While the film received mostly positive reviews, it failed to find an audience at the box office. It was nominated for 3 Academy Awards - Michael Lerner for Best Supporting Actor; Dennis Gassner and Nancy Haigh for Best Art Direction; and Richard Hornung for Best Costume Design - but did not receive an Oscar.
