Fun Facts about Gulls:

• “Seagull” isn’t actually an official name. Ornithologists just call them gulls, and there’s no species literally named “seagull.” Many gull species don’t even live near the sea.

• They can drink both saltwater and freshwater. They have special glands above their eyes that filter salt out of their bloodstream and excrete it through their nostrils.

• Gulls are incredibly smart. They’ve been observed using bread or other bait to lure fish to the surface, then snatching them up.

• Some gulls stomp their feet in a rhythmic pattern on wet ground or grass to mimic rainfall, tricking earthworms into surfacing.

• They’re highly social and vocal.. different calls mean different things (alarm, territory, begging), and chicks even learn to recognize their parents’ specific call.

• Gulls can live surprisingly long with some species reach 20-30 years in the wild.
