when i say i think the writers of weaving a tale of love are doing a better job with the side arc of wu meiniang than the main arc itself, i mean they are doing a phenomenal job
i am literally so intrigued by the portrayal of wu zetian, who isn’t this naive girl that doesn’t want imperial favor but seeks love but is actually quite the sly one because honestly she has to do so for her own betterment.
Take a look at this scene
meiniang is helping out taizong in his study and she glances upon gaozong’s memorial
she is like so what can i do without actually intervening and bringing upon suspicion; throw the book down so his taizong’s attention gets diverted
she does get his attention
and now he wants to read the memorial…she is brilliant
and honestly the part where she talks about how the future gaozong reminds her of her past self when she had just entered the palace who was idealistic and passionate but know she knows that isn’t enough, which is honestly why she feels the need to help him out so that he doesn’t fall out of favor is just so heartwarming
i do like the fact that they made gaozong into a person with an actual brain and spine and didn’t make him into a whiny emotionally unbalanced prince whose infatuation for his concubine mother isn’t healthy.
