runnin' on empty

“Well, it’s not like it’s going anywhere, but the sun might be soon enough. I reckon it’ll be better to check it out in the day time, and waiting seems pointless. I’ve been in a maze a few times, yes, but certainly not enough to call myself an expert. That’s okay, it’s part of the fun! Come on, it’s this way,” she motioned, pulling out her map.

“That was a lot of thought process for a maze, but I like it. I think we’ll be okay, since it’s summer and the sun usually sets a bit later than normal. Besides, maybe this one won’t even be that hard.” He started following her. “So, where are you from?”

“That’s true, you make a good point,” she giggled. “Yes! Oh, I couldn’t believe it, really. It’s gorgeous, but you’ll have to see it for yourself to appreciate it. For research purposes, yes. Then I could add it to my map! See, I met another boy here, and when we went exploring, we made maps of the things we found. They’ll come in handy, until we know our way around, I should think. But yes, I think it sounds like a splendid idea. Let’s go, if you’re not busy.”

“That’s a really good idea, actually. I wouldn’t have thought about that. I’m not busy at all, and I can’t really miss out on seeing the maze. Have you ever been through one before? Every few years we would have a fair and there would be a maze, usually. I’m not the greatest at figuring them out, I’m afraid.”

“Thank you. I agree, most definitely, being kind is rewarding in its own right. I’ve found the kitchens, thankfully. I love to cook, so that was on my priority list. And of course the dining halls are not far from there, but I’ve seen the gardens! They have such beautiful flowers here, and a maze, too. I haven’t gotten to see that yet, but I’d like to! And I know where the music room is, though I haven’t been. Someone mentioned it to me.”

“I think everyone’s first priority is usually the kitchens, isn’t it?” He laughed. “There’s a garden here? And a maze? Even our garden back home doesn’t have a maze. We should go check it out, for research purposes of course. And also because it sounds like fun.”

“I think you might be too kind for the sake of others, though I should hope so, myself, that people wouldn’t mind. It’s a pleasure to meet you too. Especially since you haven’t run from my voice. Have you just arrived recently as well?”

“Really? Am I? I hope that’s not a bad thing. I mean— Anyway, I have just arrived recently. It’s not too bad of an adjustment, don’t you think? Or, maybe you’re not also royalty...I don’t mean to presume, or anything.”

“Good, I always forget that other people might not want to listen, but I’m glad it didn’t bother you. I’m Annalise, by the way.”

“No, I can’t imagine that happening. I mean, that people wouldn’t want to listen. It’s nice to meet you, Annalise. I’m Darcy.”

“Oh… I wasn’t being too loud, was I? The echos here are truly remarkable, I’ll have to remember that the next time I’m humming.”

“No...No, you weren’t being too loud. I guess sound just travels, but if you were being too loud that wouldn’t really bother anyone I don’t think.”

“I was hoping that they would be in a logical place…the first floor, maybe towards the middle of the palace? I’m sorry. Is there a map anywhere?” 

“One would think so... I don’t think there’s any map around here. I suppose we should make our way around towards the right side of the palace and check there first. It can’t elude us forever.”
