eTextile Summer Camp 2015 - “Geek out!”

Between July 26th to August 2nd, 2015, for the third year in a row, Paillard Center d’Art Contemporain & Residencies d’ Artistes opens its doors to artists, hackers, educators, designers, makers, and researchers from around the globe.

One week each year, this 18th Century paper mill, now repurposed to host international contemporary art and performance, brings together expert practitioners in the fields of electronic textiles and soft circuitry to work together, exchange knowledge, share skills through hands-on workshops and engage in discourse around current topics. This year was the fourth edition of the eTextile summer camp, and the second time EJTech has been invited to attend.

Liquid Midi by EJTech

The last time we wrote about Hungarian textile innovation lab EJTech, formed by MOME Alumni Eszter Judit Kárpáti and Esteban de la Torre was when they won a first prize of the Frankfurt-based Techtextil 2015. Now we proudly present their newest work, a musical interface using screenprinted conductive ink, the first pilots of which were realized with the support of Bare Conductive.

Techtextil 2015: 1st Prize for Chromosonic!

Hungarian textile innovation laboratory EJTech won the first prize of the “Textile Structures for New Building” competition by Frankfurt am Main-based Techtextil 2015. The winning work, Chromosonic is based on a 2013 graduation project by MOME alumna Eszter Judit Kárpáti, who since than formed EJTech with partner Esteban de la Torre. We asked the two designers to give an overview on their experiences.

Techtextil and Texprocess 2015 have proven to be the undisputed epicentre for innovation in high-tech fabrics, smart textiles, new materials and processing technologies. Over 1400 exhibitors from 48 countries presented their innovations to the 29,000 visitors over the span of 4 days in Messe Frankfurt. Techtextil, focused on the today and tomorrow of technical textiles and revealed such integrated technologies are really peaking. The serious wealth of innovative products set out to boost fields such as aerospace industry, medicine, automaking, wearables and particularly the architecture segments is stunning. It is segmented into twelve areas: Agrotech, Buildtech, Clothtech, Geotech, Hometech, Indutech, Medtech, Mobiltech, Oekotech, Packtech, Protech and Sporttech. A definite highlight was the yarns, threads, and other conductive fabrics designed to transmit data and electricity, ever engaging, with stronger momentum than ever for future trends and visions.

From a wearable speaker to a screen-printed soundboard, EJTech is changing the way we experience music in the physical world.

Textilhackek az EJTech Laborban

Kárpáti Judit Eszter és Esteban de la Torre a MOME egykori hallgatói. Judit továbbfejlesztett 2013-as MA-diplomamunkája, a Chromosonic itthon és külföldön is komoly visszhangot váltott ki; momentán ember és textil interakciójának új lehetőségeit kutatja a MOME Doktori Iskolájában. Esteban az osztatlan képzés utolsó évfolyamának hallgatójaként animációt tanult, de az utolsó félévben Mexikóba költözött; audiovizuális médiával, elektronikával, hackeléssel, kódolással foglalkozik. Ma mindketten Budapesten élnek és dolgoznak, a közösen alapított EJTech laborban. A labor tevékenységéről és fontos projektjeikről is kaptunk tőlük ismertetőt.

Az EJTech egy experimentális art&tech labor, Esteban de la Torre és Kárpáti Judit Eszter kollaborációja. Kísérleti interfészek, e-textilek, interaktív installációk útján térképezzük fel az ember és a technológia interakciójának új módjait, így alkotva szinergiákat a digitális és a fizikai világ között.

Chromosonic Pattern Test by EJTech

CHROMOSONIC is an e-textile fabric that changes color, using an Arduino. Silkscreen covers the dye, that changes with temperature. Sound makes the nichrome wires woven into the fabric heat up, changing the pattern.

It’s made by EJTech, an experimental art&tech lab based in Budapest, Hungary founded by Esteban de la Torre (MEX) and Judit Eszter Karpati (HUN).
