Friendly reminder to anyone in the Star Trek fandom
Leslie Fish is an important person in fandom history, and has written both fanfiction and filk, and thatβs great. But sheβs also super Islamophobic:
Thereβs nothing wrong with enjoying her work or respecting what she did in the history of the Star Trek fandom, but please also acknowledge that she is still an Islamophobic old woman, and says strange and awful things about Muslims.
(Sheβs also against gun control but posts a bunch ofΒ βsave the animalsβ stuff, which is weirdly hypocritical, but whatever, thatβs for a different post.)
Edit: Thereβs been some confusion, so to clarify that comment about her anti-gun-control stance, this is what I mean:
Her friends on facebook have come to her sayingΒ βBut look at all of these deaths, even accidentalΒ deaths, that could have been prevented by better control!β and she does not care. However, sheβs all about saving animals.
Basically, if you care more about animal lives than human ones, youβre a jerk.
Still feeling some type of way about Leslie Fish passing away. Somehow she was such a funny and intelligent and talented woman, producing wonderful music that I enjoyed for years.
On the other hand, once I discovered her politics the music felt somewhat soured, and anti-government songs ceased to sound like they were for the good of the people, but more for the good of the 'good' people. Especially as a trans man (who is also fan of Alexander James Adams), I couldn't listen anymore for a while.
Now that she's gone I am rediscovering her music. And it feels bad that it sounds better now that she's no longer attached to it. That's also the point. The music is good, it's raw, it scratches an itch. And now I can do that without the fear of directly supporting someone directly opposing me

There's also the additional aspect that if luxuries are what's expensive, you can choose to go without and then you don't have to make so much money. You can choose to work part-time, or seasonally, or one person can provide for a group, if living is cheap and you don't need luxury. But if being alive is expensive, you have no choice but to work a lot, regardless of how frugal your lifestyle is. And then you may as well buy yourself the latest gadget to cheer yourself up after another annoying week at work, because it costs barely anything anyway.
Exactly this. Basic necessities are priced like luxuries.
Everything else is just sugar water.
I do not agree with veganism as a moral standard. If it is your personal moral stance, that is fine. If you think humans eating meat is inherently immoral, I donβt want to deal with you, youβre hopeless. Vegan ideology behaves more like a sect of evangelical Christianity than a dietary choice.
Veganism is better for the environment, but claiming that it's a morally superior choice ignores cultural and economic factors that make people eat animal products.
It is not inherently better for the environment. That is the thing. When you begin trying to explain that local, sustainably sourced animal protein is better for the environment than imported plant proteins that are farmed 3,500 miles away using slave labor, they start tuning you out. Down is better for the environment than polyester stuffing, leather is better for the environment than pleather. We should work on making animal agricultural practices more sustainable instead of trying to shame everyone into eating plant products that are also farmed unethically and unsustainably.
