dinah lets out a short, sharplaugh, head shaking as she tucks a stray piece of hair behind her ear. "charming," she deadpans but the amused glint in her eyes betrays how much she's enjoying the banter. "i bet that would do our patient satisfaction scores wonders," she hums, raising an eyebrow at him. "i'm not saying i wouldn't aim for the head though, if no one was looking."
she hums, pen tapping against the top of the nurses station. "he's reigning champ for now, but it's still early."
"see, that’s the spirit. i knew you had a little fight in you," he replied, with a voice filled with amusement . "you go for the head, i’ll be the person who didn’t see a thing. we'll make a great team." there were very few people that evan was willing to work with, and associate himself with. dinah was one of the select few.
he leaned an elbow on the nurses’ station, glancing toward the hallway before looking back at her. "i was gonna say, that's pretty bold of you to assume he’s going to keep the title. i’ve got money on some karen stealing it before the day's over."
tess hums in agreement, laughing a little. "sometimes i think intern year reverts everyone back to being seventeen," she offers with a shrug of her shoulders. "like once they'd had to focus so hard during med school it's like they have to regress back to make up for lost time."
"bold is a word for it." she laughs, shaking her head. "incredulous is another one that comes to mind." she clicks her phone off, tucking it away into the pocket of her scrubs and leaning back into her seat. "is that your way of telling me you didn't?"
malcolm exhaled laughing, before shaking his head, "seventeen’s generous. i’d say some of them are operating on a solid sixteen and a half."
he took another sip of his coffee before answering her second question, the corner of his mouth lifting in that faint, unreadable way of his. "what, the x-ray room?" he asked, feigning offense. "please. i have enough paperwork to haunt me for years, i don’t need hr adding to the pile," that was the worst part of his job. never in a million years did he ever anticipate just how much paperwork he'd have to do as a doctor, "besides, i’m more of an on-call room traditionalist," he added, his voice full of sarcasm "might as well have some privacy if i’m going to ruin my reputation," he would never even think about doing that, but he was more of a rules are meant to be followed type of person. "i never ever did anything that wasn't allowed when i was paying my dues. but i'm kinda curious now if you were you a rebel or not back in the day?"
ghosts from hollis's past are popping up all over the hospital these days but she isn't entirely upset to see henry. their divorce hadn't exactly been easy — is it ever? — but it had been amicable and after getting over the initial shock of it all, they'd managed to stay friends, something that hollis held close to her chest. "right, jerry." a brow quirks up at him, head tilting as she settles into the seat across from him. "technically, if two residents signed off but no meds were ordered, it's on whoever was assigned to the patient last — unless the charge nurse catches it before pharmacy does then it's going to be group effort chaos." her lips quirk upwards, a teasing grin. "so jerry might want to go sweet talk jane before admin finds out. coffee is usually a good peace offering."
"group effort chaos," he echoed, shaking his head as he leaned back in his chair. "my favorite kind. nothing like watching someone try to gaslight the charts into thinking they didn’t screw up." he then paused a moment to take a sip of his coffee which way too hot, resulting in a subtle wince of pain as he put the cup back down, "i guess i should let jerry know to start practicing his apology face. maybe he should even throw in a muffin." the last thing he needed was to really get off on the wrong foot here. even if it was just her aunt. and even then, it's not like he really had pull with jane anyways. he was just her niece's idiot ex at this point, which he always wore proudly.
"i promise i'm not gonna just go to you for these types of things, just still getting used to the chain of order around here and who is who," he announced, just to remind himself as well, "you're just knowledgeable." there was no bark or sarcasm with his tone, just admiration that always sneaks through when he talks to her. "but speaking of, how is it having jane working here?" maybe it was a little too to the point at the moment, but he was unsure how he was going to approach her aunt basically being his boss.
“oh we’re feeling pensive today, are we?” indy asked, snorting as she walked by evan and away from the pathway. “if you stay over there the waiting room’s gunna sense you,” it was one of her more quiet superstitions. the waiting room — the physical place, not the people, though they could be wild in their own right — could hear you. it’s why the q word isn’t allowed near her. you say the shift was quiet? suddenly the waiting room would spit out the weirdest case in the pacific northwest. last week someone came in with a mcdonald’s fryer basket stuck to his — “security might’ve thrown it away,” indy said over her shoulder. “they had to take it away from the ems team.” snorting again, indy dropped the file she had into the post-op pile for night shift.
“well now you gotta tell me what you were gunna say,” she had no more files to sort and the next procedure she had to scrub into wasn’t for another hour, so she pulled herself up to sit on the desktop of the nurses station next to where evan had stopped. “okay so go back,” the nurse said, eyebrows furrowing. “is he just like, really good at insults or did he have an itchy asshole?” and then after a moment of thought. “and were you being annoying?”
"by the time that happens, we'll be done with our shift anyways." not his circus, not his monkeys once he's off duty. at the meniton of the frying basket, he raised a brow, "wow, so much for preserving evidence."
he was about to go on one tangent, but he paused with his mouth open once she asked the billion dollar question, "me? annoying?" he shook his head, as if that wasn't a possible reality. "i’m a delight to be around, even patients think so." not him, he couldn't possibly be annoying.
he then crossed his arms, like an offended child, leaning against one of the desks, "it was definitely because he had an itchy asshole, but i have a feeling he's always that rude." especially when he probably was never humbled. "like me? annoying? i'm a delight to be around." not him, he couldn't possibly be annoying. "the man’s insults were subpar at best. i’ve heard toddlers with stronger material. at least come up with something more original than me being annoying and trying to insult me by telling me about my butt chin. like don't you wish you had one?"

cafeteria, prob when it's not busy
henry's still getting used to this pine valley. each hospital had it's own protocols, and he had a hard time differentiating some of the more specific unused ones. but he was trying his best. and that was the only reason why he was in the break room with the typed out protocols in his hand during his actual break rather than talking an unfortunate coworkers ear off near the nurses station. although upon seeing hollis enter, he knew he wasn't going to get anything done. "look what the old man's broken wind blew in. long time no talk, stranger," he announced with a smile, "i know, i know, who am i right now being all professional," he pointed towards the rules in front of him, "i'm just trying to figure out what the hell happens next since i'm pretty sure i had, i mean this other guy, jerry, had like two residents sign off on one chart, and meds didn't get ordered for the patient, and i have feeling that this is somehow gonna be on nurse jerry. so if you have any idea, i'll definitely pass it along to him.
if i'm honest you look extremely free right now." sam leans back and laces his fingers behind his head. he won't say the unspeakable words, he barely wants to think them. but he would say that he's survived busier nights in the er. "hm. you getting in some milf action tonight? what part of that is supposed to be entertaining for me?" he raises an eyebrow, as if evan forgot that was the whole point.
sam flips his textbook back open. "have fun with your milf, i guess," he dismisses evan, "you know where i am if you want to have real fun."
"if you want me to take my break now, all you have to do is ask." he'd actually be sort of happy to do so to entertain him, not that he'd admit it. and he wouldn't do it without sam asking. his pride was a bit too high for that. "and milf action? wow, sam, do you really think that little of me?" his tone was light, he didn't take offense to it, "for the record, it’s purely professional. i just happen to have excellent bedside manner."
"anything beats doing bullshit notes." he shrugs, giving malcolm a look. he gives the man in a look, brow arching. "i'm fine, dude." cyrus answers simply before adding: "why are you like, tweakin' over the shitty coffee?" malcolm was a friend, but cyrus found that he could be a bit odd. regardless, he appreciated the distraction from having to finish notes, charts, and all of the bullshit in between. "sullivan's not gonna fire the guy in charge of treating cancer. you can chill out."
"tweaking is way more than what i'm doing," he always thought of tweaking as if it meant that he was freaking out a bit, rather than him talking about one of his conspiracy theories. "i’m just trying to figure out why the hospital pretty much keep up with most of the inventory that we need, but but can’t brew a decent cup of coffee."
he leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out beneath the table, the hint of a smile tugging at his mouth. "honestly, i’m not worried about my job," he replied as he shook his head, "i’m worried about what he will do under the guise that it's for the hospital. what is that saying? absolute power corrupts absolutely."

"you catch the seahawks game last night?" he asked, voice low as if he was almost embarrassed of the team, "i swear, every season i tell myself I won’t let them get under my skin, and every season they make me a liar." he shook his head, before he let out a slight frown, "darnold's interception made me almost throw the remote at the damn tv." his tone shifted lighter, "if they keep this up, i might have to start prescribing blood pressure meds for both of us." he was kidding, of course. "sorry, bad joke. last thing i need is sullivan thinking i'd actually do that."
of course malcolm’s enjoying this. watching her attempt to strangle a crash cart is probably the highlight of this fucker’s day — not that he’d ever admit it, but taren’s convinced she can see it in the twitch of his mouth. “fuck off,” she says, tugging a cable back into place. “haven't you heard? restraint is my specialty.” everyone in this hospital knows that’s not even close to true, but she’s trying, goddammit. a few more jerks to the wires leads to absolutely no reprieve and taren groans loudly, cursing under her breath when the monitor keeps shrieking. “fucking do it, dude — i just need it to stop beeping. it’s maddening,” she snaps, throwing her hands up in defeat. maybe it says something about her that she can’t put up with a little beeping without losing her damn mind, but honestly, taren doesn’t really care.
malcolm finally cracked a smile at her. for some reason, taren was one of the few people that could break his stoic-ness when he was working. she just had this certain aura about her that always made him let his guard down.
"restraint," he repeated, his tone filled with amusement. "yeah, okay. and the interns aren't leaving underwear in the x-ray room." he heard about that too. see, he was hip.
his hands moved towards the source of whatever the hell was making that sound, though he had never seen the wires this...entangled before. with a quick flick of a switch, the monitor finally cut off mid-beep.
"there," he said, standing again and offering her a sidelong look that was equal parts smug and good-natured. "no machine casualties will be happening today," he joked, "i’ll be expecting a thank-you card. or at least an apology to the cart." he then glanced at her, putting his hands into his white coat, "is this thing actually what's making you so annoyed right now or is it just a convenient scapegoat right now?" well, he made it sound a little more...deep than he needed to. and he knew that taren had a tendency for this to just kind of happen to her, but he figured he should ask.

the only answer his question gets is a groan, before a grimace. ade enjoyed working with evan, his interest in plastics made him a good student -- and the two seemed to make a good team. except in the moments where ade is reminded that he hasn't learned how to read her mind. "okay, ew." she gives him a look at the mention of the resident in the bathroom, eyes rolling. "i don't ever want to know about when you're going to the bathroom, keller." ade points out, before adding: "and you seriously need to work on your ass kissing. it's like you don't even want in on this surgery."
he let out a little laugh, trying to appear unbothered by her little jab. "got it, no bathroom talk. i’ll save those details for someone who appreciates the full picture," and he was sure that someone around here would. "and for the record, my ass kissing game is strategic. you start too early, it looks desperate. you time it right, you look confident, duh," he explained as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. do really think that i don't know how to ass kiss? because i'm kinda offended at that notion."
tess isn't surprised people are having sex in the hospital. she herself has snuck away to an on call room — or a family bathroom or once a supply closet — with her husband her fair share of times over the years. that concept in itself is nothing new. but the idea of doing it in the x-ray room that's basically public and where there are certainly cameras and the door barely locked. "i don't think it's a prank, but i guess it could be," she shrugged. that would definitely be the preferred option, all things considered. she's never going to touch anything in that room without wiping it down now. "but i think even if it was a prank it was a little stupid, especially right now. sullivan is on a warpath. why would someone put themselves in the line of fire like that?"
"because common sense tends to disappear somewhere between medical school and residency," he was joking of course, but he knew that he was definitely questioning his sanity when he was going through all of that. "and you’d think with sullivan breathing down everyone’s necks, people would keep their clothes on and their heads down, but you know." he shook his head in disappointed, not at her, but rather at everyone else.
"still, i have to admit, it’s bold. stupid, yes, but bold. the kind of bad decision you only make when you’re young enough to think the cameras don’t work and the world won’t catch up to you." he did judge a lot, but who was he to judge when it came to this? "please tell me you didn't do anything that reckless at their age."
dinah snorts, the sound quick and sharp along with the roll of her eyes. "you almost sounded modest there," she hums, raising an eyebrow at him. modest isn't a word she would ever use to describe evan, even sarcastically. she glances towards the hallway where the dramatic patients voice is still echoing, making her roll her eyes for the second time in as many minutes. "he's probably just got gas pains like a fuckin' baby." actually, she has no idea what's wrong with the guy but that's where her money would be. "tempting as punching a patient might sound, i don't really think losin' my job would be in my best interest. not to mention the assault charge."
a smirk spread across his face, tilting his head toward her. "modest?...me? please," he waved her off, though he did appreciate her more than he'd ever actually admit. he hoped that his actions showed that, because his pride was way too high to do that. "maybe we should sneak him some tums, have it magically thrown at him," he joked, though there was definitely a bit of seriousness to his hypothetical plan.
"well, there should be no consequences if they deserve it. it would save all of us a lot of time, and a lot of whining. has he been the worst patient today so far?"

it was one of those days where indira never had a chance to sit. between patients that have been waiting days and the newest checked in for traumas, she’s been basically running to get extra pillows and blankets for the better part of an hour. she had been on her way back to the kitchen to make another food preference request when she saw evan in the hallway. standing there, facing the entrance to the waiting room, where the triage line was getting longer and the day was getting shorter. slowing to a stop beside the resident, indira raised a dark eyebrow at the man, glancing from him to the doorway and back. “please tell me that you’re just staring into space and not witnessing something wild out there.” she joked. “we had to confiscate someone’s fencing sword this morning…no clue how that got past security, but he whipped it out when someone stole his seat…”
if there was a picture next to the definition of dramatic in the dictionary, it would probably be evan. but that wasn't his fault, everyone in his family was like that. and if there was one thing he liked to do, it was sigh while looking on from afar, hoping that someone would notice. at the appearance of indira, he let out yet another sigh before he spoke, "maybe, or maybe i was just hoping you'd notice me," he replied in a teasing tone, "a fencing sword? really? that’s… impressive." people managed to get the weirdest shit in here. "do we know where it is now?" he wasn't sure what he'd do with it, but he sure as hell would like to see it.
"i mean, nothing as wild as that, just had to walk away from a patient, before i said something that i'd regret," he liked to think he had some bit of patience, the hospital could be a scary place for those who didn't really work there, but he also had trouble empathizing with people, so it's a double edged sword. "you really think you see everything and then someone has a fencing sword and another one is calling me more annoying than an itchy asshole."

"sounds like you're having a rough night." sam closes his highlighter around his textbook and holds it up so evan can see the textbook from the night class he's taking. "studying. but i'll take a break for you." finally, a grin cracks. "entertain me, babe."
"a break just for me? wow, i must be special," he replied, with a teasing tone, "do i look like i have enough time give you some free entertainment?" he asked, raising his brow as he spoke, though he did have plenty of free time at the moment. "and you know there's not really much to do around here to entertain, though a patient's mother keeps asking me if i'm free later. i guess we could fuck around with her."

her shift, like many do, started far too early. arriving at four in the morning is nothing new, but each time she finds herself in this position -- it takes longer for her to find any energy. two hours in and she's finished her coffee, though it's had little effect. elbows drop on to the raised counter, hands running over her face; she'll have to make another trip to the coffee cart sooner rather than later. out of the corner of her eye, she spots someone walking up to her, hands still covering her face. with a sigh, she lifts her head to find evan. "please tell me you have a latte with you. i'm dying here." a brow arches as she turns to him, before adding: "or that you're as exhausted as i am. misery loves company. i'll accept either."
he didn't mind getting up early. in fact, he sometimes enjoyed having an early shift versus one where he'd be just looking at the time and feeling like he couldn't do anything all day. he leaned against the counter as adrienne spoke, shaking his head at her, "late night?" he asked, though he wasn't particularly interested in her answer. "a latte's gonna have me running to the bathroom all day, so no i don't," he was only partially joking about the bathroom thing, "but i am as exhausted as you are, though i like to think i make misery look good." only because he did think he made everything look good. "so, does that count, or do i need to start practicing my dramatic sighs for full effect?" he quipped, as a smirk appeared on his face.
"you need to check the group chat more often," she hums, shooting him an almost playful look. she snorts, unable to stop herself, when he talks about the youths of the hospital. "what are you like, ninety?" the interns do seem to be getting younger and younger looking every year though or maybe that's just her getting older. she pulls her phone out, scrolls back in the group chat to show him the picture that had been sent — black lacy underwear in the x-ray room. "one of the interns found them. i guess it goes without saying that the implication is someone was fooling around in there."
"in my defense, i just got rid of my flip phone. so maybe i'm just ninety-one." he'd rather just have a pager for everything if he could. he lifted his brows in amusement as he looked at the picture. "alright, i think i could've done without the visual." god he wished that he could go back in time to five seconds ago. "and to think that i thought the biggest danger in that room was the radiation." and how he wished it was. "do we think it's a prank? i can't imagine someone being dumb enough to try and do this."
