My first book of 2019 - aptly timed for the start of an exciting year ahead.

Some of my key take-aways :

The philosophy of the 12 Week Year is to drive focus and as a result greater execution by planning in 12 wk blocks vs 52.

“Execution is the single greatest market differentiator. Great companies and successful individuals execute better than their competition. The barrier standing between you and the life you are capable of living is a lack of consistent execution. Effective execution will set you free. It is the path to accomplish the things you desire.”

Execution starts with a compelling long-term vision and daily / weekly actions to accomplish it.

“Vision is the starting point of all high performance. You create things twice; first mentally, then physically.”

Lead & Lag and Measurement is key to keep on-track. Weekly scorecard each week vs tactics for that week.

Be intentional with your actions. Hold your accountable. Accountability = ownership.

Review action plan daily, weekly, monthly. + long-term vision to keep that central.

Protect your time. Plan your perfect week. Block out performance time : strategic blocks, buffer blocks, and breakout blocks.

Keystone Actions - identify the core actions that directly produce results. Repeat.

Act on commitments you make. To yourself or other relying on you.

Be present, in the moment, to be most effective. Schedule focus periods to help minimise distraction.

Fascinating article from Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz on the future of computing; including some great visionary Jobs esq quotes :

“If you spend enough hours in a Magic Leap system, it’s almost impossible to go back to your phone or computer or television. You realize that they’re very thin slices. Magic Leap gives you a giant volume of computing. When you actually get to play with it, spatial computing means you work within a volume, not just a slice. That’s the mental shift.”

Spent the last few days speaking with Australia / APAC’s thought-leaders and innovators at the ADAPT Digital Edge event on the Gold Coast.

The focus of the event is on digital transformation at-scale - great discussions and presentations on centralisation of platforms and services, harmonising the org around unified working models and processes - not easy, but delivers huge business benefits if done right.

Positive also to see AR / AI technologies being spoken about in a digital transformation context - I’m a firm believer in getting the foundations right, whilst also looking forwards at new solutions to leapfrog competitors.

From shared ledgers enabling cross-platform transit : “The blockchain world proposes something different. Imagine some group like Protocol Labs decides there’s a case to be made for adding another “basic layer” to the stack. Just as GPS gave us a way of discovering and sharing our location, this new protocol would define a simple request: I am here and would like to go there. A distributed ledger might record all its users’ past trips, credit cards, favorite locations”

To, blockchain based identity platforms : “Someone creates a new protocol to define your social network via Ethereum. It might be as simple as a list of other Ethereum addresses; in other words, Here are the public addresses of people I like and trust. That way of defining your social network might well take off and ultimately supplant the closed systems that define your network on Facebook. Perhaps someday, every single person on the planet might use that standard to map their social connections, just as every single person on the internet uses TCP/IP to share data... An open identity standard would give ordinary people the opportunity to sell their attention to the highest bidder, or choose to keep it out of the marketplace altogether.”
