Weekend Wildtime
Natasha & Paige Roadtrip
Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney
A few weeks ago, a man emailed me to “congratulate” me for “overcoming my gender” and voting for Bernie Sanders. After reading a short blog post I wrote here, he incorrectly assumed that I was one of the many youngish women voting for Sanders. It was an odd turn of phrase, one that simultaneously implied that gender is something that can be rendered politically irrelevant by a single vote while also suggesting that being a woman was something that can and should be mastered. By this line of thinking, I suppose I was owed a congratulatory note.

If only....
So, the world is pretty fucked-up. What burns me is how much money is wasted in better known organizations; it is estimated only 10% of your donations get the the actual people who need it. $1 can actually go a long way, so I spent a shit ton of time looking into where to donate and how the money is then used. Some organizations need more reliable donations while others can use funds when there’s a pivotal crisis. Still others put money in the hands of the actual people that need it and others provide meaningful, long-term training. The important thing is that the money actually go where you intend it to.
Give Directly – Actually gives real people the money you donate, they can do whatever they want with it, but they are well vetted by the organization. $10 a month is a great starting point, as it gives continuous aid.
Marine Mammal Center – Sea creatures have had a particularly terrible time the last few years. Many babies have washed up without way to survive, many adults get handicapped by fishing nets and the like. I love giant, blubbery mammals and this place does them loads of good.
Animal Rescue Societies – These are often low-kill shelters, sometimes no-kill and tons of rescues pull from them. $10 a month makes a big difference here as well.
Fix Our Ferals – Finding an abandoned litter of kittens is heart-breaking. FOF cuts down the amount of feral cats spawning along with providing them reliable sources of clean food and water.
Southern Poverty Law Center – The work of Mr. Dees is second to none. Not sure if he is doing much in New Orleans, but he’s had incredible impact over decades.
Creative Growth – I love this place. It has an incredible roster of world famous artists with developmental, physical and mental disabilities. The work endlessly inspiring, unique, unassuming and idiosyncratic.
Sama Source – A non-profit that teaches people computer skills so they can develop life long skills and always be able to find work. Having seen this organization working first hand, it gives people a way to fundamentally change their lives.
Kiva – This is a great holiday gift. They give are a micro finance company, providing loans to people all over the world to begin or develop their businesses.
Food Banks – This is another great $10 monthly donation. Helping people with those most basic necessities.
Heifer – Another holiday gift. They provide renewable resources like goats, chickens, ducks, bees and more to people.
Give Well – While malaria inoculations may not sound impressive, this site vets the best places to give based on actual impact. While I don’t agree with everything on their list, it’s a great place to explore.
I am unclear what grunge art is, but whatever Laura Zombie is doing, it works. I love the playfulness of her themes and colors. Super hip while still super cool.
I've been reading a lot about child soldiers lately. There's this book and that one, which give an idea, but it's Richard Mosse's series shot on infrared film that really blows my mind. Infrared film, when used with the correct filter, turns greens to pink, creating the most arresting, unexpected colors. To do this in Africa, in a war torn region, infusing these kids with bright pink, was innovative and striking,
It's not nearly impossible to find, except for here, but if you can get some, it is really incredible.
What I like aboutLiz Von Hone's work is the deliberateness of each of her frames; while they are sultry and vivacious, there is never a hair out of place nor a change in color that is unintended.

Why the Fuck Not: Caucasian Ovcharka Dog
The Dogs of my Motherland, Caucasian Shepherd Dogs, are amazing. Not colossus but Molossus. Gigantic, downy teddys that can also battle bears. This somehow lead me to Russian models posing with bears, нет дерьмо!
I was stumbling around the internet the other day and found Ji Woon Pak's drawings. The eyes, as well as the shifts in color, make these paintings for me. While her work is much exploration of similar themes, it beautiful and slightly off-kilter.
Some pictures from Ohio over Christmas, December 21-29, 2015.

An Evening with Lady Snowblood-
I hadn't heard of this Lady Snowblood (1973) when it popped up on Hulu, but poster image was the heroine covered in blood with a fearless expression. So I watched it.
A woman possessed by a demonic spirit hell bend on vengeance, geysers of blood flowing from any available artery, beautiful lighting and a sword hidden in a parasol; this movie rules. I adore Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, but this movie takes the cake. The way Ms. Kaji ends the film is devastatingly moving.
Late Night Inspiration: Vanessa Foley
I first saw Vanessa's work at my favorite stores in Oakland, Esqueleto. The internet doesn't do her work justice; all you see are hand-drawn lines. No computer work, no bulk shading, just unending tiny graphite lines. And her work is hella affordable, like $100 affordable.

My Girls - Kaja Nelson
I love shooting with Kaja, not only does she have a beautifully unique face with a fabulous figure, but her attitude is impeccable. She is down with whatever, whenever and never does she complain.
