his head and began to protest, Riley grabbed his hand. âPlease, let me finish.â Once he seemed to relent, she released him.
âIâve criticized my brothers Eamonn, Ryan, and Tristian for leaving me behind, for not considering my feelings, but Iâm no different. I did that to you.â  Rileyâs voice broke, and those tears fell, but she pressed on, as this was something she had wanted to tell him for years. âI... was so convinced I was so undeserving to be loved, to have love... I made a choice I thought was best for the both of us, but I didnât even stop to consider how you felt, what you wanted. I didnât let you have a choice, or even a voice in the matter. That was so incredibly wrong of me.â
Aidenâs eyes went downcast, and he looked woeful, as the memory of their break up was clearly still a painful one to him as it was for her.Â
âI apologize for all the hurt and heartbreak Iâve caused you. I didnât mean to do that to you, but I did and I hate myself for doing that to you...â
A great sob escaped from her, causing her to cover her face with her shaking hands. As she wept, she felt Aidenâs hands grab her wrists gently. It didnât take him much to pull her hands away from her face. For a brief moment, she felt embarassed, feeling that she looked ugly crying in such a way. She even felt her nose become runny. Yet, Aiden didnât seem to care. He had tears in his eyes, and he looked distressed.
âDonât hate yourself, Riley. Please. Donât do that anymore.â He pleaded, âIt breaks my heart to know you still feel that about yourself.â
That worsened her guilt. She began to pull away from him, her voice taut and high pitched as she sobbed. âOh no! I didnât meant to do it again -- Iâm so sorry!â
âNo no no, Riley. Listen.â Aiden replied in a soft tone, putting his hands firmly on the side of her face, âI accept your apology. I truly do. But I already forgave you a long time ago.â
âYou did?â Riley sniffled, tears blurring her vision.
âYes. It did hurt me greatly when you ended our relationship suddenly. I was angry, but it was because I thought you let Svejn Kveldulf win.â He explained, wiping tears away with his thumbs as they fell. â With time, and especially after what I went through, I came to understand the type of guilt and grief you felt. I wish I knew then what I know now. Maybe then I couldâve handled things better.â
It was now Rileyâs turn to shake her head. âNo, you did the best you could. And Iâll always appreciate you for it.âÂ
She took his hands and pulled them from her face, but she kept holding them as she tried to smile, but she ended up frowning sadly.
âI miss you. There were so many things Iâve wanted to talk to you about.â
Aiden smiled slightly, and gave her hands a warm squeeze. âI miss you too. Weâre talking now, arenât we?â
Riley nodded, but once again overcome with emotion, she couldnât help but squeak when she asked:Â âCan...can we be friends again?â
Aiden chuckled lowly and wrapping his arms around her, hugging her tightly. âOf course we can.â
Riley now sobbed into his shoulder, but this time, it was out of relief, and happiness.
----
Not long after, Riley was wiping her face with a cloth as Aiden watched.
â...Youâre still the only man whoâs seen me ugly cry like this. Iâll have to kill you if you ever mutter a word about this to anyone.â She muttered, glancing at him as she wiped her nose.
Laughter escaped from Aiden. âI wonât tell a soul. And you call that ugly? I thought Conans were incapable of being ugly.â
Riley couldnât help but smile as she lowered the cloth from her now cleaned face. âSome of us come close when we cry.â
Aiden looked away, still laughing, which caused her to let out a laugh too. Soon after, he eyed her quietly for a moment.
âNow that weâre friends again, I feel as though I should warn you about something.â He began, looking troubled.
Rileyâs brows furrowed. âAbout what?â
âItâs Cathal. As you may know, since the death of his older brother, heâs become incredibly hateful towards all Northerners, especially those who live on this great isle. Heâs become incredibly angry with the fact that Slania chose to support her Northern cousin. In fact, heâs been insistently asking Clement about when sheâll be back in Connacht, and how he could let her ârun offâ to aid âfilthy Northerners.â Itâs so much that Iâve been wondering if this just about the death of his brother at the hands of Northerners. ...Do you know of anything that may have occured between him and your little sister?â
Riley felt unsettled. Not so long ago, she had talked with Fay about how little they knew about Slaniaâs personal matters. Clement thought it was strange that Cathal had asked for Slania, and apparently, so did Aiden.
â...Slaniaâs been very private when it comes to her personal things. I think a reason is because of what happened to me. Eamonn would always criticize me for my choices, and kept trying to intrude in my personal life. He did that with Fay too. He kept blaming me for Svejnâs death.â
Aiden right away began to look angry.
âIt was a shitty thing he did, but thereâs no use in becoming angry towards someone whoâs long gone.â Riley insisted. Once Aiden relaxed, she continued. âI became someone unreliable to her once mother died. I isolated myself for a long time, so whatever happened to her during that time, I donât know about. Still, I donât like the feeling I get when Iâm around Cathal. He was basically interrogating me before.â
Aiden nodded solemnly. âI was always closer to Ăed, but I do know that Cathal changed a great deal after his death. Donât get me wrong: Heâs been a decent leader thus far. Ăed was a better warrior, but Cathal is a better politician. Still, heâs got a strong vendetta against Northerners, and he means to act upon it. Many back home support this cause.â Then, there was a pause. He took in a deep breath. âI think you should warn your sister when you get the chance.â
Riley pressed her lips together. Her gut told her this had the potential to be a problem not only for Slania, but for possibly the people of Wexford.
âI will. Iâm going to go visit her very soon.â She told him.Â
âAlright.â Aiden replied, looking more at ease. âI donât think weâll be staying for longer, by the way.â
This caused Riley to pout, but then, she remembered about his son, and instead, she gave him an understanding look. âIâm sad about that, but I understand. You do have your boy to get home to. How old is he, by the way?â
âHeâs lived through four springs.â Aiden told her proudly.Â
âOoh, a spring baby like me!â Riley said excitedly, feeling solidarity with a boy she hadnât even met before. Then, she bumped her shoulder into his. âMaybe I can meet him someday.â
âOf course you can.â Aiden said with a warm smile. âMaybe I can visit more often, especially since weâre friends again and all...â
Crows on the battlefield are harbingers of doom. They await the battleâs end to feast on the fallen. The Irish warrior goddesscalled the Badbh is a crow goddess. Badbh literally means âcrow.â âscald crowâ or âravenâ but it also has the added connotation of â-witch.â She is a mysterious spirit.Â
Badbh may be a title, not a name. It is used as an epithet for other Irish warrior goddesses, like Macha, the Morrigan and Nemain. The Badbh is very closely associated with the Morrigan; some perceive Morrigan and Badbh as two names for the same spirit. The Badbh may also be the same spirit as the Gaulish deity, Cathobodua, in which case her veneration was widespread in the ancient Celtic world.Â
Her power on the battlefield is psychological: the Badbh doesnât actually fight on behalf of devotees. Instead, she terrifies, intimidates, and confuses their enemies with her presence. The Badbh appears in the epic Ulster Cycle. She is closely associated with the hero, Cu Chulain, assisting and encouraging him on several occasions. In addition to her responsibilities on the battlefield, the Badbh is associated with death and the Otherworld.

[Â For Part One and Two, see previous posts here and here. ]
Aiden Ă MĂłrĂĄin stood in front of her, staring at her as she, with her mouth agape, stared at him in return. His once long hair that reached his shoulders had been cut short. His once clean shaven face now sported stubble growth. He had aged, but it suited him very well. A faint smile appeared on his handsome face as he approached her and without warning, he wrapped his arms around her.
âIâm so glad youâre safe...â He said sincerely, giving her a squeeze as Riley simply stood there, too stunned to move.
Rileyâs hazel eyes darted in all different directions as her mind became overwhelmed with thoughts. The last time she had seen Aiden was ten years prior, when she tearfully told him she could not be with him any longer. He begged her to reconsider, but Riley, broken at the thought of Svejn Kveldulf throwing himself upon the spears of his enemies because of her rejection of him, ended her relationship with Aiden, believing that he was better off without someone like her.
As a older, more knowing woman, she then realized that breaking up with Aiden was not neccesary, as she truly had no fault in Svejnâs death.Â
The last time she saw him, he had a desolate look on his face, caused by heart break. But there he was, hugging her and relieved that she was out of harmâs way. Eventually, she felt herself ease into his embrace, closing her eyes for a moment. She felt relieved to see him alive and well too. Then, worried she had hugged him too long for it to be appropriate, she pulled away from him, clearing her throat as she managed to give him an awkward smile.
âI...Yeah, Iâm safe.â Riley stammered, frowning right away as she realized how nervous she suddenly felt with Aiden there. That was something new. âYou -- Uhm ...You cut your hair.â
âAs did you,â Aiden said, his eyes on the sides of her face where the ends of her hair rested, âIt actually suits you well. It brings out your features more.â
Riley couldnât help but smile at the compliment. âSo many years later, and you still canât help but boost my ego, hm?â
âIt comes naturally.â Aiden smiled, and Rileyâs heart lept upon seeing it. He had such a friendly and inviting smile, and it always made her feel content to see it.Â
She felt undeserving of such a smile, and feeling guilty, she looked away. âWhy are you here?â
From the corner of her eye, she could see Aiden frown. He also looked elsewhere, his gaze towards the hills seen at a distance from her home. âI heard about what happened with you and Eamonn. I had the opportunity to at least see from a distance if you were truly safe and sound, and I took it.â
Riley winced, and tried to ignore the painful pang in her chest at the mention of her brother. It was still a painful subject for her, especially after what her younger sister Slania had revealed in Wexford.Â
âIt wasnât neccessary, Aiden. But... I appreciate your concern. So, thank you for checking on me.â Riley said quietly, and she could see Aiden nod his head gently.
âYouâre welcome.â He said.
Riley wanted to ask him so many questions, and her guilt protested against it. She felt like she didnât have a right to ask him about his life, especially after the way she broke his heart. But this was the first time they had seen each other in a decade, so her curiousity was eating away at her. But, before she could finally give in to her impulses, Aiden beat her to the punch.
âI heard your brother caused a battle here and then left for good. Is that true?â Aiden mentioned, keeping his gaze away from hers.
Riley blinked. âWho told you that?â
âThe Conchobairs... My family has become closely allied to his in these recent years. Iâm currently serving under Cathal.â Aiden revealed, which made her look at him in surprise.
âYou serve Clan Conchobair now? Well, thatâs certainly something new.â Riley replied with a brow raised. But then, she let out a sigh. âItâs not that he caused it, but my fatherâs former right hand man had other sons after the war. Apparently, they promised their father on his death bed that theyâd take revenge on us for ... for Svejn.â
Saying his name in front of Aiden all those years later left a bitter taste in her mouth. After so many years of feeling sorry for the man, Riley now resented him, his father, and even the half brothers he never knew. Aiden frowned and cursed under his breath. Riley wondered if she had rekindled the resentment Aiden felt towards Svejn from all those years ago, starting from the days when Svejn would refuse to accept her rejection.
âBut, theyâre dead,â Riley continued, âBut the damage was done to my brother. He left because he feels weâre safer without him. We couldnât change his mind, so we let him go.â
âDamn. Thatâs rough. Iâm sorry you and your family went through that. Truly.â Aiden leaned against the wall of her home, looking at her sympathetically. â...I know this may sound shallow, but you look good. You seem ... less burdenered, more at peace. Itâs a good look.â
âHeh. There you go with the ego boosting again,â Riley pointed out with narrowed eyes.
âI suppose that despite the time that has gone by, some things donât change,â Aiden retorted with a smile.
Riley smiled back, and before she could ask him a question about his life, the door of her home opened and out walked Cathal mac Conchobair, not even looking their way but still, he spoke out towards Aiden.
âLetâs go. Weâll return here in the afternoon,â Cathal told him, with a rather sour look on his face.
Riley and Aiden watched him go and Aiden let out a long sigh.
âI better get going then. Uh, do you want to have a drink tomorrow evening? Itâs been such a long time and Iâd like to catch up.â Aiden said, raising his brows.
Riley smiled a bigger smile, unable to help herself. âIâd like that, Aiden.â
âGreat! See you tomorrow then,â Aiden flashed her a grin and he walked towards where Cathal had gone.
She watched him go, feeling her heart beating fiercely in her chest. She never thought sheâd see Aiden again, and not only did she see him, but he wanted to talk to her! She thought he hated her all those years, so it was a great relief to know that it wasnât the case at all ...
She was so busy being happy about her surprise encounter, she didnât even see Clement walk outside and stand next to her.Â
âEverything alright?â Clement asked curiously, causing her to jump a bit in surprise.
âHuh?! Oh! ...Oh yeah ...Iâm good.â Riley replied nervously, âUh, everything alright with you? Cathal didnât look so thrilled.â
Clement crossed his arms. âI donât know. Weâve been allies with Clan Conchobairs for many, many years. I just hope that dealing with this new leadership doesnât prove to be too difficult, but Iâm already not so optimistic... I donât like that heâs so friendly with the man whose plan led to his brotherâs death.â
âIt is weird that he trusts him so much,â Riley agreed.
âDo you know if Slania has ever mentioned him before? He asked again when sheâll return, and itâs just strange that he kept asking that.â Clement asked.
Riley agreed with that too, frowning as she nodded. âIt is. And no, sheâs never mentioned him to me before... Maybe I should ask her why he keeps asking for her?â
âIf you get the chance, you should. Or tell her to contact me as soon as she can.â Clement told her seriously, âBecause I donât think heâll be happy to know that one of ours is living amongst northerners.â
âI think I fall in love a little bit with anyone who shows me their soul. This world is so guarded and fearful. I appreciate rawness so much.â
â Emery Allen
Once it was all over, her stare remained on the âleechesâ â all slaughtered first by Slania, and then by Keiran. Her breathing was just as heavy as his, but hers was labored and more shallow. She turned her head to look at him, her stare wide-eyed and intense.Â
Then, her eyes inched upwards towards the tall trees above them that were swayed by a cool breeze...
âThe tall, redheaded woman was just as stunning in elegant clothing as she was in armor. While she looked terrifying on the battlefield, there was a grace to her movements then.â [x]
One of the Irish names for a Scald/Hooded Crow is âBadhbhâ. This is derived from an ancient Irish war goddess known as badb, who often took the form of a crow as she flew over the battle fieldÂ

[ The following is a log of a scene involving Layla and Slania. ]
[ W/ @thedawnbeauty ]
thedawnbeauty
: a soft knock, followed by a loud knock. Layla hasnât any experience with Slania, and she was just a kid when Riley and Fay all lived in the same household. There was an uneasy feeling caught in her throat, as she bent over and coughed into one of the marble statues. â Slania, you awake?â She forced herself up right â letâs go for a walk, okay?â (D)
my-sensorium
Now, there was noise coming from the room Slania and Carolina shared -- including a sleepy grunt that sounded a little too masculine to sound like either woman ... "I wouldn't that if I were you. Not unless you want someone to chew your head off." said a rather familiar voice. It sounded just like Deirdre's, just with less of a Celtic accent. Once Layla turned to her left, she'd see Slania walking towards her, holding a half empty bottle of ale in her hand. Last time, Lani looked on edge and exhausted. Now, she looked a little more at peace and the circles under her eyes looked less dark. Someone had gotten some sleep! And there was a reason for that, but that reason had gone to speak to Destiny. "You're Layla, right?" Slania stated once she stood in front of the woman. "You said something about taking a walk?" [d]
thedawnbeauty
â hey.â She turned looking at her â I can take another minute in this place going through every hall, this place is a maze. But I did see they have forest, and yes please a walk in needed.â She gestured her head knowing the way â atleast you got a room, I was given a pillow. He doesnât like me much â (d)
my-sensorium
"Hm... Alright." Slania replied with a raised brow. She and Layla were practically strangers to each other, so it was strange to her at first that Layla would want to take a walk with her. She took a quick swig of ale before she began to walk side by side with her. Slania took a moment to eye the shorter woman (assuming Layla did not stand at six feet like she was.) "I actually slept in the kitchen last night. I only slept for a little while, but it was the best sleep I've had since being here." Slania said with a half smile.[d]
thedawnbeauty
â this place will do it for you, itâs haunted Iâm sure.â She turned down the hall, pushing open the door, that lead towards the garden path. She gave her a weak smile, she was indeed shorter, taller than Riley, but shorter â Howâs everything been.. since weâll tell me. The last time I saw everyone Eamonnâ she paused and titled her head a little unsure but continued â he was stopping me from hurting someone, told me I should keep what I had to myself - my gifts â she tried to clarify. (D)
my-sensorium
Since Slania had finally gotten some rest, and had spent some quality time with someone she completely trusted, her normal friendly demeanor was in full display. She seemed relaxed, and in a better mood. But as soon Layla brought up Eamonn, a somber expression instantly replaced her amicable one. Just the mention of her brother's name brought a wave of sadness unto her. "Is that so? Ah. I've forgotten he used to be wiser..." Then, she frowned deeply, realizing she'd have to be the bearer of bad news. "Lots of bad events happened, and some were caused by him; Including the fires of Wexford." Slania hesitated, pressing her lips together. "Uhm... he's gone. Not dead, but he decided to leave our family forever." [d]
thedawnbeauty
She stopped again her tracks and frowned â He was special, you know, made you heard and nice. He used to smile, and I remember your mother loved his smile. Leaving behind your family, is the most selfish and loving decision a person can make. You think itâs loving because you assume everyone will have such a great life without you, and itâs selfish because you leaving only makes everyone miserable.â She took a deep breathe and continued their walk â I Should know, I pretty much made that decision more than once. Iâm sure he wakes up everyday in pain and wishes he could take back everything he did, but knows itâs impossible and heartbreaking for everyone. Did he start the fires?â (D)
my-sensorium
Slania looked away, uncomfortably trying to withhold as much as her sadness as she could. But, she couldnât hide all of it. Just the look in her bright blue eyes was melancholic. âThatâs the Eamonn I remember from my childhood. The one that came back after my fatherâs death, however, was not that.â Then, she offered Layla a sad smile. âYou are fortunate enough to only have the good memories of him.â She let out a long sigh, looking up as they continued to walk. âThe former jarl laid a trap meant for Jacob. Eamonn, who had just learned that Jacob is our cousin, overstepped him and took over as Earl, effectively taking the bait. The enemy used that an excuse to burn down the city. Carolina almost died and so did I⌠the last I saw Eamonn, he called me stupid and shit soâŚâ And it still hurt. Slania winced when she repeated the words said to her. âBut⌠Wexford has been rebuilt. He said farewell to my sisters and sent me a letter so thatâs that.â It was clear she wanted to move on from talking about her brother. âI think my sisters mentioned a letter about you during their last visit thoughâŚâ [d]
thedawnbeauty
She rubbed her arms listening to how he changed â He offered to marry me once, it wasnât going to be any sort of real marriage. But a chance to get me out of things my family wanted from me. I couldnât escape my fate, I couldnât escape my mother title, even if she had given it all up. I.. I just canât believe he would be so stupid, so â she rubbed her eyes as the garden trail finally lead into the woods â I suppose I should say all the things that happen, so perhaps you can get a better idea of what went on. My mother, she was good to others, but not good to me.â She began slowly
â I suppose the best thing she ever did was ask your mom if I could stay with her a for while. She was really scared my father was going to find me, and make me like him. Heâs a powerful mage, and he didnât do good thingsâ he murdered a lot of people in golden hornâŚ
I stayed for a long time, a few summers and winters. But when I was sixteen, my cousin Ryan said it would be best if I came home. He had intentions of giving my hand away to a prince named Norbu, and at the time he assigned me two guards, Lexington and Lucaâ she continued to tell the story â your mother knew it was time for me to leave, but wanted to make sure I knew I could always come back. Riley and Fay were like sisters to me, and my aunt Nichola also pressured me into accepting my responsibility.â She rolled her eyes at that â I was supposed to get married but Ryan called it off, said it wasnât a good move for me. He maintained his alliance but he told me, I should remain in the castle until I was needed. I fell in love, with Luca. Who desperately wanted nothing more than to get his home back. You see at the time, the Blackwood werenât allowed in their family home, Ryan was still upholding his uncle decree. But then my brother .. took the throne and everything changed. Luca was given the option, if he left me, his family would be restored. Matthew, my brother hated me. He hated how I treated his wives.â She chucked now, as his wives were insane â Luca took the bait, and gave it to his cousin Michael, and in the end we moved to Wexford and we stayed way out of town, so we didnât.. stay near Jacob snd Carolina, it was complicated. Beside us being linked together, we share a nephew together, and I hated the way the boy worshiped Jacob. So I kept Luca away from everyone and everything he loved. Then .. weâll, then you know, the fire.â She took a deep breathe as she felt she was taking endlessly â I honestly didnât come to see you Riley and Fay after your mother passed because I didnât know how to look them in the eye and show them how much I changed, how much I became this disappointment. I made really, really bad choices. Choices that people will never forgive me for, I literally took a dagger and stabbed Caspian, when I know he was on his way to Katy. I literally killed marcus brother, because I wanted i strength to protect myself. Trust me when I say, Eammon telling you goodbye was decent, and kind. Iâm, an asshole, Iâm jealous ex wife, who having a baby, and freaking out.â (D)
my-sensorium
Slania tilted her head from side to side while her blue eyes held a weary expression. It wasnât the first time someone expressed that type of shock when learning about her brother, and she knew it wouldnât be the last. Now, as she listened, Slania would take occasional swigs from the bottle. She didnât know why Layla had decided to suddenly open up and basically tell her everything that happened to her. She did grimace a little when she mentioned what Nichola had pressured her to do, and she was mid-swig when Layla mentioned her pregnant. She stared at her, lowering her bottle from her lips. âYouâre pregnant? OhâŚâ Well, Layla was certainly in a stressful situation and no doubt the pregnancy made her emotional state more overwhelming. Slania let out a long sigh and surprisingly, she wrapped one arm around Laylaâs shoulders, effectively giving her a rather warm, one armed embrace. She held her there for a while, then pulled away, and continued to walk forward,. As she did, she gave her a shrug. âIt seemed like you needed that, even if you did make irreversible, stupid choices.â She told the woman sincerely.
As they finally walked into the woods, Slania looked ahead, taking a deep breath in. Just around the woods made her feel even more better â more in tune with herself. âListen, I didnât know you. Iâve just started to get to know you, so your absence wasnât something that affected me. As for Riley and Fay⌠motherâs death was really hard on them. Riley cut off her hair in grief and Fay stopped visiting because being in the house without mother was too painful.â She frowned once more. âI think theyâre worried about you but after this whole thing with Eamonn, I donât think they know how to approach you. Or me, for that matter.â [d]
thedawnbeauty
Her shoulders lowered feeling, the warmth of someone hug, something she hasnât experienced in a long time. â No we donât know each other, that was my mistake. But, we can always speak to them together, and maybe they get their years of reasonable anger â one of her bracelets hooked on a few of Slania strands â I didnât even think I could have kids, I made a specific arrangement for this never to happen. But, my father said.. some curses have loop holes.â She turned back hearing something in the distance as she extended her arm across Slania torso â we arenât alone in here.â (D)
my-sensorium
When she pulled away, the strands of hair caught on Laylaâs bracelets were left behind â Slania did have very long hair, after all. The thought of speaking to her older sisters with Layla made her appear to consider the idea. She tilted her head back and forth, thinking about it. âIt would be⌠less awkward if someone else was there,â She told her thoughtfully. As for the curse, she nodded. âIâve heard that. Curses are funny like thatâŚâ She trailed off, also hearing something. She furrowed her brows, looking towards that direction. ââŚHopefully itâs a deer or something.â She mumbled towards Layla, although she suspected that most likely, it was not. [d]
thedawnbeauty
It had felt like time around this was standing still, what seemed like a casual walk on the garden, came to a halt, to the sounds of dozens of footprints crashing there way. At first she thought it was just dealers in the area, but there was no movement in the trees, she immediately thought of her child as protective hands moved to her stomach, and she dared to think maybe, tossing Slania to them first and running could save her skin. â Iâm counting twelves heartbeats coming this way, and they are out for bloo-â she couldnât finish as a man can leaping out of the bushes, forcefully tackling her to the ground- d-
my-sensorium
Slania didn't have her sword. She had left in behind in the room she had shared with Carolina. But, Carolina had now shared it with Jacob, and she, in her exhaustion, hadn't thought to retrieve it when she had the chance. And now, the only thing she had was the small knife in her boot. But, before she could retrieve it, Layla was tackled to the ground. Without thinking twice, she dropped her bottle, and kicked the attacker swiftly on his side. Even tired, a kick from Slania hurt like hell. If it landed true, it may have even cracked a few ribs. Slania then knelt down and took out the small knife from her boot, and looked around. [d]
thedawnbeauty
The attacker went flying, as the crushing sound of ribs cracked followed next. He wore a black mask so his identity was hidden. As Layla sat up â what the fuck.â As she extended her hand. â Donât breathe.â As the man would begin to feel his lungs closed, gasping for air, her eyes turned seeing two men now appear behind Slania â Behind you!â (d)
my-sensorium
Just as Layla began to warn her, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She only had half a second to turn and as she did, she turned the small knife in her hand. The attacker on her right had the unfortunate luck to get stabbed right in the eye by Slaniaâs short blade. As the attacker screamed and she pulled out the blade, that gave the other attacker time to tackle a weary Slania, and that proceeded to knock out the now bloody knife out of her hand. They went down hard, and Slania felt a striking pain on her upper back. She turned her body to try and take the knife, but the man wrapped heir arms around her and tried to pull the other way. Slania proceeded to jab the attackerâs chest with a sudden backward movement by her elbow. The attacker grunted, but didnât let go, so she twisted her arm inward and jabbed again, this time, hitting them right on the gut, causing them to heave and let go. She scrambled to get the knife and as she did, the attacker attempted to strike a second time. Slania suddenly turned in time and impulsively thrusted her small knife forward, getting them on the left side of their gut. There was a painful scream and Slania withdrew her knife, scrambling to her feet. Eyes darted back and forth, trying to think of an escape plan.
In the meantime, she tried to stay close to Layla, keeping an eye out for the pregnant woman as her weary mind tried to process a plan. [d]
thedawnbeauty
Layla watched in horror, as they seemed to be come directly towards Slania, as she wobbled herself back to her feet. Even as the men were screaming in pain, she flinched her wrist, and muttered words underneath her breathe, as they sequential knocked out at once. " We need to head back to the place.' she felt a tug on her hair, as lifted her hands over her head, grabbing the next attack arm, as she flung him over her shoulders, shifting her body to pull on his shoulder, dislocating his arm " Who sent you." she tugged again, as she looked up and saw another men running towards them " look at Slania!" [e]
my-sensorium
It hadnât even occurred to her that they werenât after the silver tongue, the woman connected directly to Carolina Adair, the currently leader of the dealers. All Slania could think was to fend off the attackers, and try to get herself and Layla back to Marcusâs estate. Itâs all her mind could manage to think of. She didnât even want to know why; she just wanted to get back to safety.Â
Laylaâs words made her head turn, and she managed to dodge the attacker by moving backwards quickly to get away from attackerâs reach, but the attacker actually knelt down and managed to make a slash on her upper thigh. It wasnât deep, but it still hurt, prompting her to yelp out in pain. Seeing the attack come at her once again, in desperation, she threw her knife, and it landed right into the attackerâs forehead, causing him fall back. She staggered back as blood began to run down her leg, staining her brown pants. She would have gone to retrieve her knife, but she heard more people closing in quickly.
âWe should make a run for it.â She finally said, realizing that with Layla being pregnant, and she in her sleep deprived, weakened state, it would be too risky to simply fight them all.
The estate wasnât too far, she reasoned. They could make it⌠right? [d]
thedawnbeauty
Suddenly there was a loud roar, almost like thunder was closing in. The attackers she had put to sleep, were waking up and hissing at them, one was even trying to drag himself towards Slania leg. â Blood. Give me the pure blood.â The man hissed, as Layla took a deep breathe â There a hunting lodge nearby, it belonged to my mother, we can make it there. â one by one the leafs began to fall from the tree, until they were bare, thatâs how many footsteps were approaching and coming after them, â We need to go now, this way!â Wrapped one of Slania arms around her neck, to help her way in that direction (d)
my-sensorium
The blood travelled down her leg, but lucky, it didnât drip unto the ground. But still, the attackers screeching for blood perturbed her, especially since she was the one bleeding. Slania didnât like the idea of going even further away from the estate, but with all those attackers, they would either be caught before they even reached the walls of Marcusâs home, or they would bring violence to the weary group insideâŚ
Slania decided to trust Layla. Besides, Slania was keen on making sure she and her unborn child were safe and sound as well. So, with a nod, she followed her, running as fast as she could right behind Layla.[d]
thedawnbeauty
A firm nod, as she pressed her weight against her, as she carried her along side her towards the hunting lodge, which was on the way back towards the manor. She turned back seeing w group of attackers were now right behind them, as she hopped on one leg turning down as she lifted her hand up, watching as three men lifted into the air, as she swung her hand to the side watching as their back slammed into a tree trunk. She was getting tired, and she hadnât used her gift, in a long time. She didnât need to before, as she nodded to Slania it was okay, and continued sprinting towards the lodge, a wooden cabin, with a blue door. Just as they were getting to the steps, she felt a hand on her leg, tugging her back. She was quick to release Slania, pushing her into the lodge step, as she flung back on her side. As an attacker crawled ontop of her, hands moving to her throat, squeezing it (d)
my-sensorium
Now, the magic use by Layla didnât surprise her too much. She had done a mini quick course on the supernatural a while back. But still, Laylaâs magical maneuvering garnered a look of surprise from the redhead. But seeing the woman get tired did concern her. However, they had to press on.
Seeing the cabin made her feel relief. But just as they almost reached it, she was pushed in. Slania didnât even think twice to head back outside. That was the soldier in her; sheâd be damned if anyone was left behind. She rushed at the attacker, and landed a punch right on the side of their head. Now, Slania wasnât a swift as Layla or the other dealers. She wasnât graceful in her movements like Eamonn or Fay were in battle. But, her kicks, punches and swings, when contact was made, were incredibly powerful. Her fist handed right on the attackerâs ear, leaving them to stagger to the side, and once they did, Slania delivered a heavy kick to the side of his head, which knocked the poor soul right out.
âAre you alright?â She asked Layla, pulling her up to her feet. Slania didnât have to turn around to know that the others were just a few steps away, so she told Layla: âGo inside!â [d]
thedawnbeauty
Her cheeks flustered red, as he squeezing watching Slania begin to attack him, with each smack to his ear he released his squeeze against her neck, the full kick to his rib cage staggered him to the side â You canât hide from us forever, we smell you, just as the one beforeâ Layla watched in horror as Slania helped her back up to her feet. â we both go inside together!â She took a hold of her arm â once we step foot inside, they canât touch us. â she gave a face not knowing why it would work, but only it would. As she moved slowly with Slania up the lodge steps, as she kicked open the door. â Dad..â she called out, as sitting at the table, sipping his tea, and older man stood, eyeing the pair. â Layla, get my kit, your friend is injured.â He ordered, as Layla nodded (d)
my-sensorium
Slania went right to the windows, looking out. She was on high alert, and being in a âsafeâ cabin would not settle her down. She was so distracted, she didnât even greet the man Layla had called her father.
But, as she had a chance to stop and think, a thought disturbed her. It made her head hurt and she winced, holding the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger. But, once Layla returned with the kit, she turned around. She didnât look panicked, and she actually didnât feel it, much to her surprise. She was sure she would have entered a panic, especially after the lack of sleep and night terrors from many nights prior. Something was holding her panic back, but she didnât know exactly what it was. But, Slania still looked rather perturbed. The blood stain on her trousers was darker that before, but the blood had begun to slow down.. ââŚWhose blood where they talking about, Layla?â She asked quietly, âWere they after us or⌠am I the one they were truly targeting?â [D]
thedawnbeauty
The older man moved back to the fireplace he didnât want to be in the way of things, especially since he was a fugitive and his daughter asked to stay in hiding. He carefully handed the kit over to Layla to complete the work â Check for infections, and put a drop of her blood in the fire, so we can test it.â Layla nodded back to her father and moved quickly to Slania side â Itâs going to be okay, I promise.â She pulled out a clean cloth dapping it gently â Green or red?â She asked back to her father â as he leaned over to see the blood was slowing down â red, she can heal quicker with itâ as Layla nodded again pressing a cloth against a red mixer potion â this wonât sting, but it will help you healer father, my father is a mage.â She explained as the red potion was slow, but would slowly help develops a scar, as Slania asked her questions, Layla knew it would be good to withhold information â Those men were stripped of their abilities, and when something special is nearby, they crave for it, my blood is useless them, but eyes however, if plucked could be useful, its where my talents rest. So, I think they were after you..â (d)

Now, perhaps to the surprise of the Creeds, the wound didnât seem to heal quickly. Despite the potion, the wound only slow down her bleeding a little more, but that was all it did. Slania simply shrugged. ââŚThat happens.â She flatly told Layla and her father. Keiran Riley, an angel, had tried to heal her when she was severally injured during the fires of Wexford, and it didnât work. That was why Keiran had to resort to more drastic measures to keep her alive⌠When Keiran told her about it, that was when she began to realize that her body was resistant to certain magic. So, the potion not working as effectively as it should have didnât seem to surprise her. âThank you anyway. I appreciate the effort.â Slania added, and while her tone remained flat, she meant it.
Now, Layla did not need to withhold anything, because Slania already figured out they were after her. All she wanted was Layla to confirm it. ââŚThat Morgan woman mentioned my blood. Itâs because of my mother, isnât it?â
After many years of suppressing things, something in Slania seemed snap. She balled her hand into a fist so tightly that her palm turned white. âIâve done nothing but try to stay in the background, but people still go after me⌠first, because of my father. Then, it was because of Eamonn. And now ⌠itâs because of my mother and her stupid decision to kill Gwen Blaine.â She spoke quietly, but something was off. When Slaniaâs eyes met Layla, she would be able to see it: growing rage.
Slania walked to the fireplace. She took the heavy fireplace poker, turned to walk to the door. âWe should split up, Layla. You can stay here, with your father. You are connected to Carolina, the soulmate of my cousinâs. Youâre beloved by my sisters, despite all these years. So, your safety is a priority now to me."

Creed remained quiet, years of pent up frustration was something he could understand, so he kept his eyes lowered on the ground while the girls spoke.
Layla was taken back when the red potion didnât work like it should have, she wanted to immediately grab the green one, but when Slania said -that happens.- she was confused.
She remembered being hunted and bring the object of Morgan desires, and it was scary, but when she mentioned her mother, she stood up, â It could be, your mother was really special like you.â She listened as Slania talked, but her eyes grew anger â That was not a stupid decision, that saved thousands of lives.. she was kind and always helped people like you..â she watched as her take the poker stick and move towards the door. â oh Slania.. â she looked back to her father, who nodded he would be fine if she left
â you are important and special, I havenât seen in your sisters in so long, I doubt I am beloved. I am cursed to your cousin soulmate by a witch, and he is a murder.â She canted her head to the side. â I can get you back to the manor, dad be useful and put one of those spells on us, so they canât see us, so I can make sure she gets back.â She even moved to reach out and take hold of Slania hand â I know I donât have the right words, and I know youâre tired, let me get you back to the manor, make sure you get there safe.â ( d)

ââŚShe didnât tell my father.â Slania finally said about bouts of silence. âShe went to battle with that woman, and my father didnât know. He found out after it was all over, when she herself was at the verge of death. My father was beyond distraught. He was inconsolable. So, she made him a promise, and that promise would seal their fates.â Her eyes meant Laylaâs. âTheir mistakes would eventually cost them their lives.â
Slania looked down at the fire poker. Her head was throbbing at that point, but adrenaline was beginning to rush through her body, fueled by her growing fury. As a result, she was able to ignore the sharp headache. In fact, she no longer felt tired, or drained.
âPerhaps itâs a good thing you never returned. Mother would have wanted you to remember the Deirdre you left behind in Wexford. It was the happiest she ever was. You and my siblings share that. So donât ever take those memories for granted. Don't do what Eamonn did.â
She then shook her head at Laylaâs idea. âI donât think it would work well on me. I can not risk you or your future getting into harmâs way because of me.â Slania meant her baby, of course. She didnât want to say it outright in case her father didnât know yet. Then, she then turned towards Laylaâs father, âThank you, sir, for your brief hospitality. I am truly grateful.â
Steps carried her to the door. She paused, and turned around. âIâll meet you at the manor. Do not worry, I donât mean to play a martyr. I want to survive. I want to live. I wonât allow Keiranâs efforts to be in vainâŚâ
She trailed off, tilting her head. That last part was clearly not meant to be said out loud. But, rather than explain what she meant, she finally opened the door. âI am a seasoned warrior. I have to show these creatures what happens when you threaten a warrior. This is what Iâm good at.â
With that, Slania ran out, into the depth of the woods. The Creeds would hear movements and rustling after her. Then, it all went still. [d]
