Day 1 / July 8, 2014 / Watts Creek
Spotted some Goldfish on Day 1 in Watts Creek, which are an invasive species as they compete with native fish and carry diseases that can harm fish populations.Β
Watts Creek is a small, urban tributary of the Ottawa River in Kanata. It runs from Angus Street to Shirley Bay at the Department of National Defense Rifle Range. The creek flows through urban development and developed land owned by the Department of National Defense and Communications Research Centre Canada. Water runoff from residential, commercial and high tech areas is the main concern on this tributary. Over the years, the creek became more turbid as the water flow decreased.

E-Fishing / July 4, 2014 / Huntley Creek
E-fishing (or electrofishing) is a way of capturing fish with a controlled use of electricity to stun/shock them. After being identified and measured, fish are released alive back into the watercourse. It's an accepted method of sample collection for scientific purposes.
Due to safety concerns for the crew and the wildlife, crew members must go through a standardized training program and be certified to use the equipment.

Huntley Creek 'City Stream Watch' Summary
In total, we got 10km of the stream assessed, collecting data such as water chemistry, stream widths and depth, presence of wildlife, potential stewardship opportunities, riparian vegetation community, instream substrate, bank erosion, etc.

Day 14 / July 4, 2014 / Huntley Creek
This was the final day in the span of 2 weeks time walking Huntley Creek. We noticed rip rap along the shoreline and manmade weir.

Packed and ready to head out we see a huge water bug in the creek, photo op ensued.

Very hot July day! The banks of the creek contained exposed roots from surrounding trees and lots of ferns.
