he's quick to scoff. quick to dismiss. autographs and handwriting: what's next? a wad of his spit? "aren't you aiming high, queenie.." this time it's thinner than his usual bite. less teeth, more lip than anything. it's a drawn foul that bender likes to play to hurt his own ego. a quick reminder to those all around that he's not quite as high up on people's mental lists as they may think. he's everywhere but where he wants to be, existing in perspectives that don't do him any justice except for getting him some extra breathing room. like airing out the news of a contagious parasite. benders eyes linger distantly on the space between them against the table. chrissy's notebook still blurs the border separating them, acting as a shitty bridge he still won't cross. john knows he belongs beneath it. that doesn't mean he's ignorant to the way her hand taps on his arm. it's playful. it's so playful he stares at her. "you're already in trouble. chrissy cunningham. i had nothing to do with that." he throws it right back, a little grin to go with it. maybe he's pissed she's lobbing the concepts of trouble and himself together, maybe he finds it amusing. it's a change up. it's not new and it's not old. john knows better than to let it roll of his back without a little note specifying that he, for once, had nothing to do with this person's consequences. hands washed with it it now, and hands will be washed of it by the end of the day.
his mouth flexes itself into something sharper, more familiar in the way it fits him better. he doesn't know what to call his amusement in figuring people out and sticking a gritty, shitty label on them. interest, maybe. chrissy cunningham is creeping right into the plague-zone and it's hard for bender not to want to figure out if she knows what she's signing up for. he leans back now, dragging a half-cut gloved hand over his mouth as he plays off thinking this through. "promise? no." as in, let's get that fantasy out of the way. "if you're worried i'm stupid, then unclench a little. have a little faith. i know how to not get caught." the same hand waves the possibility off. there's about however many square feet of this shitty school, one supervisor, and two of them. this is serious business they're talking about. bender is about twenty years deep in owed saturdays, but it's about a man's pride. and maybe it's a little bit about not actually getting chrissy in more trouble with her dear ol' folks. and people call bender a douchebag! "so, whaddaya think?"
there's a moment of tension. of realizing that yes, chrissy cunningham is in real trouble. detention on a saturday. it's real then, but his grin makes it not feel too heavy on her shoulders, he's pressing down on something...he might think it's a bruise, but it's not that. feels like they are sharing something, despite their differences. despite them not being anything alike. (and isn't that the kicker? that they might have more in common than anyone else could even imagine.) she looks away and down, shy. but it's framed with a smile. maybe a couple of non official getting togethers, a couple of saturdays ago she might have been offended. and she kind of wishes she could be. instead of this.
have a little faith, he says. and this doesn't feel like sunday school. it feels quite far from it. for once she feels in control, like it's legitimately her decision whether to do this and not. consequences she can deal at a later time. and her eyes cannot look away from the shape of bender, gloved hand. "you are not stupid, bender." she makes an interjection. truth in between glossed lips. she rubs her hands. and it isn't fear but rather excitement. it's hitting her then, she gets to be a little stupid teenager.
she looks around before she meets bender's eyes once more. here she is, all trusting. her life and her future freedome being placed on leathered palms. she blinks, and she nods. pressing her lips together. "i think." bites her bottom lip. her heart is beating fast, and she doesn't know where this is going. where it's landing. she slowly stands up, straigthens her skirt. closing her notebook, finger playing on the cover. running a manicured nail over it. "i think you should lead the way, john." lashes fanning. her nerves are killing her. butterflies and the whole damn zoo.
can i use that? (its her scrunchie)
“my scrunchie?” the question comes naturally, bright eyes shifting from eddie’s dark ones to her wrist. it’s that thing she always carries, a style choice, earth green. she owns all sorts of scrunchies, all sorts of colors. keeps one at her wrist almost always… blinks and suddenly curious.
with a small smirk, her fingers delicately unlink it from her wrist. her hand finds his and it is not lost on her how big his hand is compared to hers. chrissy likes the cool metal sensation that comes from his rings.
she looks a little sweet when she sets the scrunchie on his palm, peeking up at him. “here.” with eddie it’s always like the first time even with the mundane things such as holding hands, only now chrissy is filled with a confidence that wasn’t there before. she feels a little warm, waiting on whatever he plans to do with the scrunchie.

chrissy had been idling away time. not even books could keep her entertained when she was this starved for entertainment, it would be another three weeks before mother and father returned. she's toying with a thread in her dress, what would she give to have someone to talk to, someone to play even if mother said she is growing too old for games.
then. a noise. she's near the window, and out in the garden she swears she can see something move the bushes and hedges. in her ever growing imagination she pictures an animal, wounded maybe. and her mother would never allow it but she is certain she could heal a cat back to health or any similar animal for that matter. so she does the usual and sneaks out of the manor.
she has become an expert in the matter avoiding anyone left in charge of her with some ease, everyone is busy with their chores, excellent timing from whatever higher power seems to overlooking her at the moment. the humid air hits first when she sets a leg over the first floor window. as the sun sets it is a beautiful image, one chrissy wishes she could see from any other part in the world. she's careful then as she approaches the greenery. slowly, as to not scare whatever is hidding away.
chrissy stands. holding her own hands as she looks for something anything that could give away what is hiding. head tilting down, golden hair down to a side. "hello? it's alright. don't be scared, i am trying to help. are you hurt?" she keeps her tone light. not worried about whatever might be lurking waiting for her. what ever it is she is ready.

Billy emerges from the gym victorious. A couple fancy tricks on the court, a few distracting taunts (and a shove for good measure), and he brings the win to his team. The high of the adrenaline still courses through his veins, but there's something fucking sour about it. He won the game and made everyone look at him. Except for Harrington. It feels like a loss. The replay goes over and over in his mind, and his stomach twists thinking about how desperate he was to turn the handle of the shower just to get the guy to look at him.
Why the hell did it matter? Because he has to get everyone looking at him. And if he's being honest, every other hick from Bumfuck, Indiana is easily starry-eyed by a California transplant. It's not that hard to get them to play this game. And yet it is. What's more-- Billy isn't impressed with Indiana or California, and now that the latter washes up to the shores of his mind, he winces. Agitation crawls across his skin, making his body brace for a blow that does not come. Suddenly, he wants a cigarette. Something to calm him down.
Billy wants a lot of things, but like that itch for a cigarette, he swallows it.
Time for another distraction!
He makes his way down the hall, complete disinterest plastered on his face as he feels the eyes of every classmate on him. Billy is looking for someone. He doesn't know who, exactly. Until he sees her. Chrissy.
Billy ambles up to her, boots heavy on the floor, then leans his shoulder against the lockers. Nonchalant. Smooth. Well-practiced. Like he has this down to a science, all while suffocating under the weight that constricts his lungs because it's getting closer to the end of the school day. Which means he has to get Max and go back home. They can't be fucking late again. "Hey," he says low and sweet, a smile playing at his lips. Disingenuous at heart, but convincing and charming enough. "Chrissy, right?" It's an old trick. Play a little dumb and a little bit interested all at once. Billy knows this is Chrissy. He's seen her around enough. He knows she's Hawkins' Queen and walks with the same crowd that calls him Keg King now. What a fucking joke! Except he carries that title like it's some kind of badge of honor. It's better than the other things he carries. And, like a cherry on top, it pissed Harrington off. A win, win situation. That fires him up. Billy's running on all cylinders now, his voice practically purring as he says: "Hawkins' very own angel with pom poms instead of wings."
Billy's looking at her, and his head tilts, waiting for something. A reaction. He goes quiet for a moment, but in words only. Nothing about Billy is quiet at all. Everything's so goddamn loud all the time. He wishes (sometimes) he could dial it back. But if he does, he'll start thinking again. And he can't do that. So he shifts into gear. Keeps it up.
"You got a game comin' up?"
school is like everything else that plagues chrissy cunningham. it's that thing, where she feels on the spot. somewhere half way she felt the decisions slowly run away from her, and then there weren't any decisions to take anymore. from the people around her to the things she gets to do or she doesn't. it's all a little too suffocating. and it's unbearable, doing it over and over again expecting for something to give or to change. she's running on autopilot. and she's staring. and she didn't notice she was staring.
bright eyes look up at the new guy. everyone is talking about him, so much chrissy's ears could fall off. it makes her nervous. not in an excited i get to talk to a boy nervous like all the stories she reads. there's always this uncertainty with real strangers, do they see what chrissy is trying to be? is she transparent? it's a little difficult to let herself get too into her own thoughts. the guy is...pretty. big lashes, he smells like cigarettes. dangerous in a way that's interesting. like you can't look away. unlike anyone else in this town
then...something. it's like she can almost put her finger on it not being everything there is about him. chrissy isn't outwardly a people's person. but she is naturally curious. sticks her nose sometimes where it shouldn't go. she's keeping it in mind as she holds the books closer to her chest. it's like needing to focus her eyes to see the image clear up. blinks them back into focus.
"hey." soft, he seems charming. sweet in another life. she gets a little shy, persona breaking just a bit. not scary. rarely scary. "-now who said that? unless. you thought about that one yourself...then that's really sweet. thank you." it's a little sick. an angel alright. "soon, we have to pracitce anyways. are you...are you making team? it's like everything everyone cares about. basketball season is pretty huge." and she's giving him an in...she can't deny it he's intriguing, she has to admit there's something about the new guy. "and i'm sorry i didn't get your name." gossip sometimes does a half bad job in this high school, specially when chrissy avoids it. she doesn't want to mess up this early. she leans back, any other girl would have been flirting, she can't find it in herself.

“ if you die on me i’ll bring you back to life and kill you myself. ”
she's seeing spots, eyes blinking, in and out of consciousness. it's fine, she can usually take it, and they usually don't go this hard on her. but something went wrong. somewhere there was a misstep. and here she is, in trinity's arms. maybe a place chrissy never thought would be a place for her, something or someone else meant for them.
chrissy smiles, mouth bloody. half the mask off. "you wouldn't." her head rolls to a side, it's pounding. lashes fluttering and it would be pretty, it would be cute under any other circumstances. "-you like me too much."
"the room's spinning, trinity." and chrissy feels a little sick, a little boneless. they didn't hold back their punches. and she managed to crawl her way out. crawl her way back into her appartment. the copper taste in her mouth a little foul. that's the thing here, she doesn't want to die. not really. she still goes the distance.
“ you have to sleep eventually. ” /+from jonathan
chrissy finds herself wandering aimless through the world. being dead does a lot to a person, and chrissy was never fully dead, chrissy never died in the permanent way. but home feels like a prison now more than ever, suffocating when she starts to put everything together. how much of that place isn't her. how little by little the pieces of herself that she took blew away in the wind. along with the happiness that could be found in this house.
hey eyes are starting to turn a little red. the nightmares are all too real, the tears running down her cheeks are long dried. they're staring at the tv in her room, the one her mom got to appease her new found tendencies of staying in. they're watching some old cartoon, and it's all melting into one thing. jonathan on the side of her. and it's nice having someone who gets it.
she hums in agreement. half wishing that things were as easy as on the stupid silly cartoons, she's hugging herself, leaning into her knees. resting her cheek on them. before she unfolds. "i can't." her voice is quiet. manicured hands fumble with the blankets. "-everytime i close my eyes. i see. i see him. and i can't do it." the words pour out, a familiarity that seems strange and put off. but it's there, because jon knows what it's like. "how did you ever fall asleep? after everything..." it's different yes, but a torment still. jon looks like a heavy sleeper. and all chrissy is doing is asking for help.
bender's mouth pulls to the side when he realizes chrissy doesn't take his bait. though, was it really bait to begin with, or deflection? projection, even. something quieter settles in behind his teeth as she talks about the right girl, about it not feeling like effort; like it's simple. like it's something people actually do without screwing it up or turning it into a joke. yeah fucking right. bender couldn't name one happy couple in all of hawkins that wasn't gushing bullshit. bender's gaze drifts off her for a second, landing somewhere useless. bookshelves. the window. dust in the light. anywhere but her pretty face while she's saying things like that. what she says, what chrissy wants? that part's not built for him.
"yup," he mutters under his breath, agreeing with something he doesn't fully buy into. "guess that's the trick." his jaw shifts. there's a flicker of something there. quick, gone just as fast. the kind of thought he doesn't let sit long enough to take shape. something along the lines of yeah, and guys like me don't exactly get picked for that part. bender sits in his pity party, doing what he always does: lets it slide, files it off. because guys like him don't do that. don't pack picnics. don't sit around watching the sunrise like they've got nowhere better to be. guys like him are the fifteen minutes behind the bleachers, the part of the night people don't talk about after.
by the time she nudges the notebook toward him, he's already halfway back behind the smirk. "once," he says, glancing down at the page. "teacher called it vandalism." it lands easier. familiar ground. he leans forward anyway, slower this time, elbow brushing hers when he reaches for the pen right out of her hand. his eyes skim over the page: her name, over and over, all neat and careful. hearts. stars. bender snorts quietly. "what, you want my autograph next?" there's no bite. there also isn't any pen markings. bender idles with the pen until he spins it away up the table. something else possesses his mind and he doesn't think to give it any oxygen, can't afford to, but it's there. it's fucking there. "tell ya what, you wanna know fun? real fun? ever snuck outta here before? it's real simple. baby stuff.."
chrissy kicks her feet. wonders what bender could have possibly drawn for something to be called vandalism. her eyes soft at the edge of the page holding back a smile, chrissy wouldn't approve of it. she feels his touch and something alights, she doesn't even think about it she just feels it. and her face is warm. it's a gentle thing elbow to elbow, through her light jacket.
"so what if i do want your autograph?" chrissy turns to look at him, and suddenly she's flustered. closer than before, she looks away then. "-i like looking at people's handwriting." then a little nervous, fingers curl into her palm. her eyebrow raises at him. "baby stuff?" shes surprised at first...then there's this feeling deep in her gut, it bypasses everything in her brain blaring alarms high and bright that this is a terrible idea. she's biting her lips, and there it is again the warmth blossoming from her stomach, all the way to her chest. it's his fault. "you're going to get me in trouble, john bender." her hand taps on his arm, like they're friends and this is playful. then she's thinking about it, mulling it over. letting it sit or pretending to. she doesn't want to be a bummer, and she doesn't know why she feels like she wants to impress him. confirm the fact that there is more to chrissy than what people might think.
"-i'll only go if you can promise we won't get caught. my parents are already mad at me for making them drive here on a saturday. can't risk anything worse than that." half a lie, as in chrissy's parents are too busy drowning in misery to really care. they don't have to know she has detention, or has been having detention some days and that scrapbooking or the yearbook club does not meet up on saturdays ever. "i mean it." then, just a tiny bit serious. but it's not a no.
bender expects the reaction. the blush, the fluster. it's what he was fishing for, admittedly, and it's almost predictable at this point. almost. what he doesn't expect is what comes out of her mouth next. all girls want are things he doesn't have. money to spend. a car to screw around in. a happy little home to meet the even happier parents. and even if they do, somehow, magically: it's a weekend of normalcy before monday. suddenly strangers. not so suddenly back to their own circles, never to mix again. or, on the other hand: bender expects a slap in the face or a shove in the shoulder. vulgarity reaching a little too deep in the ears. he's already leaning back again with his chair tipped just enough to be annoying about it while she gathers herself. chrissy clocks that his idea of a date is lacking a little. "yeah, well," he mutters, barely looking up, "good thing i wasn't asking you, queenie." it's automatic. reflex. deflection.
he lets his mind slip elsewhere for a bit, guided by chrissy's own perception of a date. he's positive she's ripping it from memory, something her and her choir boy honey have gotten around to doing already. but bender knows all guys are the same too. that boyfriend of hers is only putting more chips in the bowl, then things can get handsy without a hitch. the thought settles uncomfortably on him. nothing that obvious, but his balance shifts forward. something's pulling his attention whether he likes it or not. a breath saves him, and bender scoffs to reset his attention. watch the stars. watch the sunrise. his mouth almost twitches at that. real rebellious, cunningham, but it doesn't quite make it out. there's something about the way she says it. not trying to impress him. not fishing for anything. just.. saying it like it's simple. like it's allowed to be simple.
bender's jaw shifts, tongue pressing briefly against the inside of his cheek. his eyes flick up to her, then away again just as fast. "jesus," he mutters under his breath, but there's no real bite to it. she just.. keeps going. thinking about someone when they're not there, about wanting to do something about it: and that's the part that lands wrong. or right. something in between that makes john's shoulders tighten just a fraction. he exhales through his nose, dragging a hand over his mouth like he's wiping the whole thing away. "sunrises. that's a long time to have to stick around." bender says after a second, his voice trying to sand back down into something familiar. tries to make it sound like a complaint but it only ends up sounding curious. "guy'd have to really like her," his fingers pick the pen back up, but he doesn't spin it this time, just rolls it between his hands, eyes drifting back to her notebook. to the hearts and stars she'd been drawing earlier. "sounds like a lotta effort." sounds like a lot of things bender doesn't have or can be.
i wasn't asking you. and chrissy isn't stupid. unlike what most people believe, she's smart. she knows she's probably nothing what bender is looking for in a girl. and that is fine. because she's got a boyfriend and bender has well, chrissy doesn't know. and her stomach feels funny if she thinks about it too much. she doesn't dweel on it too much. let's it slide, because this thing isn't that. and it's not leading anywhere close.
"yeah. he would have to." big eyes stare at bender, his reaction, she feels vulnerable. pouring this side of her that no one really gets to see. but he doesn't make fun of her which is the usual reaction when it appears that people don't get it, when people don't get her. "that's the thing. like, i think it wouldn't feel like effort. if it's for the right girl. so it's about that more than. anything really."
it's that i wish someone would do that for me. that someone would care like that that chrissy cunningham leaves unsaid. she picks up the pen again. scribbles again, as they fall into that familiar silence, the types of conversations that only exist in this inbetween space. she moves the notebook so it's more in the middle of the two. "-ever scribbled in a notebook john? it's real fun." and she resumes her work, it's about giving him a safety out. it's about feeling a little too exposed, imagining things. like bender sounding a little curious at the prospect. "you should try it." her eyes dance, between the page and between him. half biting her lip. thinking considering maybe that she's thinking things that she shouldn't.

what? i wear eyeliner sometimes. i do.
chrissy finds herself in eddie munson's room. which happens to be in steve's harrington's house. he's going back out there, the band is playing or more accurately a band is playing. and chrissy said yes to going out. big eyes get distracted, stare up at eddie as she's laying upside down. she's nervous. even though chrissy cunningham can barely contain the feelings on the matter in her body. a type of freedom, a type of rebellion that might seem just so incredibly childish. but to her it's everything.
"no it's not a complaint." she rolls over sits up, hair going with her. volume curls sitting neatly on her shoulders. "-i just didn't think your eyes could get any bigger." she smiles, sweet. slowly after the days fom hell and months in a hospital bed eddie munson has been on the never ending mission to unravel chrissy cunningham, find what lies there. at the core. "they look pretty." and then a beat. "you look pretty." and what has that unraveling led to? well. simple. chrissy is brave. "come here."
she sits on the bed, on her knees. arms holding out for eddie to find his way to her. and slender fingers settle on his shoulder. presses a kiss to his nose. "sorry, i don't know if you were going for badass or something. and to clarify you still look a little badass." she bites her lips. moments of hesitation, of not saying what she's thinking are few and far in between.
i’m sorry i didn’t go to your party. /+ lisa
there's this sort of feeling, that lurks within chrissy whenever lisa swallows is concerned. despite the tall tales and the endless circle of gossip chrissy finds herself wrapped up in she knows in her heart that something about lisa is okay.
maybe it is because despite appearances not everything about chrissy is quite it seems. not even in a way that is meant to be mysterious, or even alluring. just as a matter of fact or evidence. deep down, hidden, one left turn and the freak that makes up chrissy cunningham emerges.
she smiles kinda soft, tucking her hair over her ear. "no that's okay, lisa." and it's fine and she doesn't care. in the sense that appearances don't matter to her like they matter to others. not when it comes to friends. "-i mean, like, i did miss you being there. but there will be other parties. i'll always invite you."
"why couldn't you go? i mean you didn't miss much." parties tend to be a little boring when you find yourself with a guy who seemingly isn't all that great when surrounded with other people. and that's sometimes jason.
