FOLLOWER REVIEW: AAWKS’ Little EP Is Big on Fuzz
One of the great things about being a small reviewer is that it’s actually possible for me to check out all the bands that follow me on Instagram. Today I’m paying back the love by reviewing one of those followers.
This month’s pick is the stoner doom band AAWKS from Barrie, Ontario. Join me as I light up a fat birthday J, and drop into the thick fog of AAWKS’ debut offering, EP.1.
AAWKS’ Facebook page describes their sound as “fuzzy rock n’roll music your stoner Stepdad probably likes.” That description proves accurate on their first track. All is Fine is replete with psychedelic fuzz and heady Cream vibes. The tempo shifts repeatedly, keeping the listener off balance like a trip through a carnival funhouse. Things get slow and sludgy toward the end of the track, closing on a wave of reverb.
The second (and final) track on this bite-sized EP is Summer Haze. It’s the sonic equivalent to being high at summer camp. The track has a hypnotic melody and an irresistible hook ready to lull you into sun dappled oblivion. A wailing guitar solo keeps the 70’s revival going. The abrupt end left me wanting more.
AAWKS has a new album in the works for 2022, with the first single dropping Friday. Keep an eye on their Bandcamp page for more info. I know I’ll be listening.
