Hey girl! I just got an amazing idea(?) for a Nyx Ulric/Reader fic!!! Can you write one where instead of Nyx dying because of the Ring of Lucii, you fought and bargained with the spirits of the late kings and managed to make a deal. Instead of taking his soul as payment, the spirits will take half the life-span from both of you as a payment for one soul. Since you know, soulmates are said to originally have one single soul split in two. What do you think?? ~Regan
A/N: haha, I twisty twist a little bit, but I like this idea! Let me know what you think.
âWait. I have seen what these brave souls are prepared to do.â
Your heart clenched as the voice of the late King Regis echoed around youâwithin you. Nyx looked at you as if to confirm if you had heard him too. He was a grand king who had sacrificed much to keep his son safe and your heart clenched to hear him speak again.
âThey, too seek to safeguard the future.â
Nyxâs hand curled tightly around yours, the band of the Ring of Lucii burned into your flesh. You hated that you hadnât been quick enough to stop him from slipping the ring on, but you understood the call and desperation of duty. You werenât sure why you could see the Kings as Nyx could, but you werenât going question it now.
One of the Old Kings huffed. âOur boon does not come cheap, young warriors. The cost is a lifeâhis or hers.â
The images of Libertus and Lunafreya appeared before the both of you. The logical choice would have been to sacrifice Libertusâ life, but he was like a brother. Lunafreya was the future, her life couldnât be a choice. Nyx shook his head and the two of you answered at the same time, âNo.â
The Old King grew impatient with your indecisiveness and scowled. âBurn.â
Nyx howled as his hand was set on fire, shaking your hand free so you wouldnât be hurt too.
âStopâstop it!â You turned to the King and screamed. âYou wonât defend the future and youâll kill those who want toâwhat kind of Kings are you?!â There had to be a way to stop all of this. A sacrifice, there had to be a sacrifice. You didnât want Libertus or Lunafreya to die. There was no way you could let the love of your life sacrifice his and you knew that was what Nyx was thinking.
You felt him clutch at the tails of your Kingsglaive coat. Needless to say, he knew what you were thinking too. âNo. I know what youâre thinking and you wonât be the sacrifice.â He ground out, âMy life means nothingââ
âYou asshole, your life is everything to me!â Despite everything that was happening, you turned to punch him in the arm. It was a reactive thing, something you did all the time when Nyx said things you didnât like. âMy life is nothing if youâre not in it.â
A bell-like laugh rang around you. âSuch devotion.â Another of the Old Kingâs spoke. âMy, itâs not oft you see such a thing.â She sounded less supportive and kind and more amused. She was not empathetic to your situation, but found it funny. âI know, we should test the strength of your devotion.â
You werenât keen to play a game with any of the powerful beings because you knew that youâd lose in the end, but you were desperate. âHow?â
âIf your life is nothing without the one who currently bears the Ring, then use your beautiful memories of him to give it power. That shall be your sacrifice.â The Old King announced gleefully. âYes!â
âNo!â Nyx pulled at your shoulder so youâd face him. He ignored the searing pain of his burning hand, the creeping flames slowly moving up his arms. âNoâno, you wonâtâyou canâtâtake my memories instead! Iâm the one with the Ring!â
âSilence!â The flames suddenly burst and burned brighter, stronger and much faster. Nyx howled in pain and in anger. âI have offered them the dealânot you.â The Old King hissed. âChoose.â
âYou canât. I wonât use you like this.â Nyxâs words sounded weak. âI promised I wouldnât hurt youâyou made me promise. I wonâtââ If both of you survived, what then? If you had no memory of him, how could the two of you go on? There wouldnât be anything between youâthere wouldnât be an âusâ.Â
âDonât be stupid.â In the split second between making up your mind and standing to accept the Old Kingâs deal, your mind raced with memories of you and Nyx. The times you were happy, the times you fought, the moment the two of you confessed, your first clumsy kiss. Everything. There wasnât anything you regretted when it came to your relationship with Nyx.
Nyx watched your mouth move in acceptance of the deal and his heart broke. You turned to smile and say something to him, just as time began to move and power flooded his being.
âHe has until dawn breaks, but only darkness awaits you.â The Old King cackled.
You were dazed as you woke. You felt like you were floating or maybe things didnât feel real. Nothing hurt. The room was bright and smelled clean or floral or something. You blinked as you took in the sight of the ceiling. You turned your head slowly to see the curtains of the window gently shifting with the cool breeze. There were flowers in your room, brightly coloured ones. They looked pretty.
You shifted to sit up in your bed, confused as to what to think. You couldnât really think. It was like your mind was hollow, you reached and grabbed at thin air in a room that you knew was meant to have things in it. You touched some things, your name, your ageâbut everything else was fuzzy.
The door to your room rattled gently as the handle was slowly turned. Something inside of you jumped and said to prepare. Prepare for what? Also, how? You clutched tightly at your bed sheets and eyed the vase beside your bed. You could throw it if you had to? Maybe. The door opened and you subconsciously held your breath.
âOhâyouâre awake!â The man who entered looked amazed to see you sitting up. He took some quick strides towards you, but when you shrunk back as if wanting to get away, he stopped. His face fell and he closed his eyes for a moment, shaking his head. âRight.â
âWho are you?â You asked carefully. âWhere am I?â
It hurt Nyx to hear you ask those questions, the former in particular. He had foolishly hoped that maybe something of your memory of him would have stayed, but the Old Kings really had taken everything from you. âIâm Nyx. Weâre in Lestallum.â He carefully approached the chair next to your bed and slowly sat down.
He was watching you very carefully, which made you feel slightly uneasy. At least that was what you thought you were feeling. Your stomach twistedâflutteredâslightly. âNyx.â You repeated his name slowly. Your mouth opened and closed because you felt like there was another name after that, but you didnât know what it was. âNyx.â The second time you said it, it felt a bit better than the first.
You offered your name and Nyx smiled. It made you feel even more strange. He was handsome, with broad shoulders, strong stubbled jaw and pale blue eyes. Your eyes lingered on the markings on his faceâmaybe a little too long.
Nyx grinned. âSomethinâ on my face?â He ran his hand along his mouth and jaw as if to wipe away any debris. His grin made you blush and you looked away with a mumbled âsorryâ. âItâs alright.â He wanted to say something flirtatious but thought better of it because of your current state. âIâm glad youâre awake. Youâre not hurtinâ or anything?â
âNo.â You wrinkled your nose. âI donâtâthink so?â You couldnât describe how you were feeling. Like you knew something was missing, but nothing was. How you were hollow in a way, but definitely not. Some weird contradiction.
âThatâs good.â Nyx chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck, not really knowing how to continue a conversation with you. It had been such a long, long time since the first time you had met and he couldnât remember it clearly. Had it always been so awkward trying to talk? âIâll uhâleave you to rest a bit longer.â
A small bout of panic rose in you as he got up to leave. You werenât sure where it came from or why you were suddenly worried about this stranger leaving, but you couldnât stop yourself as you called out. âNyx.â His hand was on the door, ready to go, but he turned back to you. âWill you come back to visit? Please?â
He seemed surprised with a question, but then gave you a brilliant smileâand a wink, which made you blush again. âYou got it. Iâll be back later.â
Alone again, your worried hands tugged at the sheets, not knowing what to do or how to feel. Something was different, but you couldnât remember how.
You turned to smile and say something to him. âYou made me fall in love with you once, what makes you think you canât do it again?â
