every time i watch some piece of media about how abused children need to put in the work to understand their poor put upon parents i think about the scene in the asoue netflix show where klaus is told his shitty boss had a terrible childhood and says "i'm having a very terrible childhood right now". like damn gottem pack it up we can stop doing this narrative in film and literature now

Ughh but you have to UNDERSTAND people in order to change the culture. Yeah my parents fucked me up bad and are still pretty rancid people to varying degrees on a personal and sociopolitical level, but if you want people like that to stop existing then you have to understand the context that made them that way. I can identify a million interwoven reasons that my parents are the way they are and treated me the way they did, and it’s so much bigger than “they had a bad childhood.” If you can’t understand your parents within the sociopolitical and socioeconomic and cultural framework that they grew up in (aka that they lived their most formative years in), then we will never move the needle in changing those narratives to prevent people from becoming like our parents

There are millions of people just like your parents because they all had similar experiences. If we want to change who people become, we have to change the experiences people have

On days like this you’ve gotta focus on harm reduction rather than trying to force a good day. Stretch a little bit. Watch an interesting video. Do a chore while watching a comfort show. Work slowly and take breaks often. Savor every drop of your coffee.
