What Does Lolita Mean to You?
«────── « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ──────»
Hello everyone! I'll keep the question short, but does wearing Lolita have a deeper meaning for anyone else? I've had a deep love for the fashion for many years, but can't seem to put what it means to me into words. I'd like to see other people's takes on the question!
Hai Hai! For me, Lolita fashion is an expression of rebellion, and a love letter to one’s self. TLDR: Lolita talks about the taboo of femininity and cuteness in the west due to patriarchy and the hyper fixation of the male gaze. As well as praises the community for their bravery.
In the UK, ‘cuteness’ is rare and looked down upon. There are a lot of reasons for this, with most being misinformation and the public being convinced that cuteness and anything from Japan is a form of fetish content and for perverts. Most of the general public’s clothing is dark or low in saturation, with more colourful pieces being saved for the older generation(50+). While there has been some progress recently, with a couple of Miniso’s and a ‘CUTE’ exhibition, most kawaii items have been watered down greatly. For example, the ‘21 forever’ collab with hello kitty-
- or entirely misconstrued due to being under researched, such as the ‘CUTE’ exhibition in London. While this seems like I am nit picking, I cannot emphasise enough how taboo cuteness is in the UK, even for children. When the British public doesn’t understand something, they immediately believe it is immoral and sexual because our society is so focused upon the men and the importance of masculinity. Anything feminine is considered weak and weird, often only seen in p@rn. Even emojis can be considered too ‘feminine’ for British men to use. And with the name ‘Lolita’ being associated with the book from the view of a ped@, you can imagine the amount of hands grabbing pearls when the name is brought up.
This is extremely frustrating as Lolita fashion is a feminist act against hyper sexualisation within society. A clothing style that is purely catered for women and those who see feminine traits in as high regard as masculine ones- yet is immediately considered perverted because others cannot fathom any clothing that is not catered to appeal to men. And not explaining such details in shows like ‘CUTE’ London, really shows how little care the west has for cuteness and how they will ignore the very real social influences that fuel aspects of it.
Due to growing up with this stigma, I had always assumed I would ‘grow out’ of liking cute things, such as my interest with Lolita fashion. The idea of throwing others opinions of you- knowing they would be entirely negative - is a very hard thing to do for anyone, and I had been reluctant at first to embrace this side of me because I was so scared to be disliked. However now that I’ve officially ‘grown up’, I’ve come to realise that it was never a phase and that I had been shaming myself because my interests were not socially conviential. And I am now so much happier embracing cuteness and Lolita clothing! Accepting yourself is extremely hard to do, which is why I adore every Lolita as wearing that petticoat and headdress is a massive step that cannot be ignored.
Aaaa I love this!!! Thank you so much for sharing a bit about the UK. I don't live there and had no idea it was like that. It's so interesting to me. I had the same thought that I'd grow out of Lolita in the past, but I still love it as much as I did years ago ᰔ

I wear egl because It’s what I like to wear. My two styles I prefer to wear are deathrock and old school gothic so I oftentimes mix the two a lot in terms of diy and what brands I’m buying from. I have my fav Japanese brands (Moitie, Marble and AtePie) along with certain Chinese indie brands and obscure western indie brands as long as they give off that old school gothic vibe. I started getting into egl of may of last year because I love Japan and how unique and creative the fashion styles they come up with are and I wish more ppl especially goths would appreciate that because I’ve noticed and unusual amount anti Asian racism in online goth scenes especially towards egl to the point they sound like normies talking about goth.
I adore old school as well! I also totally agree with the last part. It definitely should be more appreciated.
