Each morning, Ababalwe prays with his classmates at this Orphan's Promise sponsored daycare center. He thanks God for friends. Just a few months ago, he didn't really have any friends.
"Every day when he saw the other children go to daycare he would ask, 'Mommy, why can't I go?' It broke my heart to tell him I didn't have enough money for it," his mother told us. "He was so lonely."
While his sister went to school and his mom, Sinki, looked for work, he occupied his time playing in the narrow walkways near his home.
"Many times I would come home to find him playing in the dirty water by a drain," his mother remembered. "He started getting rashes on his arms from that."
Ababalwe's father abandoned him and his mother when he was just six months old. When his mother couldn't find work, she begged the neighbors for some porridge.
"I felt embarrassed," she told us. "I knew they didn't even have enough food for themselves. They gave me what they could, because they knew my baby was hungry. At times like that, I felt like God didn't exist."
Then, a local church found out about the family's situation and invited Ababalwe to join their daycare center. He gets two meals a day and a good education in a safe environment. Today, Ababalwe and 23 other kids are sponsored by CBN's Orphan's Promise to come this center for free.
"I can see that Ababalwe has changed," his mother told us. "He tells me stories from the Bible and talks about the 10 Commandments."
Since she had more time to look for work, Sinki found a new job and now has a steady income. These days, people come to her and ask for food, and she always gives it to them.
"Now I know God exists," said Sinki. "Everything has changed because of you. Thank you CBN!"
