To the theories of Demogorgons being some sort of evolutionary phase of (dead) people:
This is the flower of the Corpse Lily, a parasite plant on vines that stinks of rotting meat. It lives completely hidden inside its host vine until it blooms and drains it of its nutrients. It doesn't need sun.

"It all just accrued like a snowball rolling down a hill, until it was obvious. Let's say the snowball became an avalanche."
The next snow ball = giving small signs that you like someone is happening while Mike and Will are walking down a hill. Where it became obvious: this is arguably the first time they are flirting in a way the audience has to understand.
The avalanche happened here. It was too much. From here on, whoever is influencing the story distorts it more and more from volume to volume. At the end, Mike doesn't even touch Will.
Something something S5 getting weirder and weirder with the volume increasing (volumes 1 to 3), the Duffers wanting to block out noise interfering with writing their story, radio transmission, TV static, ...
This might fit with the theories that there's an in-universe reason for all the 80s references after all, meaning that 80s media has influenced the current distorted story we are seeing somehow. Whether that's Mike and Will making it up as writer and painter and/or it's Brenner editing tapes and memories in some way, I don't know. But ST copied so much from The Thing, it's frankly ridiculous.
But let's start with the most significant scene that introduces The Thing, already in the context of remakes.
Look also how when Lucas says "the original is a classic" we see Mike and Will. The og story?
Mr Clarke also explains to his girlfriend how the special effects are made and we see the poster in Mike's basement. Three times to be exact placed in ST.
This is just to say they want us to refer to The Thing and notice the similarities. And boy, there are so many, it's crazy. Funnily enough: The Thing -> Stranger Things even works for the title!
Photos below the cut, the aliens are truly horrendous, be warned. ST has the watered down versions of them!
And yeah, sometimes all monsters in all movies look the same, but the level of similarities here, even in the lighting and framing, is something else.
The Demogorgon
Flayed open, deep red flowery face
In Tales from '84 there's also now monsters with a thing (lol) coming from inside the head
Long, thin limbs, grey skin
No face, slimy skin, even the forehead lines
These are from the 2011 prequel
Vecna
Red fleshy wiry body
Hanging on vines
The claws look literally like the mind layer
Spider
This even has the same yellow lighting
Flayed
This is literally the same shot lol, from hair to facial impression and the leg/arm on the right side
Vines
Dog
Not visual this time, but we first see the alien in The Thing exploding out of a dog it had inhabited. When we see the demogorgon for the first time in ST, this is also the first and only time we see the Byers' dog.
Maybe whoever is building the illusion (Mike, Will) or editing memories (Brenner) (or whatever tf is happening) the monsters look like this because they are (unconsciously) basing them on the movie. The white lines in the VHS tapes also turn up in the demo scenes, suggesting that something messed with them.
Interestingly, there's no blueprint for the mind flayer that I've noticed.

Mike was gonna become a brick in the wall since S1, and it was always connected to him conforming in his relationship with El.
We NOW know from S5:
At the end of the song, a man shouts:
If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding!
This is obviously a metaphor for conforming: enduring your unpleasant duties first, do what's enforced and expected of you (eating meat, the proper food), only then being allowed something you actually enjoy: freedom and joy (the dessert).
In the finale of S1, Lucas and Dustin are quite excited to find loads of pudding:
Mike doesn't seem so interested:
El seems intrigued but doesn't know what pudding is (this is so sad: she doesn't know joy, only her duties):
Mike explains:
El also wants to eat Eggos, but Mike says no, eat real food:
Eat your meat!
This is where ST first uses this metaphor and it's right before Mike kisses El for the first time. I don't need to explain that that kiss does not look enjoyable, that Mike surprises her with it and she asks him if he's like her brother right before.
Then again in S3, during Mike's first attempted love confession to El, they sit in front of this sign:
Mike tries again to perform his expected obligation to reconcile with her after the break up to become her boyfriend again, and isn't successful this time or any other time really telling El that he loves her.
So this metaphor has been connected to Mike from S1 and specifically to Mike and El and the quintessential hallmarks of romance (first kiss and first love confession), being an unpleasant obligation enforced on them by an oppressive and authoritarian system.
@nightnut that's an honest-to-god bunk bed in Mike's room for no reason, yeah :D The Wheeler house seems big enough that Holly and Mike never had to share but oh well!
Chat are we thinking this was an intentional misdirect or we'll still get this scene? I mean obviously memories are jumbled up and everything but methinks we might spend more time with Mike in his Camazotz and realize with him that something is wrong?? Oh the possibilities

ST came out in 8 releases, so maybe that'll be the number of tapes: S1, S2, S3, two S4 volumes, three S5 volumes. 8 = illusion and infinite loop. It kinda makes sense how they split S5 so that it was obvious how much worse each volume got. I was joking that the S5 tapes will only be static but maybe only the S5 finale tape will be static.
And then?
Vance Goodman: "Turn this one up to - yes - eleven. Really, turn it up to eleven!"
If they release a tape every two weeks, the S5 finale tape is out about two weeks before November 6.

So much of the subtext and theories is based on these tiny little details in the corner of a shot and yet with the VHS tapes a significant portion of the image is erased:
